I have a v6 TRD Prerunner and I have a few questions about Pismo. This summer a group of friends and I are taking a trip to Pismo and I want to know how will a stock prerunner fair in the dunes. I've been to Glamis and didn't have any problems when I aired down, is pismo sand the same or similar. Any help welcome

If you have been to glamis then pismo will be cake walk.. Glamis is alot softer sand due to lack of the ocean... pismo sand is actually alot easier to drive in, just make sure you dont drive over teh end of any bowls or witcheyes.. Travel with another truck (preferable 4wd) and have fun.. When are you planning on going, we normally hold runs that way every so often with a pretty large group, its alot of fun.

We will be going tword the end of june, between the 20 and 28 not sure exaxctly. we will be going with several 4wd trucks (3 explorers and a toyota pickup) we will also have a 2wd ranger and 2 2wd explorers with alot of work done to them. This will be my first time to Pismo so I really excited.

When you are burried, it will help occasionally. If you are already on top and moving, it makes donuts more fun. :D

Where is pismo at? I was thinking about heading out to play in the sand last week, but I didn't know where to do except Glamis. what PSI are you guys running. Also just so nobody gets mad, I did do a search for pismo before I posted this, this seems to be a touchey subject on this forum.

Ohh yea and a forwarning!!

Dont drive into the ocean LOL... common sence should tell you this but i still see people do it all the time... thats a surefire way to make the life of your vehicle alot less real quick.

2wd is fine. i have a 2.7 liter with 4.88s and have absolutely no problem in the dunes. just air down to about 10psi, and if you need to you can go as low as 4-6psi (just dont turn too sharp)... also, unless you have a couple 4wd trucks with you, i wouldnt go too far into the outback, especially since youre not too familiar with pismo. i say a couple 4wd trucks cuz, if you only go with 1 4wd and it gets stuck youre screwed lol...

Hey guys...i had a similar question to this thread. Im heading out to pismo mid june with my 01 prerunner 3.4L V6 without TRD or the e-lock and i was wondering how well i could be able to run out there with my stock gears? I also have only stock radials: 265/70R16 and hoping to get 285/75R16 BFG A/T soon...so will that make a big difference also? thanks for any help.

You will probably get better float with those stockers then the BFGs. Just air way down (10psi or maybe less) and keep up your momentum. Just remember no sharp turns at that low air pressure.

And post on the board when you're going up. There's a few of us in Ventura County maybe we could caravan up.

fellow californians nice! well with my boys and i just getting into the off-roading crap central cali doesn't have too much, and when i mean central i mean in the bay area...so we go to this plus called summit Rd. its just dirt trails, nothing hardcore, but i did get stuck on a hill that was a trail for about 20 feet then ended...i was also riding on stock tires, no grip, and plus not having rear locks, it didn't make it any easier

but sisn't pismo pretty strict? i heard the rangers or watever get pretty anal down there

oh and Mateo could u add 285's on stock lift?

YoTRacer158

they're only strict if youre being dumb, follow the rules and youre golden...and no 285's wont fit stock

Mateo

Oh ya i have a 3.5" fabtech coilover lift and 4.5" GW fiberglass, if i forgot to mention it, so ya the 285's fit just fine after minor trimming. I also went with the Nitto Terra Grapplers instead of the bfg's mainly because of the price, but the offroad exceptionally well. Good tires. And oh ya last minute pismo run, ill also post in the events section, this weekend june 24-26. Just a few of my buddies are goin to chill and mob the dunes. well see how i do...haha

Pismo is nothing. I made it out there in my stock 2.7 with no mods. Go all the way out in the back to the wall and do that hill. I usually rin 4 psi in the rear and 6 in the front. The stock rims should hold it ok. Hey try jumping your truck. I got about 2.5 feet of a dune.

Oppositeboy

Stock trucks are not meant to be jumped. One or two times may not hurt much, but afterwards, check for dents in the cab where the bed hit it, check the frame, motor mounts, suspension, etc.

ya i actually did jump my rig about 3 feet off the top of a big dune, it was sick, wish i got video tho, oh well. and it didnt harm anything at all, i didnt even bottom out, and the fabtech suspension proved just fine. no tweaking of the frame, no rubbing, or dents, shes still strong. and pismo is no problem at all with 2wd, easy and a hell of a lot of fun, i just aired down to 8 psi in the rear, and 10 in the front, it was fine.

You guys should get a body lift and then go jump it. i hear that it's way better and the landing will be a lot smoother.

i'm sorry but jumping a stock truck is just flat out stupid.

Mateo

i agree with the idea that jumping a stock truck is a little stupid...u can really mess things up.

oh and also im sorry but if u plan on jumping your truck big serioulsy over dunes, do not get a body lift...once u see a couple trucks with body lifts that jump pretty big, and the truck lands and instantly gets stuck in the sand, whereas the body maintains momentum and rips off of the frame, causing u to total your truck and get yourself airlifted out, then u might change your mind about body lifts. ive seen it happen twice.

BTW 285s will fit if you have coilovers ! just make sure you do a little cutting on some plastic around the wheel well and do the pinch weld mod also and you shouldn't have any problems! Also when i got to pismo I air down the rears to about 5 psi and keep the fronts around 10 psi!
