Just moved to Indy....Need some Metal....

Now I am going to look like a noob on this question, but oh well!

Before I moved, I knew all the local places to shop for whatever I needed. But since moving, I am having to rebuild all my "vendors".

For metal, back home we had yards that you could order fresh new tubing or whatnot that also carried "drop", "overrun" or surplus metal.

I have found only one such place locally and they do not have a much of a selection.

What should I be searching for in the phone books? I have used steel, steel yards. even sheet metal and metal. But have not found much. Any other ideas of what key words to use?

from what I found this weekend, "scrap yard" means aluminum can recyling center. I might not have found all of the scrap yards yet but I will keep that term in mind, just kinda getting discouraged, I hate how all the metal prices have stayed so high lately.

Have you checked with any fab/metal working shops around town and see what they suggest? Maybe a muffler shop might have some info? In the phonebook, you can also try steel/metal stamping, manufacturing, industrial, fabricating, distributor, warehouse, sales, recycling...

The SBC yellow pages here in Los Angeles uses the catagory "Metals" for all metal suppliers. They also have a precious metals, but thats the bling bling stuff that only Dick Foster calls up. Each phone book company does things differently, but I could figure the listing to be somewhere in the "metals" section. Also remember that the yellow pages is a paid service. I would suspect that not all businesses of that type would list in the yellow pages. Brians suggestion of getting recommendations from other businesses would be a good reference.

That's the way it was back home also, but I guess this is not as big of a metropolis as L.A or S.A. Hell they don't even use more than two letters for the states abbrevaition. :lmao:

You are right about the paid service bit, I remember how expensive it was when I listed my business in the yellows back in the day. With all the "hillbilly's in the area, I am sure if all of them listed their businesses, our "book" would be much thicker than it is. I understand though that not all businesses have advertising budgets. I know of three junk yards around my suburb, that are not listed, so I am sure that is a viable explanation of why I am not finding more.

The one place I did find for drop metal is actually an hours drive from me and is a fab shop. But they do not always have the 4130 nor the other types tube I need currently.

Bear Ya might try calling a couple of the automotive junk yards and find out where the take there crushed cars. If this has done been sudgested sorry it's been one of those 16 hour days at work.

Hey!! thanks for the suggestion, everything so far has been very helpful and that is a great idea. We have plenty of junk yards, just not scrap yards…go figure?

I am getting geared up for my 16+ hour work days, so I know how you feel…now go get some rest! And one or more of these! :xbeer3:
