I figured I'd post my Tacoma build here in the GA forum first for you guys.
Truck Info:
1997 Extra Cab 3.4 Automatic
The plans:
- Spring Under SAS using 2 top leafs from a 85 4Runner pack and 5 leafs from rancho pack.
- 85 Mini Front Axle with IFS hubs and 1.5" spacers to = 61.5" WMS to WMS.
- Dual 23 spline cases using Inchworms tranny to transfer adapter and Marlins MC07-R10 transfer adapter.
- 4.88's front and rear
- Aussie Locker in the rear and High Pinion e-locker up front
- 35" Maxxis Bighorns all-around on Summits 164 Series Wheels.
- Bob bed to Double Cab length.
sweet i love seeing build up threads, especially for tacomas.
question though, why are you doing spring under instead of a typical spring over setup?
gregers05
11-15-2007, 10:32 PM
I figured that would be the first question.
A typical SAS makes a tacoma TO HIGH  I want the truck LOW :D .
For real: I think a SAS'd Tacoma with a spring over and 35" tires looks like ass.
ah i see. that make sense i guess. since it is your dd i guess your not all that concerned about clearance as much...?
REDTACOtjm123
11-15-2007, 10:34 PM
another thought...
also i thought spring over made more flex as well?
then again i am me,and prolly wrong
gregers05
11-15-2007, 10:52 PM
Correct, plus you don't lose that much clearance with a spring under.
yeah this is true.
as far as which has better flex, i would think they are both about the same and if they are different, its by a small amount which doesnt matter since is a dd

Damn man looking good.. SOA will allow for better travel but SUA allows for better control on on the road. He has another ramp champ that sits in the back yard.
Also don't hang out with Greg(Yotaman) he's a bad influence!

Sweet! I definitely like the SUA idea. It's something that you don't see too often but will definitely work well if it's built correctly. Imho, suspension stability is an often overlooked aspect to a rig's design and a sua setup should give you a tremendous amount of stability on the trail. Plus, I like the whole sleeper look that you'll probably end up with. This might be more work than you want to do but I think it would be cool if you sua'd the rear too.

Here's a little tech.
When doing the IFS Hub Swap on a Toyota front axle tap the calipers to 1/2" fine thread and drill the knuckles out to 1/2". Now you can mount the calipers to the other side of the knuckle.
Here's a picture of my new V6 IFS calipers 1/2" fine thread taped.

I'll get some more pictures of everything mounted later.

Here's a picture of my ramp champ. It's at around 24" frame to ground on 4D's and it's going to stay like that. I've got a lot planned for it when the Tacoma is done. Lots of cutting and moving axles around to make it work but it'll be low and WIDE and ALL TOYOTA.

those 63" on the 4 runner?
What's the plans for the rear of the Taco? AAL, 63"s?The 4Runner has trail-gear leaf front and rear for now. It'll have something different come round 2.
Not sure for the rear of the Tacoma. Going to play it by rear for now, finish the front and then do the rear. More than likely a custom pack mix matching Toyota leafs.

Totally off topic but which trailgear springs are you running on the front of the other one? How long are your shackles? They're 4" up front and 5" in the rear. I think the shackles are 5.5". It worked great with 35" - 37" tires. It has major gangster lean. It leans 1-2" to the driver side. I don;t know if it's TG springs or what. I know some other people have said they have the same problem.

I am dropping the head off at the machine shop in the morning and hope to get it back together by next weekend. Once it is running good i will see what else i want to tackle.

You'll need to move your IFS box forward or use an FJ80/FJ60 forward swing box.

That is what I was thinking. If only I had some stock rears sitting around and some other spring packs sitting around. by the time i bought junkyard parts to build a pack i could probably buy a set of trailgear springs. I really need to find another ifs 4runner of this vintage. I am pretty sure the box was moved forward some but I can't really tell how much without anything to reference it to.

Use the springs out of the rear of the truck and then put some tundra or other springs back there. You can get springs from pullapart for cheap and most junk yards sell them for cheap.
They have some 80 model trucks over at the Norcross pullapart location.

I got my tie rod and drag link ordered today. I had to have the drag link tapped 21mm on one side instead of 23mm so it took some time to find someone who could do 21mm.
BudBuilt is making both of them and they should be here next week. Then the truck will technically be drivable.
Here's a picture of my FJ60 tie rod ends. This is what allows me to use stock steering arms and do Spring Under.

