View Full Version : Another leaf swap blah blah blah

I had grand dreams of having a shop do a three link for me but then woke up and realized I owed a shit load in taxes this year. I had already re-geared the tail and had most of the parts i needed to do a leaf swap so I gave in and started cutting. HUGE thanks to wheelerjake for coming down for a couple of days and helping out with the cutting/grinding/welding. I should have her sitting on tires by this weekend and hopefully ready for kiddie trails at azrocks.
The blah blah stuff....
FROR kit minus the drop bracket to keep it low.
Marlin 4" springs, 14" bils 5125, used from taco1
35" maxxis bighorns on crager soft 8's
And the fun stuff....
Before pic on 35's She measured in at 20 3/4" to the ground from the front body mount, 21 3/4" in the rear

Super WEEEE. Good luck on getting it ready for the kiddie trails by AzRocks. I'll be running some kiddie trails in mine too. Firday I'm supposed to lead a group on an easy run. Saturday should be stepping it up a little.

Sawsall is how quite a few have been done. If done right, the saws all leaves less to clean up. They are not as fancy as a plasma, but a sawsall and grinder goes a long ways.
sounds like a ton more work to me.

Got the axle hanging. Adjusted for the body angle its sitting at 48*. This the second attempt so im thinking about leaving at this. The springs are used on a Tacoma already so they should not sag much. Here is the angle, do you all think its worth cutting off and moving a half inch forward? I want to keep it low anyway, in the photo its sitting at 25" on the front and its about 2 inches high to mount the tires. I would be really happy to come it at 23" to the front body mount.

I think it looks pretty good, but can't tell how much weight is on there. I was just discussing this recently and here is a good thing to go by, measure your front hanger bolt hole, center, to top bolt center hole of the shackle, then measure center shackle top hole to bottom center shackle bolt hole. Add the 3 together. Mine come out to 47.25". The top bolt to bolt is 42.25" and my shackle is 5" My leaf springs are 47 inches long exact, therefore when my leafs are totally flat, I will not be able for the shackle to hit the frame as the total length is longer than the leafs. So if your 3 measurements are longer than your leafs, your good to go. I have never had my shackle hit the frame and I've had my leafs go past flat and into the negative arch. If my total number were 46, then I would hit the frame or come REALLY REALLY REALLY close to hitting.

You castor looks like its going to be way off. You should only be at about 5 degrees + max. I don't know, maybe its just me, but it looks like its going to be off. You might benifit from turning the knuckles some to get the pinion up too. That would fix the castor issue and low pinion angle. I think guys are turning anywhere from 8 degrees to 15 degrees.

42 plus the shackle bolts eye to eye is what you need to add up, those numbers should be longer than the leaf spring length, which is prolly 47 if you are using toy. spec'd leafs.
My Alcans and Marlins springs are 47. My measurements are 47.25
If I ever wanted to use Marlin 5 in lifts springs It would be a crap shoot for me, since his 5 in lifts leafs are 47.5 in long.

I am planning on keeping the knukles stock rotation for now. I will hopefully be able to afford a crawl box in september after my bonus comes in and i recover from taxes. I will probably rotate them then and go to a cv driveshaft. until then im going to go with the cheap regular style 2 joint shaft.

hey dude,
weather you rotate the knuckles now or later shouldnt matter, mine are not rotated, but trust me, spend the extra money for the CV style shaft now, I dont think you will like it otherwise. just my 2 cents. cant wait to see your updated pics though.

Although the concern is for the driveshaft angle, it is as much a concern about the castor. If you do not plan on driving the truck on the highway, then its a non issue, but if you DD it then that is a different story. Drive it and see what happens. If you can live with it the way it is then great, less work in the long run. I went through all these issues with mine and it took a lot of time to figure it out. You may not have the same issues I had though, good luck.

Its not a DD so if the driveshaft vibrates on the way to the trail i probably wont care much. The problems I am having right now are:
1. The axle is sitting a bit farther forward than I wanted. I think Im going to have to drill a new hole for the center pin. Does it look too far forward in the pics? The full weight of the truck is on the tires, there is no weight on the jack stands.
2. I was hoping to be able to pull a leaf out of my original leaf pack and add it to the deaver and get to go high enough so I need to go find a set of chebbies.
3. I realized I was not going to make it for AZROCKS and lost all motivation.
It looks like i get to be full time camaraman/spotter for AZROCKS. Anyone want a co-pilot to shoot pics/movies the whole time? I'll probably come up sat only.

If the high pressure line is the in line than thats backwards from what wartoy said. Now im confused. Although you sounded more confident in your answer so im going with what you said for now.
Edit: i was think im backwards on the definition of front and back. IF im reading this right the hole closest to the splined input shaft is the low pressure and the one towards the front is the high?
Mark in Az

Sorry, I think about them as high & low pressure because mixing them up makes one hell of a mess. In this pic of Mike Ross' truck you can see the low pressure hose on the rear, near the splined input shaft like you said.

Its taking a bit longer than I wanted but its getting close. Im going to cut out the final frame rail braces and get them on tomorrow night, if im feeling ambitious I might try to put the shocks on. The steering shaft/setup was a bitch and took all day. As is its putting a little bit of pressure on one of the hard line coils. The coil appears to be part of the ABS lines so that will go away eventually. Also the steering arms are not quite tall enough. The clear at full turn with weight on the axle by about 1/8" so when flexing there is no way it will turn. Going to order some 1/2" spacers and longer studs tomorrow.

Its an enormous pain in the ass? The angles on the frame where the shackles mount are pretty funky. The rear brackets are gusseted on the inside of the frame rail. Much easier setup. when all is said and done I will be sitting at around 24" to the frame.

Minus bumpstops. Its been returned to its state as 4x4 truck, no more pre-runner. It drives awesome, no death wobble with the 35's, even without a steering stabilizer.
Final pieces:
14" rear shocks. I went with a different approach than most. The new xmember is a piece of 4"x1" channel that came out of a scrap pile, it was from a trailer frame. There are plates welded to the outside of the frame to reinforce it. The mounting points are 2 x .120 wall square tube drilled and one side cut out. When the chebbies are flat the shocks have about 1.5" of up-travel left in them.

We put in the FROR xmember and driveshaft on sat afternoon. we went to the closest flex spot we could find. not spectacular but it was close. I did put the whole truck sideways on that hill, off camber actually felt more stable than it did before the swap. that was a weird feeling.

The last major bug. You can see where the xmember has been slapping the filter. It was a pain in the ass to figure out what was going on cause it only happened at higher speeds or occasionally when accelerating. As soon as you take your foot off the gas it went away no matter what the speed. The fuel filter bracket does not bend easily so I think im going to have to cut the xmember bracket off and lower it.
