Swapping the 60's under my POS. Here's what it looked like this morning after yesterdays run. No updated pics, but all the leaf mounts, shock mounts, track bar mount(don't ask, stupid ass's that put a track bar on a rear leaf suspension:rolleyes: ), and brake line mount are all cut off. More cutting to come tomorrow.

like anyone driving a yota cares about straight axles... geez miller.
everyone knows that if you have the same size tires on your IFS rig you can go anywhere a swapped rig can go! :xdevil: O canada...?(allen) oh please chime in :D
oh, and since everyones got a view of the stacks of tires in our garage... Theres a new (0 miles) 31x10.50R15 BFG A/T in there for sale, its not actually visible in that picture though. Too bad no one in tacama-land runs anything but a 16 inch rim...
about time! - oh and what about all the shit talk that you'd have it done in a day

Spring under disassembly isn't fun, and it was done(apart) in a day. Eric said he wanted pics of it Monday morning on jackstands. Well it was on jackstands Saturday afternoon just a few hours after we got back!:saw: :saw: :saw: I saved time because I didn't have to remove a camper shell to start the swap:D

What TBob said, that was the best mod I did in the pre-60 era. Gaining over 3" of belly clearance. And it's flat to the frame, not flat but 2" below the frame:rolleyes:

Well, it has slowly evolved, but thanks for the compliment. When I first came out to FJ, the Jeep had 31's, cut fenders and bumpers, and that's it, all stock. Ran Elvis, Jackhandle, and Upper Woodpecker. Then I added 2" motor mount lift, 1" body lift and 1" shackle lift(only helps with side and belly clearance because they hang low in front and back). Then I ran Lower Woodpecker, Martinez, Axle Alley, and previous mentioned trails. Then I did the flat-skid and added Upper Ajax, Ecstacy, and running the difficult lines on the other trails I've already run, along with some Table Mesa and Willow Springs action.

I was dabbling in the garage before the run. Looks like I'm gonna stretch the front forward 2.5" on stock YJ leafs spring over, rear is gonna go back about 12.5" on stock XJ leafs spring over, which should put it at 109". All the mounts as high up as I can get them to keep it as low as possible and counting the 37" Creepy's I have(which will make it 3" higher over the 31's), it looks like it'll only sit 4" higher than it is right now. Front WMS is 67", rear is 66", should put it at 82" and 81" outside of tire to outside of tire.

More progress. Got back into town today. Did some more grinding and measuring. Mike(not Heatstroke) came over and was a big help in getting everything tacked on the rear of the Jeep. Got the rear crossmember, shackle hangers, leaf mounts, leaf perches and shock mounts all in place. Just have to make a few gussets and upper shock mounts for fab work on the rear. The rear is stretched 11.5" in the pic, making the wheelbase at 105.5"(the front is getting stretched ~2.5"). The axle will probably move back a pinch more when the normal weight that is in the Jeep gets placed on the springs.

I have to pull the skid to change the tranny output seal and when I do, I'll take a pic of the welds ABOVE the skid that you can't see so you'll shut up already. The skid was cut with a plasma so it was very uneven and undercut on both outer sides. And just to make you happy, I'll have Jake weld the outer part that you can see, which is less than 1/4 of the welding that is on the skid:welder: :saw: :welder:
P.S. Jake, don't forget to thank TBob for the additional work he has just given you.

Well, the chevy shortside shaft I have is off by 1/16" from the measurements that all the online info and companies give you, so that's cool. And the longside is gonna be custom anyway, so it's all good;)

It's a good thing I measured my stock inners before cutting and ordering and stuff, cause they were off by enough to screw me over from vendor and internet info. The shortside was short by 1/8", not bad, but the longside was long by 7/16-1/2".

Got the rear hubs, studs, and brakes put together today and taped off to paint them. Got the pinion on the rear housing with the yoke, cleaned out the carrier and installed it, ground the bottom of the diff smooth and the cover to match and put the cover on. Ordered up some seals for the front axle, u-bolt kits for the yokes and misc stuff. Measured the rear shafts so I can get those cut tomorrow and the custom front shaft so I can order that tomorrow. The other side of the front is a standard length Chevy shortside shaft. Got just a little more work to do tomorrow, then it's time to cover up the raw steel with some paint and assemble it. Here's a pic of the front axle with with the new tubes and caster angle. Specs are 67" WMS, Chevy shortside shaft(17 11/16"), 32 1/2" longside shaft, 10 degree pinion angle, 3 degree caster angle.

Got the rear done today, here are the pics. Stretched 11.5" like I said, 105.5" WB now. The shafts are Yukon 35-spline. This is not really at ride ehight, cause the jeep has a tank with almost 0 gas, no tools, spares, ice chest, so it will ride alot lower that it does now. The tires are 37's, so the same as the Creepy's I have in the garage. Also, the backspacing on these and width are the same as my setup, and it measures 81.75" from tire to tire.

