View Full Version : Fitting 39.5" Iroks on a 4Runner

Yup, I'm stepping up to 40's :D My brother-in-law is picking up a used set for me tonight. I got a great deal on them. The downside, I'm going to have to trim an S-LOAD of sheetmetal to make them fit

Here's rig on 33's
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r101/allanedavis/OCG%20Nov%2007/AarononRockGardenpic5.jpg

The rear tires rub like crazy since I extended the wheelbase 4 inches in the rear when I installed the rear springs. I'm guessing I will need to cut 6+ inches of sheetmetal on the quarterpanel (which will put it half-way up between the fender opening and the hardtop  )

On the front, I will have to trim the fenders and hammer down the pinch seam on the firewall. If it still rubs, the BFH will pound the firewall back a couple of inches. If that doesn't work, I'll cut out the sheetmetal and reweld new sheetmetal several inches into the cab.

I also will be upgrading the knuckle studs to the ARP verisons. I will also need to buy Bobby Long's cromo hub gears to make sure my 30 spline Longfield warranty will work if I break a Longfield (doubt it). I might also upgrade the hub studs to ARP's and add some extra dowel pins in the wheel hubs and Aisin hubs.

I should have gotten my R&P cryo'd when I built the axles last winter but I didn't. I'm going to use the skinny pedal with care

Should be fun gaining 4" under the diffs

Yeah, the quarterpanels will pretty much just be skins. I will probably have to build a frame to hold them so they won't flap in the wind. I should just bob it and dove tail it but I want to keep the hardtop for my 2.5 year old daughter when she goes with me.

I'll document the sawzall action :D

Have you thought about cutting the wheel well out flush to the back, like the "comp cut" jeeps.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/Mythica/Volcoms4runner.jpg I suck at painting :(

You could build the frame you are talking about to attach the skins too.

As far as the tail gate you should be able to angle the cut back to the bottom of the tail gate. My brother and i have tossed this same idea around for his bronco, at one point we had it all blue taped up.

Or you could chop the tail gate down too, so the cut is the same width all the way around the truck, it would take some work to get the hinges to line up, but it would look so awesome.

RedRunnertc
01-24-2008, 09:05 PM
The big issue I see with that cut is what to do with the tail/brake lights since I don't think Volcom has a tow rig/trailer.

I have tons of great ideas but with limited money and a truck that doesnt want mods just to be repaierd over and over it sucks..Goes in to the 3rd cooling system in a year.

Mythica
01-24-2008, 11:30 PM
Yeah get some round led's and put them in the tail gate. They arnt very deep, so they should fit (i have never seen the tail gate width on these trucks)

Most 18 wheelers have round leds so you can get them from truck supply shops fairly easy.

But that idea above, is abit complex. It would leave the under side of the truck open for road trash. So you would actually need to form some fender wells out of some thin stock to close it off. But it would look very kool!!!

escpecially if he keeps the top on.

vwfastg60
01-25-2008, 05:47 AM
the wheel wells are not hard. Sean's Zuk has em and they simple and square. Dont leak water or air.

Volcom
01-25-2008, 08:11 AM
Thanks for the ideas. I will probably just widen and increase the height of the wheelwell for now. I like the comp cut idea but it might look weird with the tailgate (unless I cut up the tailgate as well).

I trailered my 4Runner for every trip last summer except for a trip to Medano/Blanca. I think that will be the case again this summer if I can borrow my dad's CTD and trailer. I need to save up some money and buy my own tow rig and trailer.

Went out today and borrowed a forklift to try and figure out how much triming it's going to take to fit the 40's

http://www.volcom.arlojeep.com/tires/021.JPG
Picking up the rear to flex out the front springs. We were able to pick up the left rear tire 31" before the right rear would lift off of the ground. Not bad for a leaf sprung truck!

http://www.volcom.arlojeep.com/tires/022.JPG
There was only 2" of clearance between the pinch seam and the tire. I will need about 5 more inches of clearance for the larger tires. I plan on lowering the bumpstop and maybe moving the axle forward an inch by drilling the spring perches and U-bolt plates.

http://www.volcom.arlojeep.com/tires/023.JPG
I took the rear gate off to make it easier to work on the truck. I also have an extra tailgate thanks to a friend of mine to replace my BV dented one :D

http://www.volcom.arlojeep.com/tires/024.JPG
Hard rubbing on the passenger rear tire. I will need 5" of clearance back here also. I will probably trim between the two lines on the quarter panel.

http://www.volcom.arlojeep.com/tires/025.JPG
Flex shot, pretty stable even at that angle.

http://www.volcom.arlojeep.com/tires/026.JPG
Nice forklift and the big tire to try and fit

http://www.volcom.arlojeep.com/tires/027.JPG

http://www.volcom.arlojeep.com/tires/028.JPG
Picking up the front to flex the rear springs. I was able to lift the front tire 27" before picking up the passenger side tire.

