Ive read tons of write-ups on the deckplate mod, dont seem to be much different from each other...but would it affect the mod at all to not put the deckplate on? just drill a good size hole in the side and leave it? im guessing the cover for the deckplate serves for protection when wheeling? also, anyone know how much gain it gives? surely not too much, but hey, anything helps

Best not to cut a big hole in your intake without a way to seal it up later. That hole will suck in lots of water if you go through big puddles, stream, etc. Also, if you are following somebody down a very dusty road, you probably don't want the front of the air box wide open. Spend the $10 and install the deckplate so you can seal it up as needed.

not that great of an idea just to cut a huge hole without any way to seal it when you go play in the mud...so to speak...

Dyno reports show that with the deckplate mod and an Amsoil or K&N Filter it gives about 6-8HP....I admit it does have better throttle response and sound great....but i'm guessing it gives about 3-5HP.

i honestly dont think it did anything other than make the exhaust sound better on my truck, i did this mod the same weeked i lifted and put bigger tires on my truck so i have no idea if i improved my milage or not, on paper i should get better gas milage but im skeptical

Because after all, the seat of your pants is probably much more accurate than any dyno could ever be...

Some guy's on other threads are sayng that the Dyno test prove 15 more horse power. Who knows for sure? I'm thinking it would change from engine to engine as there is just way to many variables for proper testing unless it was done with new engines under the same lab conditions. Just my thoughts on it for what that's worth :) Mike
if there is no deckplate, then it cant really be a deckplate mod, can it?
how about the air-hole mod.

Yea, Good one LGOP ! and if you don't cut any holes and just remove the elbow we can call it the E-Mod. If you cut the hole and don't use the deck plate then we can call it the A-Hole mod. :)

I just realized your avatar makes it look like the...rodent... is shitting when he squats.
I also got a pretty decent exhaust sound as well after I got a K&N cold air. Right around 2 grand it sounds like I've got a 50 series. Not to mention, one hell of a rod soundin' machine when I peg 3 grand and up. HP difference? Too small of a gain to tell. HP gains come from REAL mods anyways.

I cut the whole front of my box out. Meaning the size of the air filter is the size of the hole. LOL
Its alright unless u go mud bugging. I have to remove the entire box,MAF, filter and clean the box out with a hose pipe. If i go deep mud snorklin.
BTW....any one got a old air box lieng around without the whole cut in it!!

I just did the deckplate mod and I cant believe how much difference it could make in a normally aspirated vehicle. It sounds way better and pulls harder. In my turbo talon when i cut open the intake and threw in a K&N it helped with spool-up, but I dont think it changed the sound of the car at all. Anything thats free, sounds cool, looks professional, and pulls harder is ok with me! :)

dyno shows that you get about +7-8 RWP gain. dynos are stationary and recycle the same hot engine air, when you drive the air you suck in is replaced constantly with cooler (note i didnt say cool) air. because of this, you would actually get slightly higher (might be negligible) hp when driving vs dyno. the dyno was performed using an amsoil filter.

I can't tell you if or how much difference there is between a 3", 4", or 5" deckplate. What I can tell you is that I have a 4" deckplate and an Airaid MIT on my truck and it is HELLA loud. I mean, personally, I like it. My girlfriend hates it, but that's the beauty of her having her own vehicle. You get quite of bit of sound increase just from adding the deckplate, but then if you do the Airaid MIT with it and remove the silencer, it's gets even louder.
I seriously doubt there would be much noticable difference in the different sizes of deckplates though.

drabnor,
Did you cut up one of those Ebay "cold air intakes" to make the tube going from the box to the throttle body?