Thanks for the props. I'm trying to get it ready for a trip me and some buddies go on with my parent's every Labor Day out to the Whiplash race in Snowflake. Hopefully will be driving by the 31st of August to load onto a trailer. Might not have the shock mounts and shocks like I want them, and probably not a front locker, but I won't need any of that for up there.

Also cut the round tube crossmember flush with the outside of the frame and ground it down smooth to tie in a new front "bumper/crossmember". Started to put a few lines on the frame, gonna grab something to eat real quick and start to mock up some brackets tonight.

This will sound weird cause I combined a bunch of posts into one, but deal with it.
Well I have everything for the front ready to be tacked into place, so that will probably happen tomorrow. Got lug nuts for the rear, ordered the fronts, got the tires popped off the rims for some repair, new ball joints, ordered brake lines, picked up the u-bolts and bolts for the spring hangers/shackle hangers, center pins for the leafs. Drilled a hole thru the webbing on the front for the u-bolt and elongated the u-bolt plate for the larger u-bolt. Took out all the vacuum switch crap from the transfer case and the switch I had under the dash, took the dixie horns out too. Pics to come tomorrow.
Pics from today so far, more to come later.

Under the Jeep on it's own weight. I actually made the front a little too far forward and too low, so I'm gonna run an ORD 1" zero-rate to level the Jeep out(or atleast closer to level) and so the pitman arm doesn't hit the diff. Front ended up 2.5" forward and is at 108" WB right now.

hey ryan any updates?
If you want updates Bob, updates you shall have! I cut the stock shock towers off the front last night and ground those smooth, got the shackles and axle ready to paint. Picking up some misc. parts for the front today, waiting on some shims, ball joints, caliper brackets, calipers, tie-rod reamer, upper shock mounts, front u-joints and shafts, and brake lines. All should be here by Friday except maybe the brake lines and shafts. Already got the new rotors and pads for the front. Gonna get all the outer stuff for the front axle ready for paint tonight and paint everything I have on Wednesday. Gotta patch up some spots on the tires and take those in Friday to get mounted and pick up the front lug nuts. Picking up my steering kit from Jeff at Ballistic tomorrow. Measured for my shocks and am gonna build front hoops up thru the inner fenders to the underside of the hood and run 13.5" travel shocks and in the back gonna put a big hoop up thru the tub and run 14.5" travel shocks. Lots of progress will be made once these parts start rolling in.
sounds good - goin though the tub and the fenders to keep chit low :kewl:

More progress. I have the caliper brackets, calipers, pads, rotors, ball joints, front lug nuts. upper shock mounts, front seals, and a Chevy steering kit. Got the knuckles and and pitman arm tapered for the larger TRE's, patched up the Creepy Crawlers, painted the rims(I hate that stupid blue and red stripe on the black rims), tires are mounted on the rims now. Started cleaning up the outers for the front end, got all the axle shafts apart and cleaned waiting for the new u-joints. Gonna get some work done on it now and hopefully have it on the ground tomorrow.

Front WMS is 66.5-67" and rear is 66-66.25"(I was measuring by myself). Tire to tire is 82 1/2" in the front and 81 3/4" in the back approximately(for the same reason mentioned above).

Yeah, Steve and I were discussing that last, it's an optical illusion because the Jeep doesn't sit level side to side(driver's side sits higher), but the jackstands make the front axle sit level. But also that the body is bent down ALOT of the passenger side from the second Firehole attempt awhile ago.
Forgot to mention, it'll clear 42's without lifting it any higher or cutting anything up higher.

Alright hi-jackers, another daily update: driveshafts are ready, got all the little frame plates/crossmember end caps, leaf perch ramps and such cut and the frame cleaned and ready to weld. Called on my brake lines today, guy is gonna overnight them tomorrow so I'll have them Friday. Stupid little spindle nut nipple broke on the passenger side so I ordered a new set for the front, ordered shocks(15.5" travel), picked up new caliper bolts and shock bolts as well. Also got some tube to make shock hoops. Tomorrow gotta call on the front shaft and u-joints, pick up my other 2 TRE's from Ballistic, and do the steering. Gettin' there.

Hysteer wouldn't even have worked. My axle is a balljoint 60, so you have to mill, drill, and tap the knuckles for D44 steering arms. Even then and with a 1" spacer, I still wouldn't clear the passenger side leaf spring and would have big issues with the frame when the passenger side would tuck and the driver side drooped.

Yeah, I tried to atleast put the tie-rod over the knuckle, but there isn't even enough room for that hardly. I'd have to unbolt the leaf from one side to get the stud for the TRE into the knuckle and then tighten it back down. SO I just went with what would work. When I link the front, I'll do something different, but until then, I'm not scared to run it this way.