Discount tire has a $100 off coupon on their website good at anystore this friday and saturday. But they won't price match and let me use it. There would still be more if I payed there reg price then used the coupon plus I have to pay tax if I buy from discount. Oh and they have to install them so you have to pay whatever they want to install them. I got all excited this morning when I say the coupon and called them. Sometimes they'll price match a competitor then let you use the coupon. I did it on some wheels a few months back.

Sweet man! I'm in the same "keep it low" crowd. Its damn near impossable to do with high steer and soa. I'm also in the "all toyota" crawd also, been looking at going with the fj80/lx450 front, and also using the foward swing box.
The axle choice intriges me and i'm interested to see how it turns out, more so i'm interested in the gold runner with the fj62 front.. any pics/specs?
OH, and my 35" bighorns balance better that any bfg i've owned... 31"-37", at/ko, and mt/km

OH, and my 35" bighorns balance better that any bfg i've owned... 31"-37", at/ko, and mt/kmThe Tacoma body measures the same width as a pre-Tacoma without the fender flares. So I figured the mini axle was a perfect choose for my SAS. I was planning to use the FJ62 front on the Tacoma but figured if I'm only planning to run 35's the 9.5" differential would be a waste on the Tacoma.
I don't currently have the FJ62 front under the 95 (I'd be interested in selling the FJ62 front if you want). I'm thinking about not using it and using the FJ80 front I have in the driveway w/ a 3 link and panhard, and using the FJ80 full floater in the rear w/ leaf springs. I have the set in the garage and no one wants to buy them for what they're worth.

Sweet, I was trying to convince that guy to part it out, what shape are the seats in? We definitely need to talk. They're in good shape, a couple of small tears on the driver. I'm planning to keep the front seats for the Tacoma unless the $$$ are right to get them away from me. :D The rear seats are in great shape.
I've got a customer that purchased a Toyota Uhaul truck, it's got a dually and everything. Instead or me replacing every seal and belt on a 240,000 3.0 V6 I talked him into swapping a 3.4. After he drove my 3.4 swapped 4Runner it was an easy sell. :missingto
I'm officially in the Toyota motor swap business. I'll be selling custom wiring harness's for 2.7, 3.4 V6, 4.0 & 4.7 V8. Plus I'll offer full swaps (drop your truck off, I do work, then you drive off in a better truck.) I'm still working out all the details to get plugs and everything from Toyota.
I'll be swapping a 4.0 V8 into the beast (1995 4Runner) this year also. Going to pick up my V8 in a week or so.

I'm thinking the exact same as you on the fj80 stuff. I'm lookinging into either a radius arm set up or just straight 3 link front, with a leaved rear. I figure the best stuff to use for sas is the stuff toyota desined fir sfa. I'm interested to see how you go about the exhaust routing with the t-case flip/duals. I'll be r&d ing for a while and your build thread will be close watched.

Yeah. I've found a few LOW LOW mileage 4.0's. I told Lori I was going to swap her 3.4 out for a 4.0 and she just looked at me and rolled her eyes.

I got a bunch or nuts and bolts ordered from McMaster-Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com) today. These will replace my differential studs and make it harder for them to back out or loosen up. This will do the same thing that Trail-Gears Differential Stud Eliminator Kit (http://trail-gear.com/toy-diffstud.html) does, but for less money (around $27.00), plus I get enough stuff to do 5 1/2 differentials. That comes out to less than $5 per differential plus you'll still have washers and nuts left over.

For less than $10.00 you'll have enough to do both sides plus 8 more. If you'd like to only buy enough for the job Ace Hardware sells them and It'll cost you around $6 for enough to do just both sides of one axle.

I also ordered some new Energy-Suspension Polyurethane Body Mount bushings from AutoZone for when I take out the body lift. I figured that would be the best time to upgrade those bushings - plus the kit comes with stock hardware.
Part Number for the black kit is: "8.4103G" and the price was $73.00. That's $12.00 cheaper than 4crawler.com plus no shipping charges if you go into the store and order the kit instead of online.
This same kit should fit all 1995.5 and up Extra-Cab Tacoma's.

