Hey all,
Any words of wisdom will be appreciated.
After my romp in the Tanks a couple weeks ago I notice a real bad grinding noise on the passenger rear.
I don't notice it when driving at speeds.
Only when in parking lot or rolling into driveway, very slow speeds.
LAst weekend I put the truck on jackstands and started the engine and put her into drive.
I got out and went into the back and under the truck, was listening to the pinion,no sounds there, looking at the driveshaft, all looks straight, spinning no noise, maybe the rear end, no felt it not hot, no noise. But outside by the wheel it sounded like wheel bearing.
So I went to Auto zone today and spent $ 80.00 on the Bearing, the retaining ring and the inner and outer seal.
(checker had none in town, had to order)
I get home jack her up, take out the axle.
I was following this right up.

I didn't expect to see the ABS sensor gear in there because I don't have ABS.
I posted a picture of the axle assembly after taking it out of truck.
First starting from top, is the ring that seals against the oil seal just inside the tube.
Then the gear. Both of these items appear to be pressed on only. there is no snap ring on top of these two.
Then under the gear there is a snap ring and then the retaining ring then the bearing.
I don't have a press, I was going to be a shadetree mechanic and slam the whole axle assembly into the ground, but this seems a little primative.:saw:
I am worried about taking aff the snap ring out and starting to drive the axle out and then fawking the whole shooting match.
Help? Words of encouragement. :2cents:

Chef I'd be willing to help you figure it out. I don't have any experience with the Toyota rears since I never had to take mine apart, but I'm sure we could figure it out. I'm press-less, so if we'd need one, that could be an issue. Maybe Taco-Ray could give you some helpful pointers. I'm pretty sure Shane has ripped his apart a few times.

Ok so here is where I'm at with this, I put the axle back in, and Jonathan helped me bleed the brakes.
We leave to go get Dragon food and to throw the football around at the local park, and no more noise.
It was just then that I realized when we took the rear wheel off, all the lug nuts felt loose, like they loosened without any torque when I put the wrench on them.
I think the grinding I was hearing was the aluminum wheel against the wheel studs.
I am going to take this opportunity to try and eliminate other noises from under the truck.
My front brake pads rattle like crazy I found out tonight.
My springs squeek pretty good.
Bushings are maybe drying out a little.
I am looking forward to replacing my Mickey Thompson Baja Claws.
They are awesome on the rocks, but I have been wheeling 2wice in the past year.
I am/will be replacing with BFG 37"X15"X17" and new steel wheels.
I will get certs because I blow BFG sidewalls like crazy, but I have also been able to run 3 years on a set of tires.
My Bajas are all wavy and rumbly, it is almost weird how the low spots can be so much lower than the rest of the rubber on the rest of the tire, but they have a pattern of highs and lows, all wavy.
Thank you Mike.

Yogi had made a tool to do the bearings. If yours are bad might contact him to borrow

Let me know Chef if you need a hand, I'm sure I can find time to help you if ya need something. If the wheels were loose, make sure they didn't wallow out. You don't want one of those ripping off while going down the road. If all is sounding good, then super weee.

i have a tool that i made in ten minutes that works very good. Use a press,
an air chisel is a must,abs-tone ring will get destroyed during removal. once you get the process down it only takes about 15min. I used a short peice of pipe and a long one to tap everything back on. Tool rental fee is beer let me know if you need it.
Yea the ABS rig will get fawked no matter what but good thing is you don't have to replace it because u don't have ABS.

But I do need the ring that is located just above it, that is the surface where the axle tube oil seal mates to.
So If I destroy the ring gear, maybe the ring above it will be mis aligned?

just make sure it goes back where it was. those ABS rings are very expensive
but sense you dont have ABS dont worry about it. I am going to make a tool to remove those things without damaging them next time i do mine.

Good luck on removing the ABS without destroying it. I've never been able to, but never really tried either. On the retainer ring that the seal rides on, its easy if you use something to measure the distance from the bearing first with, and then just reinstall it at the same spot. I use a pocket screwdriver and some white paint, or you could be "professional" and use a micrometer (the depth gauge part at the end). But that way involves remembering the depth, or writing a number down, neither of which I like to do...:D
Props on figuring out that the seal rides on that ring.
Remove the abs and retainer before attempting to remove the snap ring- much easier. (ask nate)
Also wheel bearings usually make more noise at freeway speeds than at parking lot speed, just a note for the future.
If you need more help, let me know.:)

Chef,
I dont know if you have replaced this stuff yet. But I have a tool that I made to replace the bearings and seals. I can remove everything without destroying any of it! :) I also have a press wich makes doing all the work fairly easy.
Let me know if you need help... Im off Thur, Fri, Sat and most of Sunday.

Yogi your awesome.
I guess I was a little hasty in determining it was the rear wheel bearing.
When I had the axle out, I wiggled the axle in the backing plate and there was a little play, but when I put the axle back in and tightened all my lug nuts, that noise went away.
I am thinking it was loose lugnuts. And the holes did not get wallowed out.
First time that has happened to me.
I know you had to change out wheel bearings in the rear before.
What made your bearing go bad? And what made you determine it was the bearings that where bad? Was it the load on/off the corners?

I had one wheel bearing that was falling apart. Scary! Another bearing had alot of play. If your seals start to leak I think it causes premature failure of the bearing.
If you need help replacing them... let me know.

As a side note.... I use a bearing puller combined with the SST that I made to remove the ABS bearing. In order to get the bearing puller around the ABS ring you have to tap out the 4 studs on the backing plate first. Very easy to remove and replace those.

if your leakinf dif fluid your bearing is trashed. if not put back together. you can also take the abs ring off all together. if you dont have it.
