I'm thinking about buying a 85 or older pickup to wheel and for my dad to take hunting. I don't know much about these trucks, but as far as i know they have a SA front and 22r engines. If i were to buy one what kind of mileage on the engine should i be looking for? Also, i want to lift it to fit 33-35" tires, with mostly shackles and leafs. What else needs to be motified when lifting these trucks? I was also thinking about maybe a 2-3" bodylift? I found one close to my house with a 4"lift, ps, and 33" tires, 200,000 on the stock engine asking $2,500 for it, is that reasonable?
You can get the 22RE (fuel injection) on the '85's. What year is the one you mentioned? The 22R and the 22RE do last forever, but I think you could talk the guy down a bit.

I had an 85 ext. cab, 4x4, efi, 4" lift, stock gears, and 32's, it was a great little truck!!! I got around 20-22 miles per gallon, sold it for $2800 about a year and a half ago, with 240,000 on it, no lift, and quite abit of rust in the bed (of course). The steering design has issues when lifted and run with larger tires, but can be remedied easily with your check book. If you run bigger than 32" tires you will want to regear to 4:56 or 4:88.
I would try to talk him down abit (always)......but doesn't sound like that bad of a deal!

From what I have read stock steering will limit your down travel. Hy-steer will help you max out your suspension travel. Check with Marlin, Skys manufacturing, and All Pro. I have Hy-steer but I didn't wheel my 85' Runner with stock suspension so I can't compare the two.
Here is a good article for you to ready about buying older Toyotas.

For comparison I just bought an 85 22r with 84,000 miles, with some rust, state inspected, runs and drives fine, completly stock with a very small oil leak for $1500.00 he was asking 1900. Try and talk him down. Expect most that you find to have 175k to 200k miles.

The price sounds good. be sure to listen for any knocks coming from the motor. that usually means a bad rod bearing. thats about the only thing that goes wrong with the 22r/22re. buying my '85 22RE XTRAcab was a great idea for me. I love wheelin with it and working on it....here is the before after pics.

as far as lifting, check out these links. cheap mods that give you tons of flex.
