So my Pops told me that they have some awesome trails for wheelers at the sand dunes near Alimosa now. I haven't been there in years is this true? I will be coming through CO to visit parents, vacation etc... and would like to do some good ole CO wheeling. Will prolly do up above Westcliffe too, I had a great time up there back in the days.

When will you be coming.... bcause that will determine what trails are open. We've been pounded bu snow recently so a lot of stuff is un-runnable till the snow melts... (read probably May)

Won't be coming till June when the kids out of school, so most of the snow should be gone by then I would think. Still will be some way up.

It's been a couple years since I've been down there, but if I remember correctly, there's a main trail that circles around "behind" the dunes (some sand driving), and then it heads up into the hills. I don't recall how many options, or how technical the trails were though, but I do remember they were fairly crowded. May and early June is very popular down there because the water levels are up, but it's not too hot on the sand to burn a hole in your feet.

I think that's the Medano Pass trail Jacket is referring to... if Will (Tat2dguy) would ever show up, he could tell ya exactly...

That would be Medano Pass. Fun trail but you can't drive on the dunes. There is a section of trail that runs near the dunes that is all sand. Quite a few people get stuck in big SUV's with full street pressure in their tires but with some common sense, it's an easy drive.

Speaking of common sense, I almost got bogged down heading up that hill westward because some Jeep asshole got stuck in the middle of the trail 'cause he didn't air down. Sand can be tough, but heading down that hill is like a sand slalom..awesome!

I've pulled Ford Explorers from the river crossing and through the sand because Tex decided to drive through the water too quick and flood his Ford. Then he was stuck right in the middle of the trail. Hooked a tow strap up and got him out of the way.

We usually go over Memorial weekend. Medano Pass is an absolute zoo at that time. It's kinda fun watching all the people get stuck and driving right around them in a 22 year old truck :)
