Hey guys
I recently sold my taco and now I'm thinking about getting a FZJ80. Ive done a little bit of rsearch and reading on them but I wanted to get you guys opinions.
Are there problems with higher miles on the 93-97 models? What life can be expected from that engine? Any thing else I should know or look for?

I'd head right over to www.ih8mud.com which is considered to be the best site for 80 series information on the web. There is an extensive FAQ about all years of the 80 series.
Christo and his boys do a good job of giving you some primo information to get you started.
Personally, I like the reliability of the earlier 3FE powered 80 series trucks, but they were a dog and the engine just wasn't enough for a 3 ton vehicle.
The 1FZFE powerplant is adequate for the rig, but many do not feel as though it is as reliable (a so-called "head gasket" issue...I don't buy that BS).
Good luck. It's a great rig and if you can score one with lockers, all the better.
If you care about mileage, I get a solid 16 mpg. Totally stock 1997 FZJ80. I typically travel 65 to 70 mph on the freeway. 60% Freeway/40% City driving.
The AWD auto tranny eats gas.
Life expectancy is rumored to be 3 rebuilds at 300k so your only gonna get about a million miles out of one of the good ones. I got 210k on mine and its going strong. Factory lockers available from 93 to 97, definately something to look for. Ih8mud and slee's newbie sites are your best bet as mentioned above. introduce yourself when you pick one up.
With the newer 4.7L motor that is in the 100 series, the timing belt has to be changed every 90k miles.
With the FZJ80 4.5L motor, it has a timing chain, I think I read it should be changed every 300,000 miles. I'm at about 90k miles on my 10 year old LC.