Say goodbye to the front fenders

http://www.volcom.arlojeep.com/tires/030.JPG

It's geared at 5.29's with a dual ultimate crawler (10.8 to 1 low range) so the off-road gearing will be perfect. On road, let's just say I don't plan on winning any speed contests :D

I trailered it 95% of the time last year. One trip from Pueblo to Medano to Blanca and back without the trailer. It wasn't bad.

Not quite a breeze but do-able. I have more rear flex then he does (at least what is shown in these 2 pics and looking at the rear tire almost touching in pic 1) so I had to trim up the quarter panel higher. He did have to trim more front to back which would be tough as well.

It doesn't really need to be centered. The arc of the wheel when it flexes will keep it away from that front portion. I probably gain 2" of wheelbase when the rear tire is stuffed.

Rear tire barely kisses the frame rail at full flex. Nothing to worry about.

http://www.rockfrogs.org/Pictures/AE/rear-trim/023.JPG
I took the fender off to get a better idea of how much rubbing the front was going to have on the firewall rather than on the fender itself (I can trim the fender back later).

This was at full stuff with the bumpstop fully mashed with a level spring. It was rubbing at full turn to the driver's side. I plan on lowering the front bumpstops down an inch and trimming that pinch seam on the firewall for now. I will still have decent compression travel but am limiting it compared to when I ran the 33's.

I would SO be tubbing the firewall ... IMHO 1" compression travel = 10" droop travel ...

Most rigs when running this size tire don't have massive amounts of compression travel. Most people set them up to have 3" of compression travel and as much droop as possible. I agree that tubbing the firewall would be a benefit but I doubt I'll be doing it this year. It will probably be next winter's project, I want to get this thing rolling and out wheeling.

I don't agree with the 1" compression to 10" of droop. I don't really see where you are getting that ratio and it's benefits

Volcom
03-20-2008, 03:45 PM
Crossing my fingers that I get to work on patching some holes up this Saturday. If I have time, I might even tub the firewall this year rather than wait until next winter's project. We'll see.

I also am upgrading bumpstops to run a poor man's airbump. I finally figured out how I'm going to add them and make them work with the limited space on the narrow Toyota axle.

Should be a productive weekend of :saw: and :welder:

Maybe it's just cuz it's so cool that I want to see it finished, but this project is taking FOREVER! :D

As for the 10:1, I kinda made that up as round numbers, but here's the thinking:

When you run out of compression, that side of the truck is going up, period. More often than not, with the soft springs we like to run, the opposite rear will compress, and the truck gets tippy. NOW if you have more compression travel, you don't have quite the leverage to compress the opposite rear, the truck stays level. Of course, the other thing to consider is that you need more clearance for compression, and that means either raising the truck (higher center of gravity), narrowing the body or widening the axles (may cause legality issues on street driven rigs), so compression is more difficult to get than droop, so a lot of people take the easy way out and bias their suspension for droop.

Lemme ask you this - your avatar shows massive droop while smokin crack on Golden Spike. Would the truck be any less stable if that wheel wasn't down in the Golden Crack? Nope, not a bit, as it is being fuly supported by the other three springs.

Got a ton of work done Saturday thanks to CuBuff4Runner!!

I ended up working on tubbing the firewall with Jeff while my brother, dad, and other buddy worked on making some 16ga. sheetmetal tubs for the rear.

Big hole from the inside. It's cut back all the way to the body mount.

http://www.volcom.arlojeep.com/front-trim/003.JPG
After welding in the replacement sheetmetal. I hate welding sheetmetal after this project (first time welding sheetmetal). CuBuff4Runner was much better at it then I was.

I will seam seal both the inside and outside welds. Then I will shoot some rubberized coating on the outside and herculine the inside.

http://www.volcom.arlojeep.com/front-trim/004.JPG
Inside driver's side. I will need to remount the fuse block. Welds look like goose sh!t but it doesn't matter what they look like under seam sealer and herculiner :D

http://www.volcom.arlojeep.com/front-trim/005.JPG
Passenger side inside. I will relocate the computer into the glove box.

http://www.volcom.arlojeep.com/front-trim/006.JPG
Passenger side outside. We tried a different method from the drivers side and it cut the fab time in half. Once again, seam sealed and covered up with some kind of liner will hide the ugly (plus make it water proof).

