View Full Version : House Of Wrenching - Open This Weekend Oct 27th & 28th

Ok guys., Lets do some more wrenching. (Assuming the weather will hold) The reality is that one of the days troy and I do have to work on house stuff, but the garage is free for anyone who needs to use it.
If we were to try and pick one day which day would be better? Sat the 27th or Sun the 28th?
We will try and get troy's rear diff back in assuming we have all the parts by then.
Who else has a one day job they need help with?
Plus I'm gonna carve a punkin'!

Hey Mols, I need to replace my brakes and rotors all around (I think) and would like to overhaul the 4x assembly on the fronts while everything is taken apart. I have never done it before on a 4R and would need some coaching - I can turn a wrench but am no mechanic. This a one-day job or somethign a little longer timeframe? I would bring up a BIG pumpkin and some beers....

Can you fit a dana 70 in the back of a 4runner???
Sorry big pumpkin joke.

Sunday, assuming we aren't neck deep in new house stuff!
I did the brakes and rotors on my wife's Saab in about 4 hours by myself, so I can only imagine Toyota would be easier.
My to-do list right now:
1. Removing and hammering the damn belly plate so I don't have to listen to the exhaust cross-over pipe rattling against it at idle  That and figure out a way to keep it from doing it again in the future.
2. Relocate the air tank underneath the ass-end to keep the tailpipe from rattling against it (do you see a theme here... ) Might also relocate the compressor in the engine compartment, but other engine mods will determine that (shut up March!)
3. Replace a cross-threaded bolt on the front skid plate.
4. Re-invent the mounting for the front edge of the bumper skid plate.
5. Try to come up with a quick-disconnect for the front sway bar (the passenger link bent again in Moab...) or just take the sway bar out and learn to live with(out) it.
6. Mock-up exo for front and rear quarters.
7. Need to change the oil/filter, clean/swap out the air filter, cabin filter.
All in a days work, right :)

i might be able to make it sunday afternoon. i think i'll be in estes this weekend staying with some friends at their cabin. no work to do on the truck, i cant even drive it, but shelbs and i might come up and carve pumpkins.

So...I was thinking that a pumpkin could be carved very, very quickly with a sawzall, air saw, angle grinder, corded uber drill and some hole saws, and other handy household tools of the common 'wheeler.
Ace Hardware has CHEAP! pumpkins right now, decent sizes...this is the one in Lafayette BTW.
Other than the rear brakes, which I must address at my place, I need to sort out a compressor problem and drop the front diff. Again, all possible at my place, but I'd be interested in coming up just to carve some pumpkins with garage tools :p. I have a body saw but no air btw.
Week and a half til I order LT :D.

BTW I now have a 20 gallon air tank...has a couple pin holes in the bottom but will pressure up to 90# fast...mabee if there is any one who welds that can bring the welder they can fix it, please?...also have a 15 gallon compressure that is slow...little pump but dont leak and works. I also have plenty of air tools. if there is a welder going to be there Sunday pencil me in for welded spiders in the rear. Thats all Folks, back to your normal life now.

So looks like we are leaning towards a sunday H.O.W. day which is good because we need saturday to get troy's rig outta the way... LOL Let me see if we can secure the welder.
Oh and I saw those pumpkins. $5 for big ones!

And... thanks to VWfast60... we now have a total of 10 (count em) 10 jackstands... so we could in theory get a bunch done. Still need to check with troy about a welder...

I haven't ever done rear drums/shoes, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

Molly if you're able to drop of the hammer drill, you can also check out the welder. Looks like we can make it Sunday, whether my brakes are sorted or not, so I can bring the Drill Dr, a 220V welder and 20# CO2 bottle, and the siping tool if you don't pick it up earlier.
Also got an uber drill, super sawzall, extra barebones lid, couple pairs of welding gloves and some other stuff. Maybe Sunday would be a good time to start on my ebrake mounts.

Except my front diff takes that special dial indicator....Does anybody have one? Can somebody get me a part # for that dial indicator? It's for the clamshell style front diff on Tacomas... Maybe I will buy one, and donate it to HOW, if somebody can do it? Who are your gear guys for this weekend, anyway?

jeremy and i had yours apart on that one side in less then 20 minutes, its not that hard from there... usually the hardest part is getting the damn drum off, and then getting everything adjusted.
Rear shouldnt be more then an hour and half, two hours.
I'm down to come help out sunday if im not hung over lol
Kyle, we can meet up and you can follow me up if you want?
As long as you're not planning on going at the ass-crack of dawn (aka before 9 lol)

Has anyone here replaced a clutch before? timing belt?
Lysmachia
10-25-2007, 01:31 AM
Yes on the clutch. Pulling the pilot bearing is a BITCH. The bearing puller breaks all the time. Might need to bone up on the "newspaper method!"
BTW looks like the HOW will be open both days.... I'd love to have a pumpkin carving night of it saturday...
So for those of you that come. bring tools, and bring beer.. and maybe a munchie to share. ;)
No wrenching starts before 10:00 though... I need my beauty rest. LOL

RedRunnertc

Has anyone here replaced a clutch before? timing belt?
Yes to both, these jobs are kinda time consuming - might want to set up a specific appointment at the HOW for them. Clutch can be done in a day if everything goes well. Timing belt is 2-4 hrs IIRC - been a while since I did mine.
Clutch shouldn't be too bad on yours since it's "only" a 2001. As a matter of fact, it shouldn't be worn out yet, but if it is, it is.
A guy I work with has a tranny jack - makes it a lot easier and safer.