I have one in the garage but need to find another one so I'll have one the the Tacoma and one for the beater. If anyone runs across one that needs some TLC let me know. I'll take one in any kind of shape if the price is right.
I'm also going to use a 3.0 radiator in the Tacoma because they don't hang down like the Tacoma 3.4 ones do. Using the 3.0 one will allow me to keep the radiator up and away from rocks. I think it's a direct bolt in swap but I still need to measure to make sure.
I have a 3.0 radiator in my 3.4 swapped 4Runner and it doesn't run hot or anything.

Here's what I've figure out on the radiator.
V6 3.0 Radiator
Height = 19.125"
Thickness = 2.000"
Width = 20.750"
Cubic Inches = 793"
1997 Tacoma V6 3.4 Radiator
Height = 22.625"
Thickness = 1.000"
Width = 25.625"
Cubic Inches = 579"
The 3.0 V6 radiator is bigger by over 200 cubic inches. No wonder my 3.4 in the swapped truck runs cooler than other 3.4's. With a bracket I can make the 3.0 work in the Tacoma.
Thats more work than it's worth. I thought about doing that but I'd say it's not worth it. Just go duals for $700 and move the exhaust over some and be golden. :D

Couple steering questions.....
What are you doing for a HP line from pump to box?
And what is the longest usable length of the hybrid shaft?Plan is to use stock Tacoma line.
It's around 25" extended but you could probably get another 1" if needed. It's 21" compressed and I might have to cut it some to make it work for me after taking out the 3" body lift.
How you going to use the stock HP line? Its way to short on the 3.4. I'm wondering if a 3.0 pre taco line will work? I know the fittings should but what about the length?
Thanks on the shaft #'s, hopefully it will work with an IFS box also......we'll see.

It was a really nice day today so I got a lot done.
1. I cleaned my garage (started it yesterday). That sucked but it needed to be done.
2. Got the bed off the truck and into the garage so I can bob it.
3. Got the rear taken apart. The previous owner had 3 1/2" lift blocks  and some spacers on the rear axle - the lug nuts on the spacers were not even tight. I'm so glade this truck never say the road after the last owner touched it. It would have killed someone.
4. Got the front off jack stands and on it's weight finally. Frame to ground measurement is 21". It locks so little now. I've gotten use to seeing it 10' in the air.
5. I'm going to start cutting the bed up tonight. I need to know the measurements of a double cab bed. I'm going to drive around the wal-mart parking lot looking for a double cab to measure it unless you guys know the measurements for sure. :D

I order my wheels. I went with a Discount Tire wheel. It looks like Cragar Soft 8's. I went with a 10 wheel sense this truck will see more street than off-road. They say the 10" wheel will make the tires wear better than an 8". We'll see, hope it was worth it. I also got 4 road hazard certificates. I told them the tires would see sharp rocks and that I guaranteed it that they would replace at least 2 of the tires and they said no problem.

I'll take some when I get home.
I used herculiner for the floor of my truck. Cost was $80-90 with tax. Came with brush, roller, two roller pad thingies, and a gallon of the black stuff. Used a wire wheel to get rid of as much rust and crud as possible. Wiped with acetone.
Directions say to dab on with a brush for all the corners and tough to get areas. Then roll that s#!t awn. Wait a couple hours then roll it on again. I think I used about a half a gallon with what I did. Best part is, you can basically make it as thick as you want. By putting multiple coats on (recommended was 2)

I need body filler recommendations. Is Bondo as bad as everyone says. It's the only thing I can find around here.
Bondo is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be as long as it is used correctly. Just make sure you prep the surface really well or else it might not stick. Read the directions and follow them carefully and you should be fine. The only option I know of short of lead, is fiberglass, but it won't work in all situations, but it is strong if you can use. I say go with the Bondo and use it correctly and I don't think you'll have any problems.

beleive it or not...... (ODD I know) When we were making Custom boxes and body parts for our shop (RPM Pro Audio) we used fiberglass resin and Bondo for our base coat.
Later on it became Resin and sheetrock mud. Which sanded much easier, and turned out to be just as hard if not harder in the end. :)

The keys I've learned today are - thin layers are a good thing. I put a thin layer on sand it down then another layer then sand then layer and so on. I'd say it's coming out decent. I'm going to sand this last layer then call it good if there's no real pits. I'll get you guys some pictures later.

