View Full Version : Rear Diff breather mod, improved

I followed this write up http://www.yotatech.com/~corey/tech/jackson_breather/breather.htm and added a little impovement. I removed the plastic piece that surrounds the filler neck (black thing in the pic) and drilled a 3/8" hole in it near the filler neck, pushed the breather plug through it and pushed the hose onto it and hoseclamped it in place. Screwed it back in, and viola, a TOTALLY protected breather plug.

Will the fumes from the gas up affect this mount in anyway? I snaked mine up under the wheel well between the metal and the plastic? cover under the wheel well.

That's where the article tells you they placed the breather, in the filler area. I'm just getting my 1 post/month, not picking on you.
I just did this mod as well since the last few times I've been offroad I travesed some deep water. The first time was at Lake Powell launching the SeaDoo's. Damn near had my bed in the water. The last two times was Charalou Gap here near Tucson. I ran the hose to my engine compartment and put a Fram fuel filter on the end for a true open breather. Others on here have suggested the same thing.
Seems kinda odd 2 people from the desert doing this mod. We should be doing catcus needle tire mods or something.

Thats what i did with mine the only problem was the lock hit it. It didnt work anyways so i bought a spring and im going to smooth out the hole.

I'm not from here, and I'm headed to Seattle in 7 weeks. ;)
And that article did put in near the filler, mine is just a cleaner excecution of it.
And I was careful to chose a location that it wouldn't hit, and my truck doesn't have the locking fuel door (which is see as a double edged sword).

Exactly what I did a few months back. I took it one step further and secure the breather in place, to the black plastic trim, with a little dab of JB Weld. Hopefully it'll never ever rattle. :)

Parts/Materials Needed:
1 Toyota part number 90404-51026 Listed as a "Union" at a cost of $4.19 in January of 2002.
8 feet of 1/4" rubber fuel line
2 small hose clamps
A few nylon wire (zip) ties

Ok... so I just got the parts for this. I ordered the breather plug and union fitting from the stealership... then swung by Checker and got 6ft of fuel line and some hose clamps. The only 1/4 inch line they had was some high pressure line, or so they said. It's pretty thick. And it was a little more money then the standard stuff (I paid 14$ for 6ft.) I was too lazy to go somewhere else, so I just bought it. If it really is high pressure line, and is thicker then regular line, it won't make a difference, will it?

No difference. The thicker stuff just made it harder for me to route. It was all wound up and hard to keep unwound.

FYI - I just bought the "Union Fitting" yesterday from my local Toyota Dealership (90404-51026) and the total cost was $7.60 (w/ CA sales tax).
The mod took me about 15 minutes. I ran it in to my gas door like in Anestech*s pic above.

no doofus...the union for the breather extension, sheesh.
I recall reading about a even better solution. it was a little plastic piece that worked like an accordian, when the air in the diff gets hot and expands the thingy expands. the best part is no water can get in no matter how deep you go (In theory). the only draw back i could see would be when draining the diff suction might be a problem. but this shouldn't ever happen, always remove the fill plug FIRST just in case it decides to strip. i learned my lesson the hard way.

i have seen it to, it is in 4wheeldrive mag. but i couldn't find the artical right off the bat. it's a neat idea, it's just a black accordian thing that sits on the breather hole. it's supposidly completly sealed so no dust even gets in. i have thought about it but it hard to find it and i got to thinking that going through deep mud or water would have enough resistance to pull it off because i really just claps on top and sits on the axle and expands up and down with the pressure/heat.

01-30-2006, 03:25 AM
So explain to me how this magical device works, it seems like it does the same thing the original breather did, when there is pressure and heat that needs to be released, it opens, how does water not get in at this point if you are sitting in a puddle?

Intrepid,
it doesn't open at all... the best i can explain it is like a ballon inflating with the pressure and contracting when it cools. it's fully sealed all the time. just let the gasses expand and contract.

Whats the deal with people saying they used a fuel filter in place of the breather when they extended it?
Bump, I'm not quite grasping the role of a fuel filter here, either. Looks cool, I'm sure, but it doesn't seem like that air would really need to be filtered. What am I missing?
Maxwell
02-08-2006, 11:49 AM
Ok, so I found this explanation on the WATTORA site:
http://www.wattora.com/mods/diffbreather/
In short, it just allows more flow than the stock breather so the pressure in the diff remains neutral. But why not just leave the end of the hose open? Especially if it's clear up under the hood? Does a fuel filter (something that is built to allow fuel to pass through) really keep any water out?
RedRunnertc
02-08-2006, 01:06 PM
I think the idea is to catch the oil vapor coming OUT of the diff, and I guess eliminate the possibility of anything getting in and contaminating your oil.
I'm with you though - after going through 6' of small tubing, isn't most of the oil vapor going to be condensed on the wall of the tube? And won't anything that gets "sucked" down there get trapped in said oil?