I have a crapload to do but it mostly depend on the monay situation. (quiet Eric) Need to:
Put in my rear locker.
Mount rear Firestick,
Install new rock lights.
MOST importantly measure and do mock up for exo.
Install front and rear bumpers.
Mount compressor and CO2 tank

Does anybody need a brand new steel winchline? It came stock with my Warn and I'll sell it cheap. I'll bring it along Sunday. I also have a pair of ventvisors for the front windows of a Tacoma and one of the two pieces that cover the ext cab windows.

Exo planning will be anothe H.O.W day because I need to do it, too. We'll do it in november befroe we organize our steel buy with Hawk.
We will NOT have the tranny jack this weekend, so any clutch work... well either get a tranny jack or you'll have to wait.
Looks like we will have a welder at some point.
Troy's rig is gonna be in the damned garage the whole time. His parts do not come in till Monday. *GRRR* But we have the driveway and other bay... so we should be fine.

Hmm. That could work out fine. I don't need too much assistance. Just an extra set of hands when pulling and replacing the front diff. That and a floor jack. Crossing my fingers this will take only a couple hours. If I have time, I'll also rebuild my hubs. Looks like good weather, so I can almost surely do this on the street. Driveway won't work as it's too steep.

Sounds like you all have a party going tomorrow. Hey, I was wondering if anyone could help me out on this. I need to relocate my shocks because they are too long and are hitting the springs. http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc43/zeke10148/DSCF5075.jpg
Looks like I need to weld on some new shock mounts. Can anyone help me out with this? Much thanks!
Also need to put in a battery box, paint the frame, and figure out if my truck is leaking oil from the main or the dorks at Jiffy lube overfilled it again. [steam cleaning] Priority is the shocks, I can do most the other stuff at my place. More than happy to help other people out or bring some some tools and :xbeer3: 's.
My batterys leaking again with all the bouncing.

10-27-2007, 01:27 PM
Mine used to rub, too. But if you switch to a monotube shock, you'll eliminate the issue.
See, twin tube shocks have a larger diameter, because they're actually two tubes, one inside the other. They also have a big, bulky cover over the piston rod, with an even larger diameter. Looks like this is the part that's contacting in your situation.
With a KYB or a Bilstein, you have a monotube design, which is narrower, and won't contact the leafs. My KYBs have a rubber boot covering the piston rod, rather than a hard metal or plastic sleeve, and there is no contact with the leaf springs.
ziggy428
10-27-2007, 03:48 PM
Twin tube (no sleeve) probably doesn't help. My shocks run 14" of travel when fully extended so the springs can sway from side to side more. (Pro-comp ES 9000 compressed: 18" Extended: 32") According to Off Road Solutions if you're going to use 12-14" travel shocks you need to move the mounts inward so the shock and spring don't hit. They sell mounts and tabs and stuff. What do you think?
spindleshanks
10-27-2007, 06:42 PM
If you feel like doing some fabrication, then go for it. It's probably a good idea if there's a kit readily available.
I'm not sure I totally understand the situation:
When the axle is fully extended downward, the edge of the leaf pack contacts the shock absorber's upper cover? I guess I'd have to see it happen to be able to visualize it.
On my truck, there was rubbing when the OME twin tubes contacted the leaf pack at full articulation. It was worse on the passenger side. My new monotube shocks are just slightly more narrow, so there is no contact. If I had chosen Bilsteins or the other model of KYB monotubes (GR2) they would be even skinnier still.
Do you have aftermarket leafs or shackles that allow more articulation than stock?
ziggy428
10-27-2007, 07:27 PM
I had to replace my springs and got a pair of 57" long Alcans. The 62" long Deaver springs have 16-18" of travel if that gives you any idea. I'd be kinda into making something, ORS has some kind of bar you can weld in with mounts. Its basically just a tube with bolts going out of it though. The problem doesn't happen when both sides go full down its only when one side is stuffed and the other is fully extended. I think that makes the leaf twist inward.

Unfortunately I pulled something awful in my neck this morning. I have been in serious pain most of the day. (I have a traction device I have to keep using) I have called a Dr. on call at my orthopedist and they told me if that pain gets any worse I might have to go to the ER if I can't stand it. (All I need is to have them prescribe me some muscle relaxant or pain med - GAH!) I am loaded up on advil... but hopefully I will sleep tonight... But the wrench fest is on for tomorrow... even if I have to lie down a lot... :D (So I prolly will not be carving any pumpkins tomorrow.. but we will see)
Oh and if any of you want a brew you gotta bring it since I did not get out today and get any. Sorry - My neck was too jacked up to drive!
