Hey, this is my first thread i have started but i need some help. I am going to be lifting my tacoma this summer. I was planning on doing a 3" body lift on it. I was going to run it on 33x12.50x15 bfg at. My truck has a 2.7L 4 cyl engine in it (auto trans), and i was wondering if anyone knew if i need to change the gearing. If i do need to change it, what should I be looking for and a ball-park price range to change it. Also I am going to be doing the lift myself and was wondering if anyone had any tips on any tricky parts to make eveything go just a little bit smoother. thanks a lot guys.

Ok, lets start with the lift. 3" BL isn't gonna clear those 33's without rubbing. You should consider combining your BL with a suspension lift for an ideal 5" of lift to properly clear those tires. Anything less will rub.

Next, you do want to regear, especially with that big of a tire change. Sure your auto tranny can cope with not regearing, but your tranny will work harder, so will your engine, your gas mileage will go down, etc. For those tires, consider going to 4.56 gears to get back to stock and 4.88 if you do more rockcrawling and the like. As for the gears, stick with Precision brand gears and do not buy them from Randy's Ring and Pinion. Installed cost for the gears will average about $500-600 per axle.

I can't give any tips on the BL since I've never installed one myself. Good luck

you will definitely need to regear so be prepared for sticker shock...it ain't cheap.

parts (gears and master install kits) will run between $600-700 depending on what prices are running now. TRD gears are slightly cheaper so under $600 is possible.

labor will varry with your location/labor rates and how much you can do yourself, ie, removing the rear 3rd member and the front diff and taking them to a gear shop. Regearing is NOT for the novice as major damage can be done with a minor screw-up during the process. have a reputable GEAR shop do the work, not just a general mechanic. it is also helpful if the shop has plenty of experience with toyota gear swaps.
expect from $150-400 per diff off the truck and double that or more if you just drop it off and they do all the work. Call around and get quotes.
PORC will have the best prices on the parts.

for the 2.7 AT and 33s go to 4.88s for the current 'stock' equivalent of a 4.56:1 adjusted ratio. The newer 2.7 ATs come stock with 4.56s for the 31" tires. 4.88s and 33s adjust out to a 4.58:1 ratio.

Thats for reply guys, I have a 99. Im not sure what gears i have. Ive changed my mind, prob run 32's so i dont have to cut anything. I feel pretty comfertable with working on my truck and i have the hayes repair manual so im sure i could remove the 3rd memeber and just take the diff in... Is the an easy way to find out what ratio it comes stock with, i feel like im probably looking right over it...thanks again..

check your dr side door panel for a little plate with codes.
look for one that starts with "RZN___" and another that starts with "BO__"

post these.

With the AT you most likely have either 4.10s (designed for 235 size factory tires), or, 4.56s (for 31" factory tires).
But...since you list TRD in your sig you should have 4.10s even with the 2.7. do you have the e-locker?

Rear 3rd and front diff removal/install is pretty straight forward if you have at least some wrenching experience and have the Haynes. They are just heavy, not hard to get in and out. ;) It can be done with one person but an extra set of hands really helps. A floor jack is nice to let the front diff down with too.

well, I've learned a new one today ;) you seem to have 3.91 gears with an AT...first time I've come across that one. (I guess it's a prerunner thing, LOL) With the 2.7 those gears are designed for 225 size tires (28s). I would regear to 4.56 for 32s. A good used set of 4.30s might also be a good choice. (not available aftermarket except from the dealer for mega bucks)

To confirm your ratio make a well seen mark on your driveshaft; jack up the rear of the truck. turn the rear wheel 10 revolutions while counting the # or DS revolutions. DS revs:wheel revs is your ratio. 39:10 would be 3.91 gears.

hey, still havnt thought about it when im out there to look at the numbers... my truck seems to be having other problems right now... i think the starter had gone bad on it... :( nothing is cheap... I currently have the 31x10.50 on there now... so from what you guys are saying .. it sound like beeftaco and i might be a little different.. i will def get those numbers up here tomorrow.. beeftaco, what year is your truck? and what size tires do you have on there now? I wouldnt think toyota would gear that far out of whack.. putting 31s on a gear that is made for 28s? anyways... ill get those numbers up here

manual tranny should have 4.30s; 4.56s with the AT. either is fine with your 33s but you will notice a power drop, especially on long inclines or hauling/towing.

RZN = 2.7 engine
196L = Prerunner
BO7A = 4.30:1 ratio, 2 pinion open diff
factory 265 size tires

BO6 is for 3.91 gears.
factory 235 size tires

this is of course theoretical as there have been noted exceptions to the charts.

two of your figures would be new to me. I don't believe there are such ratios in the Tacos or any other Toyota that uses the same rearend.

BO6B designates a 3.91:1 ratio and a 4-pinion, open diff

BO5 designates a 3.15:1 ratio found in some of the early v6 trucks that came with 205 size tires. code # is VZN150L CRSDKAB. Both are regular cab (150L) v6 (VZN) trucks. '97-98 and some '00. My guess is that these are minis with the 6 and are the spring-under type, not a 4x4 or Prerunner.

you won't find all the BO codes that are listed on that list in the real world.

that part of the original chart..."using the above codes would result in thefollowing axle codes:" is an extrapolation of the first part of the BO data, just putting all the possible number/letter combinations on paper.

Since 4x4s and Prerunners all have the 8" rear diffs you won't see the 'AO__' code on any of them but in theory the 2.4L minis should have them since their rear ends are 7.5" for the most part.

you should have 4.30s. toyota's website still shows all Tacomas as either having 3.91s (manual) or 4.10s (AT) even after 3 years of emails to them with corrections. they don't seem to care. the window sticker reflects the website's misinformation, unfortunately.

I'm on 34 LTB swampers with 2.7 and 4.10's 4.10s are good up to 32's but dont go higher I have no 5th with 34's on :)

that's essentially a 31x9.50 why not go with a 265/70/16
regear to 4.30s for optimum and 4.10s for "ok".

jack up the rearend. make a white mark on the driveline and another on the tire. spin the tire counting dl revolutions for each full turn of the wheel. make 10 wheel revs and see how many dl revs you get. ex: 41 dl to 10 wheel will be 4.10s, 35.8:10 will be 3.58s

Would there be any differences in the diffs. Anything to look for before buying. Thanks for your guys help. rear diffs on the Tacos are all the same regardless of engine...either e-locker (TRD) or open or non-TRD. In your case any non-TRD 3rd will work.
just shop for the gear ratio you want.
