View Full Version : NEEDED: Reliable fab shop for roll cage build
4WD Toyota Owner Magazine
03-01-2007, 08:46 AM
4WD Toyota Owner magazine is building up an FJ Cruiser to race in the Baja 500 in June. You can see it at our web page.
Our current cage builder has proven flaky as hell.
We need a recommendation on a fab shop in SoCal that can get a SCORE certifiable cage done--and get it done on time.
We would showcase the hell out of the shop/fabber in multiple issues.
Any shops/web sites/ numbers would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Dave
Dave, I know I don't really need to point you to our sponsor page, now do I?
Should be a few up there that can fill your needs!I would think your only limitations would be how far you want to travel.
don't forget about CBI, WABFAB as well as others that support our club.

Of course. None that I saw (did I miss one) does cage fabbing. CBI is in Idaho and WabFab back east. Need SoCal shop where we can take the truck for fabbing. I have a call into Demello though.

Camburg would be a good one. Arie down there is top notch (Jason and Jeremy are ok, I guess! haha j/k). I don't know how busy they are with their racing efforts, but I'm sure they would be willing to help out.

Plus, it'll be good since they would be going up against Donahoe! (depending on what class you race) lol Clean competition between competitors is always good for progression. :D
Youu probably got everyone I was thinking about. I know the two I referenced are long distance for you, that is why I said something about distance being your limitation.:D
My first thought was Demello actually! so I guess maybe you did not miss anyone.
Where is Blue torch located at? I am thinking they could do a good job. Never mind, they are further than anyone else.LOL
How about these guys? http://www.hendrixmotorsports.com/ they build chassis for crawlers!

What ever happened to Plowman's 5 car? and the 7 open truck?
Anyways, from the sponsors list I would highly recommend the Camburglars.
If you go away from the list (which some of the veteran TTORA members would probably not be fond of), I recommend Blitzkrieg or Castle Fab.

I would always go to TTORA sponsors first, if possible!

Where are you guys located exactly? Also, you may want to rethink your rear bumper - you're not gonna want to get nerfed on your spare. And don't you think the front bumper might be a little heavy for Baja?? Just my 2 cents. Looks like a cool project, and a good versatile machine, I'm just not sure if it's Baja-worthy enough.

I know the owners of Baja Shop had somewhat of a falling out, and Hustler Concepts was one of the results. My buddy's class 1 was a Baja Shop until the split and was finished as a Hustler. Badass, fast car, just still getting dialed in.

Thanks, Mike. Good to know. Debut race? You don't have to answer that as it'll clog up the thread :p

You'd probably get more suggestions if you posted this up on a board with more socal members. Probably race-dezert.com or desertrides.com would be your best bets.
they make the APPROVED formula toy cages
yea! thats what I meant. Being "speed racer" on the key boards sometimes gets in the way!
thanks for catching that!

I would always go to TTORA sponsors first, if possible!
Try these,
Wicked Motorsports in Garden Grove, ask for Mike Boone (tell him Corey Schafer sent ya)
DMZ
Link Motorsports
Camburg
the biggest issue i see is you are asking a shop to do something fast that normally you would want to take a hair more time on and make sure its right... dont use any fly by night places the end outcome will blow... also you better be prepared to kick out alot of cash, because i dont think any of these places are going to pay out of their pocket for your cage.

How many TTORA sponsors are Baja experienced (especailly fab) except for Donahoe and a couple others? Try DesertTRD's suggestions. Ive heard those names alot throughout the desert community. Good luck :o

It's not necessarily that because ALL of those guys CAN build stout cages. It's the fact that they have to be aware of SCORE's rules and requirements so it can get tagged. Have you seen what the Jeepspeed from Pirate can do? Baja experience?
Per 4WDTO, they have all the suspension planned. they just need a cage that will pass SCORE tech. Not much extra fabbing they way you're talking about..
BK?????

Yeah, this is neither the place or the time, but that would be funny nonetheless :D

X2, those guys are great, was there yesterday checking out my buddies yota, good stuff. Really cool guys too. Don't know why some people have a problem with them. Maybe they turned out some not-so top quality stuff back in the day, but now :kewl: :kewl:

Ha Ha, Yeah i'd bet they'd love an FJ with a Total Chaos LT kit on it in their shop. Maybe then they could actually get their LT kit right. He he he.
Release your kit already guys, WTF? :D

Thanks, Mike. Good to know. Debut race? You don't have to answer that as it'll clog up the thread :p
First race was Parker 425 last year. Issues with the front arm bushings. DNF. Vegas 2 Reno - engine problems. DNF.
Primm - found big hole avoiding another accident in the dust, landed awkwardly, snapping trailing arm bolt - DNF.
Parker 425 '07 - Started 35ish, moved up to 10th, lost a limit strap or heim or something like that which led to a shock blowing out in a corner, and a slow roll. DNF.
Primm: (one-race sponsor and paint job, some local tattoo shop)

oh, the ups and downs of getting the bugs out (except for that racing incident you described at Primm). 35th to 10th?Looks like he's getting faster and faster and still dialing it in. Looking forward to see some top finishes.....and Tattoo shop? Niiiiice. haha I'll have to hit you up on the Hot spots in Palm Desert as my parents just got their house finished up there. It looks as if I'll have a place to shower, rest, and eat on my way back home from the Dunes and desert. :D

Paul, if you see him working on something that is pretty wide with all the bells and whistles, roughly 9", keep it on the hush hush and .....please....no pictures. LOL!

Yah, he's super fast, but sometimes he's too fast. He co-drives most the SCORE races with me in the 12 car, which means he usually passes a whole bunch of people, then hits a big rock or cactus or something and I get the car all battered and bruised...
Where in PD?

Thanks for all the great input.
Bumper--yeah, it's not PERFECT for Baja, but the truck is not being purpose-built for Baja, but later 4WD stuff too like the Rubicon.
Metal is coming from Caltime Metals.
Spare Mickey Thompson will be inside, not mounted externally.
Should be a wild ride!

one words of advice. Get your cage etc.. done by someone that current does stuff for SCORE! DMZ, Camburg, etc..
Demello's a good shop, just dont know if they have ever done anything SCORE legal.
ALso going with a shop that has done SCORE legal vechicals, you dont have to buy a score book. LOL saves you $15.00
Again just to go over. Go with a shop that currently races. SCore, MDR, CORE etc..

No again on Baja Shop.
SKG is pricey as hell. They charged 1,500 for a guys custom prerunner bumper and it actually included a skidplate with that price haha. They did tig weld it and powdercoat it though.
I'd suggest either SDTruckShop here in San Diego, they are doing 2 100grand trucks right now though(might be too busy) but they might build my score legal cage. Owner races MDR. Or Link Motorsports.
