View Full Version : Wrenchathon Labor day weekend?

The list of stuff that needs to be done before Moab keeps growing, and I'm gonna need some help.
- Install dual cases
Actually bolting them up is no biggie, but have to cut the floor, do the shifters, yadayadayada
- Air leak in rear third
Will have to totally disassemble the rear axle to drop the thirdmember. After that, fixing the ARB should be pretty easy (once I find what is broke and get the parts)
- Clutch
Figure now is the time while the drivetrain is out
- Turn signals
Have to diagnose why it's blowing fuses ... a lot of wiring to trace down!
Anyone available Labor day weekend?
Anyone have a tranny jack?

Ahhhhhhh, to bad I'll actually be IN MOAB for labor day weekend. I really would love to help, but...
Bring your truck up next weekend and maybe we can punch a few things off the list...

Probably have the truck, but there's no way I'm tearing into it anywhere other than my garage and not until I have something else to drive.
Nothing ever goes smoothly working on my truck - it's too old and ornery for that!

Il be there to help, just let me know time and adress
I have a 3 ton HD floor jack and 4 jack stands i used to do my clutch
Do the clutch when the trans out, i got a Flywheel at Checkers for the same price as turning the old one, with no core charge. Sam :D
AxleIke

I should be able to swing it.
I help with the diff and the clutch. I've done both several times.
I have an adapter to hook the ARB up to a CO2 Tank to find leaks easy. I'll bring my tank and reg, so we can set it to 90. Its how i bench tested both of mine.
It is my HIGHLY, HIGHLY recomended advice that you break down, spend the 20 bucks, and rent the tranny jack for a day from your local tool store. I've done it both ways, and it SUCKS with a floor jack. Also, either purchase or rent a pilot bearing puller. It is a must have, no options. Recomended this is done before the tear down.

08-18-2007, 11:12 AM
Thanks Isaac - where do you get a pilot bearing puller? Sears? Napa/Autozone/Carquest? Remember how much? Is it one of those tools where you really get what you pay for and need to get a good one?
RedRunnertc
08-18-2007, 11:15 AM
Oh - and Sam - you should see our garage now that we have both my stuff and molly's all in the same place... 2 3ton floor jacks, 4 pairs of jackstands, 2 creepers, every tool imaginable (well, except a pilot bearing puller apparently) ...
Wildturkee

sweet cant wait to see it. just leting you know that i have it, do you have a air compressure? i can bring extra air tools if you do. i have a 1/2' impact, 3/8 rachet, chisel w/ 3 diffrent bits, a cut off wheel, and a sawzall (air). let me know if you would like me to bring any of those. on the berring puller, make sure it is a small one, i rented one at advanced and it was a little too big. Also try to get one that is a slide hamer style, i modded the one from advanced to make it a slide hammer and it only took 3-4 good hits to get it out. where you buy it depends on how much you want/have to spend. usally you can rent them from autoparts stores, you bacicly pay for it and when you return it they refund your money. If you decide to buy one get one with every thing, and you can use it on other things also. just my :2cents:

Troy, if all goes correctly, I should be in Crestone visiting the family that weekend.
But if it doesn't happen that way, I'm all yours. In any case, I have a dremel to cut your floor out, bernz-omatic, etc and all sorts of misc. tools that may be of assistance (but which you probably already have in your garage).
i got a Flywheel at Checkers for the same price as turning the old one, with no core charge. Sam :D
Sorry to hijack, but I think my 2cents may help down the road. Don't buy a cheap new flywheel if you can resurface the old one. The reason the new one was so cheap is that it's probably from China or India. The OE one is likely much higher quality steel. India, China and Thailand are capable of making excellent steel products, but not at that price, and not through Checker Auto.
My experience with Chinese brake rotors has led me to believe that a similar flywheel will have the same problems: glazing, uneven heat distribution, hot-spots that can't be resurfaced, warping, cracking etc. Generally problematic over the long haul.
Wildturkee
08-18-2007, 02:03 PM
let me refrase that: I was going to have the fly wheel reserfaced, but they told me that there was not enough material left, so i called around and checkers was the only one that had a flywheel in stock, it was around $75 and so far before the engine craped out in it i have not had any problems with the fly wheel or clutch
spindleshanks
08-18-2007, 03:30 PM
I wasn't trying to step on your toes Turkee. What are the chances his flywheel is turnable anyway? Not likely. You've probably got the right idea, especially for Troy's old red (though incredibly capable) dinosaur.

Thanks Isaac - where do you get a pilot bearing puller? Sears? Napa/Autozone/Carquest? Remember how much? Is it one of those tools where you really get what you pay for and need to get a good one?
Rented it. it was like 12 bucks. Only realized i needed it the night before, asked when i went to pick up the tranny jack, and they had one. I had the pilot bearing in hand, and tested it, it fit.
As for getting a good one, i trust craftsman. If i were buying one, thats where i'd get mine.
Saturday, sunday, monday? One or all? Also, what is your usual start up time?
RedRunnertc
08-19-2007, 08:09 AM
I ordered a flywheel from Marlin with the clutch. When I replaced the starter I thought I saw some teeth missing/chewed up, so for $100 I figured it was worth it ... plus the flywheels need a step machined in them, and frankly, I don't trust anyone around here to know that and do it right.
I would like to start on Saturday probably, as I figure it's going to take more than 1 day. Start up time won't be very early - it's a holiday for god's sake!