k ran mine to the engine bay and mounted it right beside the front diff one. then i looked at the completed job and remembered gettin my friends pathfinder stuck off camber in a deeeep mud hole with a lot of water, drivers side fender partly submerged. hmmmmm................. went to parts place to get 2 unions and more hose to extend them both a bit more and just my luck only 1 1/4 " fitting left. ill take pics when i get em relocated further up the inner fender.
by the way where do the transf case and trans? vent to? should we be extending those too?

front differential, transfer case and manual trans also, if you plan deep fording (with a snorkel of course).
Front and rear differentials are most common as they see the most submersion.

the front diff breather is already raised up into the engine compt.
the tranny and tcase breathers (manual) are located on top of the tranny and if you get stuck that deep (when moving its not so much of a problem) you'll be getting water into your electronics anyway and have much worse problems than a little water in the gearbox ;)

This is what I play in most of the time cause im in FL Lots of water

I just checked the EPC, and all the part #s that have been thrown out are for vacuum ports in intakes. Seems like just about any one of them from just aboot any motor/vehicle should work. I didnt come across any that look to be 90°, but the EPC isnt always that specific as far as the diagrams go.
Incidentally, someone threw out the number 90404-51319, which everyone already has on their Taco. ;)
It is the vacuum port fitting on the intake, where the vac line for the brake booster comes out. :)
The Tacos list two numbers: -51319 and -51273.
I would just try next time yer at the junkyard, check over any Toyota motor, and look for the fittings on the intakes for the power steering and brake booster lines.
Oh, some of these numbers were used on carbed motors back in the 70's and 80's as well as the newer EFI motors.
They were used on the 79-80 20R's, as well as the 22R and RE's, and even the F/2f in the FJ40's & 55's, as well as all the Celicas, some Camry's, the RAV4, the FJ80's, Lexus ES300...A whole bunch of stuff through the years.
Screw paying $7-$11 for one. :)

Oh yeah, if anyone can post a positive number for a 90° fitting, i can check it to see what applications (vehicles) it was used on.
Also, if anyone wants to check any Toyota motors they have for any large 90° vacuum fittings, I could reverse check that too, to get part numbers.
I want to do my diffs as well as tranny & tcase, and I'm thinking the 90°s would be better for the tranny and tcase. Maybe even use them on the axles, to run the hoses along the housing and zip tie them to run up along the brake hoses for a cleaner install.

To tell you the truth, I didn't have to order anything... I just went to the harware store and bought a 5/16" barbed to 1/8" pipe threaded brass fitting and ran a die backwards on it so it would screw into the diff. Ran 5/16" fuel hose to behing the gas filler and used another 5/16" to 1/8" fitting with a 1/8" coupler to the factory breather. No stretching needed. Pipe thread was extensively used in these connections.
$5 if that...

yup, pretty much any hose will work with at least a 1/8-3/16" ID.
that thread count/pitch holds for Toyota diffs in general and other Japanese diffs as well.

Are you guys actually drilling a hole through the plastic piece around the gas cap and poking it through? I just removed that little plastic piece and zip tied it to one of the fuel lines directly behind that plastic piece. Is that a problem?
I also didn't run a fuel filter in line with the hose, but i've seen that done on a few write-ups, what's the word on that?
And it took about 15 minutes, local Toyota got the part for me in 2 days for like $7 or so.

I just zip tied mine in line with the filler tube. I also only used 3.5-4' of tube. Left a nice curve in it coming off the diff for flex and then ran it up into the gas cap area, no way you needed 6' to accomplish that.

I bought more, just because I wanted to do two diffs (SFA 4 Runner), and run the breathers all the way up into the engine compartment. Now, I'd have to be over the top of the hood to get water sucked into the diffs. And at that depth, the least of my worries would be getting water down the breathers!

i got the union fitting from the local stealership and it was 5 bucks.
i ran my hose along the bottom of the bed and into the cab into my under seat storage in the ext.cab tacos. i also put a lil air filter thing on it to make it a open breather.i love it!!!

I just poped the cap off the breather then put 1/4 hose with a clamp...Didnt buy anything other than the hose and clamps...I did both front and rear this way...I have the rear running up inside my runner and the front was run to the inside of the cab..I found if you leave them any were else and you go through deep water it will still suck water up in them (not much but some)...When I got my snorkel is when I moved them inside...Money spent less than 4 bucks :D
This is what I play in most of the time cause im in FL Lots of water
an this was me coming out...Water was up on the windows

Man it looks like you wouldn't be #1 on the food chain if you swamped that thing and had to crawl out where you wheel!

Like others, I didn't bother drilling the hole. I just removed the plastic cover and ziptied it to the bed bracket behind on the right.

My opinion is that it looks better without it there. And you don't have people knocking their knuckles on it and asking, "what's that." I could hear a smog technician asking that...
