Hey all. Is there any way to check if my 4wd is really working???? I went out today mudding and doing some climbing but in 4lo or 4hi it doesnt seem that my front wheels are ...how can i say working???? I mean that it feels as if my rears are doing all the work pushing and my fronts arent pulling.... How can i check if every thing in the ifs is working correctly??? Btw i have automatic hubs and dont have to lock them in the front wheels???? I have an 85 truck with manuals would it be better to switch from auto to manual???

A good test is to remove the rear d-shaft and see if you can drive it in 4wd. Just a quick around the yard test is all that's needed.

As for your hubs question, sounds like you're wanting to put solid axle hubs on your IFS truck. I'm pretty sure they won't work, but you can find hubs from another IFS that had the manual ones, and that should work.

Put the truck on jack stands then with the truck in 4wd when you turn one wheel the others should turn as well(in a open diff, one tire may turn backwards of the corresponding tire). That is the way I have diagnosed where noises in my drivetrain were coming from before. I haven't ever delt with auto hubs and I would probably swap them out for that reason. :2cents:

If you have auto hubs, the 4wd probably isnt working.... they have a tendency to work when not needed and not work when needed.... as Glen said, get rid of them.

Converting is no big deal.....

Yea thanks for the info. I havent even thought of disconnecting the rear driveshaft. I could have done that saturday when i had it off re doing my third seal...(leaking).... So 85 and older are solid axles and 86 and up are ifs??? The parts truck i have is ifs I always thought it was an 85.... Has all the sr5 trim package, inclinometer tach etc etc.... i took the top and chopped it right behind the sliding windows tho for a half top it was missing the right rear window anyways...

yup, 85 and older are SA, 86 and newer are IFS for american and canadian vehicles. other regions of the world differed, and odds are pretty low to come across a truck from one of these other regions.

Ok long time since i posted on this thread but i finally took my driveshaft off to fix my leaking pinion seal.... Put her in 4wd and tried to do a little test as mentioned and failed to move..... the front driveshaft spins and the right wheel cv shaft spins but no go..... What do i do now??? Its supposed to be auto locking hubs but apparently they dont lock..... I guess this explains why the rear is pushing more than the front is working.... not at all.... i have a set of asin manuals on another truck how hard is it to swap them out??? Any good suggestions on how to get that first c-clip off??? Its been a PITA so far and i havent gotten it off i need another hand and my ol lady is at work.... I wanna get it fixed by this weekend so any help is appreciated.... thx in advance...... sorry for the run on paragraph lol

Andrew you can get that c clip off with a couple flat screw drivers but its really tricky

i havent seen a auto hub in a long time but i think you remove the cone washers and all the same as the manual hub

once the c clip is off remove the 12mm nuts and cone washers, then it just slides off

for the life of me i cant seem to get the hub off.... I take all the 12mm nuts and the bolt inside the hub with all the c clips off and that copper gear on the outside and i still cant get that damn thing off....even with a hammer beating the snot outa it. Its almost like the thing is welded to the rotor or something??? I added a pic of what ive gotten taken off. Well whats missing is what ive taken off lol..... So whats next??? If i leave that copper gear out the internals. The hub will slide out and lock.... but if i put everything back inside it wont lock??? Im sure that if i left out the copper gear im gonna break something.... When i left the gear out it locked and i put it in 4lo started it up with the truck on jackstands and the front right would turn. But when i stopped it the front left would turn.... I dunno what to do..... Im gonna go take apart the asin ifs manuals i have on the other truck tomorrow.... Will i have everything i need for swap???

Hit the locking hub where it bolts to the wheel hub (right next to the studs), or do ya already have the cone washers removed?

Edit... OK when I enlarge the pic I think I can tell that You have the cone washers removed. Having never removed auto hubs I won't be of much help, but I have some questions. Did you remove the c clip from the verry outside end of the birfield? Is there a c clip at the very outside edge of the hub body?

yea i have removed all c clips that i can see there is one holding on the outside the bearing ring is what its called (copper gear) i guess that im gonna go beat the snot outa it tomorrow again....

Well shoot..... my hopes and dreams of getting out of this swap without spending any money went out the window. I see what u all mean abut the little cone washers. U have to take a punch to open them up and beat on the housing to get it off. Got that figured out when i took the manuals off my other truck. Somebody has been inside the manuals in my parts truck cuz one side has much more parts inside it than the other so i dont know what i had. Where in the heck do u get a 54mm socket at??? I went to 2 orileys a Napa, autozone and the local atwoods looking for one and the closest i got was 2 inches and that was still 1/8 too small so i got it and was gonna use my grinder to make it work. Then i went to autozone and ordered a manual hub conversion kit for 46 bucks a side..... Thats just for the conversion kit the hub kit was another 150 but since i have the asins i dont need them. I only got one spindle nut off using a punch in the little holes of it but the other side is stuck really bad and i gave up. But since im gettin the conv kit i dont need them anyways.... At least i learned how to get those cone washers off... lol... Now when i get the kit wednesday i can see whats inside my autos that makes them tick.... Maybe i can do a writeup of how to convert auto to manual for all to read..... For the others of us to learn from.... I looked all last night but couldnt find a good resource on how to do this all.... I did find a site where you can download year specific toyota repair manuals to adobe acrobat.... http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/index.html

Sorry for the long post and wasting more time....:D

hit the hub next to the cone washer with a hammer and they will shoot off, i always leave the nut on but at the end of the stud so they dont hit me in the eye

Got er all fixed up now. And man is there a big difference in how hard it pulls now. I firmly believe that since i have owned the truck the front hubs have never locked in. I bought 2 mile marker kits at autozone because the guy said i'dd need 2, one for each wheel. Picked them up and lo and behold one kit has both wheels so here i sit with an extra conversion kit. I think i may take it back and tell them i want my money back and im not paying for the restocking charges. Its crap like this i dont ever shop at autozone. I dont shop there unless i absolutely have to and in this case i did. Orileys and napa couldnt help me out and my only other option was the net but i didnt want to wait. I wanna go out n play this weekend!!!!!:xozzy:
