Hey since your already doing a internet covered build, why not copy and paste your progress on this forum too. I have been thinking bout putting some of the buildup stuff from my rig on here and his might get me motivated to do it.

Just for you:

bought some new toys today (10-30-07).... cant wait to bring them home. Got a package deal (and it was a good deal):

2 84 Toyota Pickup Reg Cab Shortbed 22R 5spds and a '85 4Runner 22RE 5spd.

As soon as I get them home I'll post pics. The 85 Runner will most likely be for sale in the next couple months if anyone is looking (but it probably will have a 22R in it, not a 22RE.) I plan on finishing it with parts off of one of the 84 pickups, then selling it to help offset costs. One of the 84's I'll keep for a new wheelin rig, and the other 84, depending on whats left, will either get scrapped/sold for parts, or given/sold to my cousin for labor on the other 2.

Picture Time!!!!

1st up: The 84 Pickup parts truck...

Next up, the 84 Reg Cab I'm keeping, with a teaser of the Runner....

Never mind the paper towels, I've been working here.... :hillbill:

And finally the 85 4Runner:

I think the 84 pickup and 85 runner will clean up pretty nicely.... These pics are what they looked like when I first brought them home, I've already started working.

You'll notice the runner needs a motor and tranny. Went to work on the parts truck to check out the motor, but found this (after some work):
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/6932/dsci0450xx4.jpg
Note the rust in the cylinders... Its not bad, but not good enough for a quicky....

So I started rummaging around in the back of the 84 I'm keeping and found these (there are 2 motors):
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/5112/dsci0442id1.jpg

Tried to spin the long block, froze up. Moved onto the short block, spun freely... flopped it over and looked at it, it looked good. Now its sitting in my garage waiting for the teardown...
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5563/dsci0451sh8.jpg

While I'm doin that I'm going to have a buddy of mine go through a head and get it all ready to bolt on when I'm ready!

11-10-07: I started working on cleaning up the exterior of the 85 while taking a break from building the motor for it... heres a couple pics. I figure the motor should be done by the end of the month at the latest.

Before:

Also, note I didnt clean up the tailgate or the hood.. just the side... more to come!

I finished cleaning up the outside for the most part... here are some good before and afters:

(sorry for the blurryness.... )

Also an update on the motor... The bottom end is ready for rods and pistons (which are almost ready to go....) and the head should be done this weekend. I hope to have the motor together by Thanksgiving!

Transmission looks like its going to be a 5spd, but I'm not too sure if its going to be a G52 or a W56... Will know more as soon as I pull it out of the parts truck.

11-28-07, Update on the 85: I started tearing out the interior to spruce it up. Here it is taking out the seats:

http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/7904/dsci0498dh0.jpg

Heres after vacuuming up all the crap and pulling up the vinyl floor:

And the back after a vacuum:

The back after pulling up the floor and taking out the seat bottom:

http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/4849/dsci0510mi8.jpg

All the stuff out:
http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/7787/dsci0512gm5.jpg

Also figured out this was a utility model, not a passenger model. The back side panels dont have knockouts for the rear seat back clips, nor does it have the bracketry for the seat back.

Right now I'm working on gutting the entire interior to clean up inside the truck and inspect the operation of everything. Soon as its all good, all the interior parts will get a thorough cleaning and be reinstalled!

Well I got all the side panels off and got most of the dash stuff gutted. Here are some pics of the dash:

And I found another use for a suburban, mobile storage facility:

12-18-07: Well, its time for an update.... (no they just arent sitting there rotting, I've been waiting for a break in the weather).

I still have the interior gutted in the 85. I've got a bunch of days off coming up for christmas, which I'm going to used to clean the interior parts, and put the interior back together. Should have that done by monday.

The donor motor that is sitting in the 84 is finally spinning now. the rings were lightly seized to the cylinders. it took a couple weeks of sitting in kero to free it up. the starter was also hung on it, which wasnt helping matters. It still only revolves about 3/4 of a crank revolution, so as soon as i get 2 full revolutions of the crank out of it I'm going to reinstall a good starter and work on firing it up.

The goal is to get the 84 running, and hopefully a little mobile, enough to check the operation of the engine and trans. That should let me know if there is anything I need to do or fix on either between pulling it out of the 84 and putting it in the 85. The fuel injection conversion will also happen between the pulling and the putting. I hope to have it ready to try to start and run by next weekend (not this coming).

Update again. Got the entire enterior cleaned in the 85, and all the interior parts. Its ready for the interior to be reinstalled. Also tried to get the 84 running and i just couldnt get the compression high enough to kick, so I pulled it out. Already got it disassembled and took it to the carwash and pressure washed the block and head. Got a new crank kit, new rings, and good rods/pistons, so as soon as it dries out, its reassembly time.

I've also decided that I'm just going to rebuild a W56 trans for it. Since I'm going to the length of rebuilding a motor for it, I might as well.

Now for some pictures!

Scrub a dub dub on some interior:

Lookin good! :xpimp:

My neighbors laughed at me when I was washing my project, try to get the tree sap and junk off of it before it even ran. I hadn't even washed the daily drivers in months. :D

that sounds just like this... both my drivers are filthy as is my wheelin rig, but my project is spotless...

How bout washing it in the end of november and the middle of december, that always draws attention.

Well an update: I'm currently taking some time away due to my brother blowing up his motor in his 86 4Runner (which is now at my house, for a total of 6 toyotas in my yard, 4 of which dont run, for those who are counting). But we'll get to that in a minute.

While working on this motor for the 85 that I pulled out of the 84 I decided it was junk :( . While I was disassembling it I noticed the thrust washers for the crank were improperly installed and that the crank had walked forward. I had made the assumption that it only did it a little, and just scared up the main cap a little. Well, the short of it is it did a little more than scar it up. Determined the block is now a large paperweight. Pics:

Bad #3 Cap (thrust cap):
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/2615/dsci0604gn6.jpg
http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/4908/dsci0608vq4.jpg

My new paper weight:
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/5325/dsci0609kg0.jpg

So now that I needed another SD block I went on the hunt. Then I remember my mom had a good block from a 87 pickup sitting in her garage that just needed bearings. I thought, awesome! So Christmas Day (timing is everything) I asked her if I could have it for my projects. She agreed. So I drug that shortblock home, and stuck it on the stand. Then I did all this:
http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/7954/dsci0613xf2.jpg
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/4773/dsci0610gp0.jpg
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/2565/dsci0614op2.jpg
http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/5569/dsci0616yk6.jpg
http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/5843/dsci0617qu5.jpg
http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/4333/dsci0618ta2.jpg
http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/4940/dsci0619qm9.jpg
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/9615/dsci0620sy8.jpg
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/2998/dsci0623ls1.jpg
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/5285/dsci0626wd8.jpg
http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/5143/dsci0627bz2.jpg
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/934/dsci0628ev8.jpg
http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/730/dsci0630qn8.jpg
http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/9956/dsci0631jk0.jpg
http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/452/dsci0632ge9.jpg

Then after doing all that I called it a night. Then it dawned on me. Since I had already decided that I'm selling the 84 pickup too, I should just finish the motor for it, since thats all it should need (I had it cranking and ready to go before pulling the paperweight out). So, off the stand with the 85's pretty short block, and back on the stand for the TD motor I had started on way back when, (before the decision to go FI in the runner).

Pretty 85 4Runner motor off the stand:
http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/9189/dsci0633rw9.jpg

84's TD motor back on the stand and lubed up:
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/9303/dsci0636ya6.jpg
http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/64/dsci0637ew5.jpg

Another new crank ready for install:
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/1717/dsci0638iz0.jpg

So then I get that nice shiny crank installed, on to find out that the thrust is out of spec... So I had to pull it back out. That was last thursday. My mom was coming out to visit Friday, so I just had her deliver a new replacement crank for me. After I had installed it (it checked out good too) and installed the pistons and rods with new rings, she got a call from my brother. This is when I found out about him blowing up that motor. Now, can you guess the play by play that followed?

Well, heres a starter: remember that nice pretty block for the 85 I just built a bottom end for? Remember where it came from? Guess what its original purpose was for.... It was a "just in case Chris (my brother), blows up his motor we have another." so I got to surrender my beautiful short block to my little bro. Now my mom says shes going to make is square, so we'll see.... I really think I'm about to get the short end of the stick.... not only do I lose the motor, but I also get to install it (free of charge of course cause my brother is more broke than the dishes in a dysfunctional abusive marriage - probably a bad analogy, but you get the idea). I'm sure it will all come out alright in the end, my mom is good for her word, plus doing this for my bro is helping her out big time (cause if I didnt do it, shed have to pay soemone to do it), but this is setback in progress....

Well, after I get his rig rollin again, I'll start back on finishing up the 84 pickup and will update when I get to that! Hope everyone's had a good new year!

Ya got to love family! It seems if anyone throws a wrench in my plans its family. I quit dealing with my bro in law on anything vehicle related becouse of this, and I lost interest in a truck I had been working on for my nephews first vehicle, becouse of my sister.

Urgh family!

It is nice to be the savior sometimes, but it seems family becomes reliant on that way to easy.

Good luck!

Update time. I finished up my brothers motor (the motor that should have gone in the 85.) Painted it blue, almost a perfect match to the exterior of his truck. Should get it put in tomorrow and away it goes. Also got my 84's motor back on the stand and am starting to work on finishing it up. Now for some pics:

I found the failure of my brothers motor to be a cracked/spun/shelled #3 rod bearing. Also saw some good wear on #2, but not bad enough to lock it up
(unlike #3 which locked er up.) Only got one pic right now, but will get more when I start building that motor for the 85.

Also, the pictures make the motor look lighter in color than it really is, its a couple shades darker, but looks really nice. I was going to disassemble the intakes and clean them up, but I decided they worked before so he can mess with it.

Update time again:

Almost have the motor done for the 84 pickup. All that I'm lacking is to install the exhaust manifold and install it in the truck. Current problem is the exhaust manifold I need to use is still in the parts truck, and it doesnt want to play nice. I'm letting it soak in some PB for a while and hopefully it will come willingly. On to some pics:

Nice new timing set installed (notice the double set :kewl: ):

I have some news. The pickup has the motor in it, and it starts and runs (almost... carb needed rebuilt, got rebuilt, needs to be installed). The 4runner may be sold as is to a group who will convert it to an ambulance to use in a rural part of El Salvador. Will keep everyone posted!

Today some more progress was made with the 84 pickup. I finally got around to putting the carb on it. Started it up with the fuel pump pulling out of a 2.5 gallon can. Started right up and ran. So then I decided to up the ante and pour the fuel in the gas tank and see if it would start. Sure enough, started and ran. So I decided on a final wager, close the hood and take it for a spin. Well, its alive now. Drove good, but needed some power steering fluid and some other little odds and ends. The important thing is it runs and drives now. Now to tie up the few loose ends, drive it around a little to get the rings to seat (blowing a little smoke), and it should be golden! (i.e. for sale)

Well, got back to workin on the 4Runner. I got the interior reassembled in the truck and cleaned and shined it. Next up is pulling the motor out of my 87 which will be going into the 85 with the W56 and transfer, along with a new clutch install between trucks! Heres some pics (still got a little work to do in the interior, but its pretty much done now):

I know! And sadly, the pictures dont do it justice... it looks awesome in person! I'm starting to get stoked about putting life in it and getting to drive it around! Even better, the sale of it :( will be funding my SAS and V8 swap :xcrazy:

Made some more progress with the Runner this weekend. Got some rims and tires installed... and got the tranny and transfer installed. Next up is clutch parts (replace the master and slave cylinders) then finish up any front wiring replacement and repairs, then install new clutch on the motor and install the motor, then driveshafts, then front axle, then brakes, then its time to drive! Heres some pics of the rims and tires. Right now I'm hoping to have it driveable by the middle of the month...

Update time again... It now has a motor and tranny with a new clutch out of my personal rig... I hate to give up my motor (its been really good to me), but I'm makin room for a V8. I havent gotten to starting it yet, but its 90% there. I've still got to throw a starter on it, connect the fuel line, put some gas in it, and it should be good. Then its time for a brake and clutch bleed and a test drive. I'm hoping to be driving it by Wednesday.
