Well my 97 4 cyl 4runner did not start today.

I replaced the battery about 6 months ago, but clearly it almost no charge today.

I worried it's not being recharged. The battery terminal connections are clean and well secured.

I'm guessing it may be the alternator, but I don't have test equipment other than a multi-meter.

Where do I start?

Have you jumped it to insure it will start?

After you get it running use your volt meter to insure you are getting a charge of 13.7-14.4 volts.

If not then it is a good indication that your Alternator may being going south.
If you are then your battery may be bad. I have purchased brand new batteries before to have them go out in a few months.

How close are you to an autoparts store?

Do you have another vehicle to drive?

You can drive for some ways on just a fresh, fully charged battery if you can get it jump started. Then have AtoZone, Advance, Carquest, whoever, test your alternator and battery. Could be that your battery has a dead cell and that took out the alternator.

If it IS the alternator, and you can be without the truck for a week or two, I would send it to Boyle Future Tech in CA to be rebuilt. Molly and I had ours done there, and they are AWESOME!

I'm going to try and jump her in the AM then break out the meter.

What two contact should I test for 13.7-14.4 volts? I assume I should test at the terminals, but assumptions for noobs are never safe;)

I can use Claudia's car for the weekend, and during the week it's not an issue because I bike to work so, yes I have a car if/when needed.

I'm close to checker, so if I can get her running and charged, then I'll have them take a look. Thats were I bought the battery, so if it is the battery I will have somebody to whine at.

If my fear of a buster alternator is correct, I would certainly consider sending it out to be fixed.

The Toyota dealership, which was on my way home from work wanted $260 something for a new alternator -so anything < than that sounds great ;)

It was like $118 including return shipping to have ours rebuilt. They did 60A max before, now they do almost that at idle and 120A max.

I need to get back to biking to work...

Today I popped the hood and reseated a few connections, resat the starter relay, and tryed to start her up.

This time I heard clicking. Maybe I was just mising it yesterday, or maybe I fixed a loose connection.

Next step was to jump it.

So, after 10 minutes of trying to start her up while connected to my neighbor's car, she finally started.

I cautiously made my way over to checker. They tested, and... All looks well, outside of low battery charge.

Next, I drove to loveland to make sure the battery would be charged, and to test my luck.

Maybe I have been blessed this time.

One thing i learned with the VW's is Grounds and connections are a huge issue with anything. Im seeing it more on the truck then with my old racecar but i still see it. I have had this stupid starter issue twice now. I have figured it to be when the truck twists its not grounding well or the power wire is not making good contact or both. I just replaced it with its 2nd starter in 9 months(wow shes been back for a while)

I would say clean up anything to do with the charging system. pull the grounds and clean up under them and the bolts. Positive connections do the same. I added a regrounding kit to mine and it helped out too. you can make one with some small conectors and some 10-8 gauge wire.