It was a tough job but I'm glad it's done. Will be nice not to have the front tires rub on the firewall while flexed out and turning.

http://www.volcom.arlojeep.com/front-trim/007.JPG
Here's a rear tub that my brother, dad, and friend cut and rolled up. Turned out perfect and will fit and weld right into the quarter panel. :welder:

Yup, I'll post up pics of them when I get them built. Here's the thread on Pirate that gave me the idea
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=347598&highlight=Timbren+bumps

and the Timbren website
http://www.timbren.com/

They are mostly used for load leveling heavy loads on big trucks. But they seem to do a decent job as an "air bump". They aren't really air bumps but soft bumpstops that compress more than your standard rubber bumpstops.

I still need to trim the front fenders, seam seal all welded areas, redo my bumpstops, replace my bent tie rod for a straight one, adjust my hydro assist, drain and refill the t-cases, swap all the guts in my bent up tailgate into a new gate, and hurculine the tub of the 4Runner.

Thanks man.

I like the idea of those. So do you know which ones you are going to try first? They seem to have a lot of options.

My brother bought the A155-65's. They are tiny and only take 600 lbs to compress to 7/8" tall (from 2 1/8") giving me 1 1/4" of compressible bumpstop. He felt they were too small to run on his YJ and gave them to me to try. He ended up buying a double convoluted spring but I'm not sure which one he bought.

If these are too small and compress to easily, I can order up another set (probably the double convoluted A515-55 or A515-65's).

I was wondering what weight range to shoot for.

Yours will probably be done before i am ready to mess with bumps, so let me know what you think.

Thanks

Not lately :(

My month of April is pretty much booked every weekend. The longest time I get to spend in the garage is to throw away the trash

I'm guessing it will be the beginning of May before I get it built back up and running.

Big thanks to my brother and Jeff (CuBuff4Runner) for the help on Saturday. We got quite a bit done and finally got to mount all 4 tires and actually take it for a drive.

Sorry for the pictures, I had to turn the lightening way up to see the contrast between the tires and trucks.

There are quite a few differences in our trucks even though they sit almost as tall as each other. Notice the rear shackle height difference (frame on the 84 stays high where the 96 dips down after the wheel)

http://www.volcom.rockfrogs.org/40-Iroks/005.JPG
Headlights are almost the same height but the top of the cab is higher on the 84 by a couple of inches.

13" of clearance under the front diff on the 84 :D

Driver's side inner 16 ga.tub. It's fully welded. Just needs some seal seal and Hurculiner on it to make it water-proof inside.

http://www.volcom.rockfrogs.org/40-Iroks/011.JPG
I still have some welding on this side. We really wanted to get it out for a test drive so I'll finish up the welding at a later day.

http://www.volcom.rockfrogs.org/40-Iroks/012.JPG
Driver's side inner. I think the new tubs came out really well. They are strong also. I could stand on them on the inside and no flex at all.

CuBuff's new beadlock wheels. He's got such a badass 3rd Gen!

http://www.volcom.rockfrogs.org/40-Iroks/014.JPG
He's really to rock this summer!!

Driving impressions - I knew it was going to be slow. Let's put it this way, I wasn't let down :D It's pretty slow. I don't think I'll ever use 5th gear. 4th gear was pretty much just holding speed, no accleration at all in 4th. 3rd gear and 4K rpm (I'm guessing) was around 55 mph. The truck drove great with these tires (not even balanced yet). Ride was nice and smooth and the brakes seemed to slow it down good enough.

I'm still glad I chose the 40's rather than 35-37's. I would have still just as much work making them fit in the rear quarterpanel.

Next up, seam seal and undercoat / hurculine the rear tubs and trim the front fenders. I also need to work on my hydro assist mounts and fab up some new bumpstops.

Feels great getting it out the garage and finally into a trail with some rear tires :D

Hey, where'd your fenders go? get tired of :saw:

Ran out of time to trim them before the trip. I didn't feel like tearing up both fenders and trashing the front tires for one trip. The easy way out is to unbolt :)

I usually run without doors but I had my 3 year old daughter out for her first trip. I feel safer with some doors between her and the rocks. Just me, doors are left on the trailer ;)

Thanks for the nice words about the truck. It's been a long 2+ years building it and it's still really far from being done (if ever :D )

I really hope to catch up with some of you this summer and get some wheeling in.
