I have a 2000 Taco with the 3.4 V6 and 5 speed trans. When doing the SAS i am thinking of running a pass side drop rather than a drivers drop axel and swaping out my chain driven case for an older gear driven case. I know marlin (and maybe advanced adapters too) sells an adapter that bolts up to the 2000 taco 5 speed and allows you to then bolt up an older gear driven case to that. I am wanting this because i can run 4.7 gears in that case and also because the gear drive is much stronger than the chain drive.

Now, with saying that, my question is how common is this. If not very, why? Is there any down falls to doing this. I have done some reasearch on this and i thank any advice in advance, but what is some of your inputs.

Thanks again

you would probably need to reroute the exhaust extensively. The headers meet up on the right hand side.

Many, many swapped Tacos running their stocks cases including several supercharged 3.4L. Strength isn't something I worry about but a different gear would be good. Inchworm's Lefty has different gears available without relocating stuff as mentioned above.