Maybe I'm RWD by then, maybe not. If I'm rolling, I could bring the axle cradle and the uberstands (tho they are not adjustable), makes axle work much easier. If I'm not rolling, all that stuff is gonna be under my truck :p.

I would like to come give a hand, but I dont know if I will be able to drive by then (stupid head injury).
Autozone should have the pilot bearing puller, they charge like 20 bucks, but give you the money back once you bring them the tool back.

Plan is to start Saturday morning at 10:00!
Have several projects to do, so the more help the better:
- Remove tranny, replace clutch
- Install dual transfer case
- Disassemble rear axle, diagnose/repair rear locker
- Diagnose turn signal short
- Tune up (cap, rotor, plugs, wires)

I'm tempted to get my clutch done too, since you guys will have the tools for it, and the guidance I need... But the problem is that I don't have the parts yet, and I'm not sure if I can get them by the weekend. Also, I'm not quite sure what my weekend schedule is...
Where are you in "Boulder/Longmont"? I know the area relatively well...however, I know Longmont better than Boulder. I could at the very least watch a clutch replacement, and know a little better for when I do it.

i might swing by sunday or monday to hit you up on that trimming/smashing of the bumper/pinch welds.
I wont have the tires on, but i know from the end of my tire, to the end of the new ones, its 1.5" (they're 3" taller overall, the new ones that is), so maybe some measuring and cutting to be on the safe side before i got wheeling again and tear the shit out of the tires without trimming?
That is, if you're still down to help. I need to learn more about the mechanics behind my truck as well, so id like to watch and learn.

We're basically off CR7.5 near the interchange of 119 and I25. I'll PM directions.
AxleIke
08-30-2007, 08:54 AM
Troy, how are you with other folks working on your truck? By this I mean, were you to work on the tranny/xcase, i can easily pull your third and diagnose the leak. However, sometimes people are not cool with others messing with their stuff. Just curious is all, would make the work go much faster.
RedRunnertc
08-30-2007, 09:59 AM
I'm cool with it, especially if it's someone who knows what they're doing and I'm there...
I had kinda planned on having one "group" work on the rear axle, one on the transfer cases, and one on the other stuff. That should REALLY speed things up, and I don't think we'll be too on top of each other.
I've got a tranny jack. Still need to pick up the pilot bearing puller and a few other things. I'll be pulling the truck into the garage Friday night, getting it on jackstands, and draining the fluids, so everything will be ready to go when people arrive.
Isaac - what measuring devices do I need to check the backlash, etc on the rear diff? Just a mag base dial indicator?
AxleIke
08-30-2007, 02:02 PM
yes, that is it. Backlash should be between .007" and .012". I put both of my diffs at .009". Enough that the gears won't get too hot, and can be plenty lubed, but close enough that deflection won't be a problem.
However, I refer you to Zuk's site: www.gearinstalls.com
It is an invaluable resource.
I am attempting to dig up my tool for adjusting the adjustment nuts on the diff. Thought i had it in one tool box, now i have to go search through the rest.
I will also bring my bench testing tool.

UPDATE:
Rear diff is fixed - Thanks AxleIke!
Tuneup is done - Thanks Widturkee!
Transmission is out - Thanks AxleIke and March2304!
So tomorrow, we'll be working on assembling the transmission/transfer cases, fitting it in the truck and doing the necessary cutting... and diagnosing the turn signals, adjusting the rear brakes, and all the other little stuff.
Monday, if anyone's available, it looks like we'll be installing the clutch and putting everything back together.

So, basically, it took, let's see, about ... well ... ALL DAY to get the freaking pilot bearing out. Basically ground almost all the way through it then popped it out with that big prybar.
Got the new one put in and the flywheel on.
Had a buddy come over and weld a lever onto the rear diff fill bolt and got that off and the diff filled.
SOOOO, kinda an unproductive day, but if people can come over tomorrow, everything is ready to finish up!

howd everything go? Everything in and ready?
RedRunnertc
09-06-2007, 03:23 PM
No
Transmission is in and everything hooked back up. Got the transfer case into place and cut the shifter hole for it last night. Will be going to the M&G tonight, so no work on it.
Should have driveshafts and transfer case mounts tomorrow, so will be bolting everything up and fine tuning this weekend. Should definitely have it done by Monday!
Meaning IT IS AWN for Moody Hill next weekend!
RedRunnertc
09-11-2007, 07:57 AM
Update:
Mounts came yesterday and I got the crossmember installed and the wiring straightened out. Shortly thereafter, everything went to shit.
Rear driveshaft is all in the rear heater hoses.
Front driveshaft flange pattern is different, can't get to bolt up, and appears to be hitting the tcase.
Sooooo .... tonight it looks like I'll be taking it all down so I can fix the DS issues, and then put it all back in.
I've got to get this thing on the road so I can start breaking in the clutch!
