How many 4x2 Tacomas go off roading?

I know all the 4x4s take their tacos off roading but I want to know who takes their 4x2 off roading? If so, how extreme do you take it? Also when should I use the rear locker when I go off roading? Just started takin my 2wd off roading and it rides pretty nice although I almost got stuck in the mud.

yeah im a 2wd open diff taco..with 33" mudders..mud isnt a problem

but i do a lot of desert stuff..and trails..and i can do a lot of what 4x4's can..so i feel pretty good

yea...actually its the tires...i just bought it a month ago so i need to change those small tires they give you. what size should i get with the stock wheels? it is now 245/75/16. should i go with 285/75/16?

I hunt and fish, both in South Florida and Catskill Mts, New York. In Fl. I can get through short (50') sections of sugar sand in D-2 but you cannot stop and if you start to bog you have to have a place to go to. I check out on foot first. You can go through long sections of 2 foot of water if you have a hard sand bottom. I avoid mud and marsh if needle grass is present. In NY I am on old logging roads (only if dry) and old RR grades and cross "small" creeks. I avoid clay. Never been in the snow. I have no locker and tires are Sigma Stampede 265/70R16

'02 Pre-Runner 29K miles, TRD S/C 7th kit, headers, cat back, air filter. Monomax shocks, Summit anti roll traction springs, ARE hard tonneau cover, bedliner with home made bed rug (1/2" marine plywood w/ in-out carpet) and asst. chrome and lights. LOVE THIS TRUCK!!!

ive done some mild mudding. i have not the craziest tredded tires but they get the job done. i have only used the locker when im stuck, but when i get stuck i have to get pulled out, so it really serves no perpose. desert stuff is the best, anyway. i went into a field which haddnt been touched realy and the serface was muddy but about 1/2 inch down it was fine. my tires spun faster than i was going but i had no problem.

I have gone through some mild stuff, but I know my limitations. If you carry a little momentum you can make it through minor mud holes but I always look for an alternative dryer route if at all possible. I hunt and fish alot off of dirt and gravel roads and so far no problem (knock on wood). The way I see it is this, I am not making monthly payments on a truck that cost thousands of dollars to go beat the s**** out of it. I have lots of friends with 4 wheel drives and off roading is much more enjoyable when you can go for the ride and know its not your stuff getting broken and trashed. If I decide I want to become more of a participant I will go buy an old beater 4x4 that I could care less about and if it breaks no big deal I will get around to fixing it when money and time allows. I was heavy into drag racing before this and I learned the hard way that it is not wise to utilize your daily driver as your race car. Many a weekend at the strip ended up costing me a ton of time, money, and inconvenience just so that I could have a way to get my ass to work on Monday and pay for the damage done Friday night. I think the same holds true for trucks, 4x4 or not, I might do a mild lift and other aesthetic mods because I like the way it looks but I am not seriously off roading my nice daily driver. Just enjoy having a good looking reliable truck, thats why I bought my taco, and I enjoy it everday. :)

I took mine out to a park here in Mi. (Hines drive for anyone in S.E. Mi.) and they have ALOT of dirt trails mainly for just parking to use picnic locations, well I went through some snow, puddles, mud and the only problem I had was giving it too much gas going into the snow/mud mix and losing traction and getting sideways. when I went into serious mud I would get on the gas right about the time the front tires where hitting the fun brown stuff :D and it seemed to go smooth but I'm not hitting the thick mud anytime soon just in case I do get stuck

Hey man, I have 31" bfg a/t's, no locker or anything, and it's a 4 cylinder. I don't have any problems going out in the fields after a long hard rain to get to my tree stand. I have put my truck through some serious mud and water and I have always come out just fine. Just realize it's not 4wd, so don't put your truck in a local fishing hole and expect to get out, yes, I have seen people do this. I started out always mudding with other 4wd's but now me and some 2wd's go out and mud on our own, no worries, there good trucks!!!!

i got michelen ltx m/s and have never been stuck, best on/off road combo tires for the money i believe. i have not seen another tire that will get near 100k street miles perform so well off-road. mine are 30x9.50 but next i plan 3" revtek and sum 32x11.50's on stock 15's. i got open diff and no problems just use ur brain. me and NCbeeftaco are goin wheelin together sumtime soon so maybe we can have sum pics for yall.

yeah, but i'd definatly avoid Hines Drive the other half of the year when its all under water. Are you from livonia?

lol when isnt that park flooded over? I'm on the Redford / Detroit border so its just down the road from me. I think thats going to be my practice grounds until I sprout some clockweights to take it up to silver lake

I have been off roading in my prerunner several times. PreRunners go really good for a 2 wheel drive truck, especially if you have the locker, just don't expect to go everywhere 4x4's go. I would say that I am ALMOST equal with a stock z-71, but I have had to be pulled out by 4x4's more than once in the deep stuff. I have decided to make my truck a street queen though, since I need this truck to last me without having to replace bearings and stuff all the time and last time I went off road I came pretty close to screwing up big time when I got stuck in a creek with water up to the hood. Overall I would say the prerunner with a locker will get you everywhere you NEED to go, and most places you WANT to go, but im gonna try to keep mine out of the nasty stuff from now on.

I know this is a newbie question but, how do you know if your truck has a locking rear diff.? I just bought a 2001 supercharged 4 cyl. Prerunner and I'm new to this. I know it has bilstien shocks(which I believe comes with the TRD package) and SR5 package. Thanks for the help.

I take my 2wd anywhere and everywhere. I've been from the deserts to the snow in Big Bear. I actually pulled out a 4wd Denali with my 2wd Taco, I didn't embarass him too bad in front of his family.

Iv got 3 body, 3 suspension, and 285-75-16..... radials :| My truck goes through alot of stuff, the only times I get stuck is if the rear axle is scraping on the ground in between ruts.

Ya i just started off roading in my 2wd prerunner and she still mobs just fine throught a lot of stuff. Momentum is the key when goin through mud though. I mostly drive desert anyways so 2wd will work just fine. A warn air locker is my next upgrade and it should make a big difference.

i got a prerunner tacoma with open lock, i went up some dirt trails stock tires, got stuck once but it was off trail, had a buddy in a 90 full size jimmy pull me off...nothing hardcore yet

hey greenrunner. i'm down to roll to the desert. i've been going solo (with a passenger) but i'd rather go in a group. Mike (mikesdoublecab) hit me up about going with them to hodge (south of barstow) but i haven't gotten back to him yet. apparently a handful of them go at least once a month. we should all roll!

PreRunners are pretty darn capable. Granted they wont go where 4x4's can go. You can do mild wheeling, desert trails, forest or fire roads, some mud, etc. But realize you are only 2wd. Even with a locker you can easily get stuck. Whelling in a PreRunner is 70% driver 20% truck 10% luck.

I take my PreRunner through a little bit.. I have jumped it over terraces in logging trails, and stuff. I know PreRunners aren't mud machines but for general off-road, they're great! I like going fast on dry stuff, getting it sideways, stuff like that.
