I tried to go scout some trails for a Wyoming run over the weekend. Most of the good ones are snowed in.. However I did have the opportunity to humiliate a Dodge 1 ton driver.

I pull up and he has been there for about an hour.. NO shovel, NO Rope, No Chains. No Gloves.. all this adds up to NO CLUE

Of course I ask if there is anything I can do to help..
His reply
"That little Truck of yours isn't going to help pull this beast out"

I said.. well it is 2 hours back to town, A hour at least to get someone to come help.. So your looking at 5 hours. Lets just try and dig out your front end and then I can pull you straight back. It is worth a try.
OK he says with a more than a little contempt.

Hey where is the front wheel?

Taco to the Rescue

I pulled him to the side a little so I coould get his body straightwith his wheels. Then I unhooked and pulled straight back. He popped out on the first try.

Out in 2 pulls and 30 minutes of shoveling. After that he was very interested in the Taco and making excuses for not being prepared.

A Happy Taco is a Dirty Taco

In the end he tried to give me a $20 and I declined. I gave him a short list of necessities he should alwas have with him and then parted company. I wanted to tell him.. For $20.00 you should go buy a damn shovel!

He runs into a snowbank in the middle of nowhere and doesn't have a damn thing to help get his 7500lb beast out? I bet he was all kinds of manly with his "this beast can't get stuck" attitude and then he buries it and gets pulled out by a truck half his size. Well done chap, well done.

The Dodge Ram emblem looks like ovaries, fallopian tubes and a vagina. This is really not intended to be a sexist statement as I know there are several women involved with wheeling so... Flame me if you want.

Don't pull people out in reverse. You will do damage to your R&P. If possible, always pull in the forward direction. Your pinion is riding the on the stronger side of the ring gear going forward (in the rear axle :D )

Volcom,

Thanks for the advice.

I gave him a little nudge in reverse just to straighten his body with the front wheels, then pulled him out from the rear. There was so much snow packed in between the front wheels and the engine I couldn't get a shovel in there. After I got his body and wheels straight then I repositioned and pulled him straight back with the rope hooked to the rear of my truck.

I can't wait for my front bumper!

Actually in both axles on a Tacoma - they have a reverse cut, high pinion front so both axles are stronger in forward than reverse.

In the older trucks like mine, they use standard cut gears in the front, so the front is actually stronger in reverse. Since it is the weaker diff (by far), I'm kinda torn whether I should be going in reverse or not.

IMHO, it's not that big a deal. If they're really stuck, it's probably a slick surface and you won't be able to generate enough traction for the torque load to get that high...

Meh - no offense taken. I used to have a set of truck nutz that where sneaked onto my truck. Hmmm looks like those woulda looked good on that Dodge! Nice recovery BTW. Always great to hear about club members willing to help someone out, even if their ego is int he way.

Hmmm.... us women with internal dodge plumbing emblems don't seem to have that ego problem too often...

*flame on* LOL
