View Full Version : Cylinder Misfire

So here's the deal. I have 85k miles on the 3.4L. It started sputtering pretty bad, figured it was the spark plugs. Before I could actually get around to changing them the Check Engine Light came on. Figured it was probably caused by the bad plugs. Changed the plugs yesterday, no more sputtering, but CEL still on. Took it over to Vato Zone and their computer says its cylinder 4 misfiring.
What all could cause a misfire? Also, how are the cylinders orientated (which would be 4)?

If the plugs fixed it and it runs smooth now, the light probably just hasn't cleared yet. Pulling the EFI fuse for a few minutes will fix that. If it stays off and no more misfire, then you're ok.
Another culprit if the problem continues could be the coil pack or wire from the coil pack to the plug.
#4 is the middle cylinder on the drivers side. How did the plugs look when you removed them, #4 in particular?

They all looked pretty much the same, some "burn" marks and as far as the actual tips go, I'm not sure how bad they looked cause I don't know what they are supposed to look like. :p
I removed the EFI fuse for 30 minutes, light still on. Is there any truth in the whole you have to start the car x number of times or drive so many miles before the light goes out?

If it is still on, maybe you didn't get the right fuse. It should be off initially even if the problem still exists. I'm not sure which of the 2 it is when i've needed to reset it, so I usually pull both the EFI and OBD fuses. Come to think of it, it makes more sense that it is the OBD fuse. 5 minutes is plenty. Letting the car go through XX # of drive cycles is how the car resets the light if you don't pull the fuse first. I'm not that patient.

Your other option to pulling the fuse is to just remove the negative terminal on the battery - that will clear the code if it has been fixed, if not, it will just come back up even if you clear it with a scanner.
If it's still misfiring, check the wire from the cold pack to the plug as Tristan suggested - those things run very very close to the engine and you might have burned #4 just enough to cause a misfire.

I also have a scanner that I have at my house in south phx and I think I have a coil pack that we can switch out and see it is does anything.

Right on. I had to bounce out of town this morning. I'll mess with it some more when I get back.
Thanks for all the help.
You went to Autozone to get the code read. They can also clear it.

I didn't even notice there were two different EFI fuses. I pulled the smaller, 20 amp one and that did the trick. Thanks for all the help.
