View Full Version : Spill Kits

I think that having a po kit as well as a spill kit is about to become a requirement on the Rubicon. Maybe not the mudding folks but for people doing any kind of wheeling involving rocks, cracking open an oil pan, radiator, diff or gear box is a real possibility. Steering pumps have a way of boiling over too. After adding some good recovery gear to your rig, we need to be prepared for this sort of thing too. I just got finished hammering out a big ole dent in my gas tank skid. I think it's a good idea to either buy or put together a spill kit to keep the mess off of the trails. A friend of mine makes and sells kits here if you don't know what to put in one or don't want to shop of all of the bits and pieces to make your own kit. http://www.bluedevilproducts.com/Home%20Page/Home%20Page,%20L1%20Frameset.htm (http://www.bluedevilproducts.com/Home%20Page/Home%20Page,%20L1%20Frameset.htm). 5% of the sale goes to the Blue Ribbon Coalition and $30 is not much of a financial burden to shoulder in order to be more responsible.
I got one and put in the back of the truck this morning, I think all of us need to do something along these lines.

good stuff ... thanks for the heads up

Hey Dick, that's a great idea. I keep some oil absorbing pads behind my seat, but that kit's got everything in the same place.
I think it will be sooner than later that we will be required to have something like that on the Rubicon.
Later,

I think they are talking about it now along with Po kits and permits. Of course, Dale Albright would be the one to know the most about it. It's not a bad idea to have one in any case.

Why would I get in touch with this Cecil guy? I just got finished saying I had a kit already.
If you have anything useful to add then add it, but your post was well what can I say other than LAME.
Does he have a kit? If so what is the price, what is in the kit? Does he have a link of some sort? Do you have a spill kit?
Don't just post for the sake of posting, try to add something to the conversation. If not please just click, don't type.

'nother option-
As mandated by SCCA rules- all vehicles must carry an approved kit.
http://www.rallylights.com/Rally/Spill_Kit.asp
I've been carring this kit in the '87 crawler for 2 years now. Relatively compact, yet very complete.

better start with his website..lots of grammar mistakes and none of the links are working
unless i have to be USING IE to view his page...
honestly.i like the price a whole lot better....
its about cheap and efficient for me right now, i cant afford to pay a billion bucks for something i can piece together for about 15 bucks at the local hardware store....
like first aid kits..make your own if you know what to stock up on. if you dont know what you need, then pay retail

A spill kit is an easy, cheap item to carry for the average wheeler. I've used a pig pad for a Jeeper who rolled a pointed rock up into his oil pan. We scooped up the sand that was soaked prior to getting the pad under the rig, and disposed of it later. 5 quarts of oil makes a heck of a mess...
I also have added long extended breathers to my axles and tranny w/ a long loop to act as a simple trap to help keep the oil from spilling in the case of deep water or the very (x-ing fingers) rare flop...
If you KNOW you're going to flop or roll on a regular basis, please make your rig spill resistant. Route your axle, tranny, engine breathers into catch cans. Use a fuel cell w/ roll over valve instead of a standard tank.

meaningless my ass...
I'm personally becoming very disenchanted w/ the current state of the sport. I'm seeing more and more of the stuff mentioned by Bill Burke, Del Albright, and Brad Ulrich evey time I head south. We're in serious danger of loosing the trails off Table Mesa Rd. in AZ due to oil spills. Unprepared wheelers have caused a lot of damage w/ spilled fluids. We cleaned up Annihilator to avoid possible closer, and found oil down almost 4' in spots. That's bullcrap.
The popularity of Rock Crawling is killing the recreational aspects of of the sport. The opportunity of being able to wheel on public land is going the way of the dinosour.
Believe it.

spill kit:
5 gallon paint bucket w/ lid....
-small shovel...
- plastic trash bags...
-kitty litter...
-rags
- fuel tank repair kit -
some sort of metal mesh to reinforce( if needed) either product below
http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/caulks-sealants/40754.htm
http://www.midwayautosupply.com/detailedproductdescription.asp?900
-BIOZOME microbes for any residual left- http://www.obio.com/The%20Oppenheimer%20Formula.htm
- gloves  :o
- :xmoon: For kicks you could scatter widely some " native wildflower", native grass seed suited to the particular area of the country you're located. Next time you wheel you're "picnic/camp spot" might be looking pretty  :D

This is a great post. I have heard the although hard to enforce, trail cleanup kits, poo kits, and other things are going to be required for wheeling. When they issue the fire permit they ask to see a shovel, why dont they do the same with wheeling permits, it would give the FS some money and help to educate those who are not very trail savvy.
Thanks for all the good info. keep it coming!

I've heard that the plan is to issue permits much like fire permits. Then if they happen to check you out on the trail somewhere and you don't have the goods, you get a ticket and fine.

Yeah I know his site if a fucking mess. Just click on standard products then on trail pails but he has no kits that include a bucket despite the name. They take up much less room than a 5 gal bucket would.

Do you have to have a copy of Al Gore's "Earth in the Balance" in your posession with your permit to use a motor vehicle on public land when you're wheeling in California?
Just out of curiosity what do all of these permits cost and what are the fines for not having them.

LOL I wouldn't doubt the fuckers would do that so don't give them any ideas. So far everthing is still free and they haven't demanded permits yet. Just fire permits from the FS that are free but if anyone in the group has one you're good to go.
If you check real close I think you'll find that in all National Forest you're supposed to have and axe, shovel and a bucket of some sort in your vehicle.
In AZ they do charge an annual fee for every person not just each vehicle. The pricks even make you get it in person or via snail mail.

Just like the fuckers in the Union of Soviet Socialist Neu Jersey - you need to buy a beach tag to go out on the "public" beaches in most cities. They threw some 14 year old foreign visitors in jail a few years ago for not having theirs...
You're right about the NF regulations, forgot since I haven't been in Allegany here for a while. Here in our state there is always some asshat that doesn't put his fire out after hunting and drinking...

I WISH they would require and enforce some shit at telico along these lines... Also people not using tree straps really piss me off, A SIX FOOT TREE STRAP IS 15 BUCKS YOU DAMN REDNECKS... And some of the trucks I see up there should be turned around at the entrance, Ford explorer (or used to be anyway) emptied his entire gas tank sitting on a slope at gaurdrail. That had to be a problem he knew about when he fucking got there.

You damn rednecks didn't you listen in Sunday Bible School - God put that there tree right THERE for EVERYBODY to use winchin and you're gonna be greedy and kill it.
What if YOU needed that there tree to get unstuck and some greedy SOB killed it because they didn't use their tree strap.

see your an educated redneck, theres a difference. But really though, you can tell there used to be some beautiful trees around some of the trails and now the ones scarred from winching are all dead... Not to mention, if people keep treating these places like a dump, its gonna ruin it for all of us.

I just threw a bunch of stuff into a small tote and strap it on the back of my jeep. I have already used it 3 times on just one run through the Rubicon. The tote can come in handy if you need to re-use the fluid that is leaking out. total cost including the plastic tote was only about $15