The pro Line-X and such are thicker then the Hurc that you roll on. But if you apply it right, scotchbrite the surface, it'll last. My son and I did his Jeep tub. The first coat will be thin. I wouldn't expect one coat to cover. It doesn't take much to do three or more coats, it is worth it. The first coat will use more then the next two. It may not be as good as the pro stuff but for a $100 it's not bad.

Could the ignition switch actually be bad?
yotaman
12-20-2007, 02:26 PM
Problem solved. It was the main 80 amp fuse. The top was still connected on the fuse so it must of shorted down in the fuse were I couldn't see it.
After looking over the FSM wiring diagrams for about 2 hours last night I decided it had to be that fuse so I just said f@wk it and purchased a new one. Four dollars and a few minutes solved the problem. Replacing that fuse is a pain because you have to take the fuse box apart to get to the 2 screws that hold it in.
Now I just have to figure out how to get the truck in my garage so I can work on it during the rain and at night. I need this truck finished and drivable.

Body mount bushings have been replaced and the 3" body lift has been removed. What a pain in the butt. I removed the 3" body lift and put in a 1 1/4" body lift in. This will allow me to clock my cases and get a flat belly. I cut the 3" body pucks down and used them instead of buying more pucks. If you have a table saw it's easy to cut body lift pucks in half.

It's easy to get the PV installed. Buy some 10" long 3/16" size brake line and cut the fittings off. Now make 2 new lines - you need them to have the stock Toyota fitting on one end and the 3/16" domestic fitting on the other end.

I like the location of that PV, lemme know how it works out. Are metric ported PVs not available? I gotta get one soon....
I just put a 1" MC on my old truck (Marlin had em' on sale) and it's remedied a long peddle issue I had but bias is off. I dumped the LSPV too with a plan to go disco-duck rears on an IFS axel, axle... uh, rear end.
Anyway, looks like your working like a mad man!! Gitter-done!! :D

Well I can barely walk today. So I guess I might have busted my knee up worst than I thought. :D

Hope it stops hurtin' soon!:D or some grease. I just played lazy today. I'll get back to work on the truck tonight or tomorrow. Knee is a little better.
Lesson learned: When pulling with all your weight on a nut with a 3 foot heavy a$$ breaker bar keep your limbs out of the way in case it slips. :xsmokin1: I have a lot of lessons for working on trucks. I could write a book.

Been doing research on the power steering crap. If it's long enough a power steering hose off an old SA truck might work.
Here's a picture. Does anyone know if the power steering pump is on the left or right side of the motor on those trucks?

EDIT: never mind. I looked at my 22re powered truck and the PSP is on the driver side so it'll be to short. I wish I'd started this PS stuff earlier it's going to be the last thing and hold my ass up on driving the truck.

I've got a few of the threaded end pieces you see in the above picture laying around. I'm going to take them to a shop that can make me a hydraulic hose and have them make me a hose like you see above but make it 4 feet long.
Kyle: where did you get your hoses made for your hydro assist?

Do that or call parts mike and see if he can help. As for the hyd assist the hose can be made anywhere that makes hoses. The cylinder is standard thread and the box can be taped for standard threads. The best place to have hoses made is napa i have them make hoses for me all the time. Most Napa's use Weatherhead hoses and there good quality.

I'll try my local Napa. If I bring Napa the ends they should be able to make my hose.

I got them made at Royal Brass and Hose. Down the street from my house. Find the fitting needed and the length. They will make anything you need.

Well I went to 3 places (Slack, Napa, and a mom & pop place) to see if I could get a hose made. No one can make a hose with metric ends. They told me they can't reuse my old ends if I cut them off the old hoses.

Wizard Automotive in Douglasville, Ga will make them. I know they are a ways off from you, but they will ship, or you could drive down.

We had them make all of the hoses and hardlines we needed for our restorations when I worked at Bud's Benz.

I was thinking about converting the metric fitting to AN using one of these 2 fittings. Does anyone see a difference between the 2 other than $5? I'm going to order the cheaper one unless you guys see it being worth the extra $5 for the other one.
-6 AN to 16mm x 1.5 male - Cheaper of the 2 (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=RUS%2D670530&N=700+4294849620+4294906726+4294906520+115&autoview=sku)
The other one (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=RUS%2D670531&N=700+4294849620+4294906726+4294906520+115&autoview=sku)
I figure if I convert them over I'll buy 2 hoses and carry a spare plus I can find lots of places to make AN hydro hoses. What do you guys think?
