Ok...I think at this point those of you who care remember the cage I had done elsewhere, and the ensuing shitstorm both on here and DR about the design and whatnot. This thread is NOT the place to talk about it, PLEASE. Let's just say I decided I wanted to take a different approach to my truck (which is true) and as a result, am getting it re-caged.
End of story.
The truck is being caged essentially from the dashboard to the rear bumper, with a cab cage, fiberwerx dash and console, bed cage, fuel cell, 62" Deavers, 3-tube 16" kings, and dual spares.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Here are a couple more from the progress today. The cab cage is about 75% done, now we just have to mount the seats, dash and harness bars.

update
Here are a couple more pictures as of today. The cab cage is about 90% done. Basically all we have to do in the cab is patch up the holes in the floor then put the seat tubes back in. The bedcage is about 50% done and should be done within the next few days. I'll post up more pictures tomorrow night.

The cage is only as strong as what it is tied to. If it's tied to flimsy c-channel, it will bend or break.

Not neccessarily true, if it's designed right the cage will provide the rigidity that the c-frame lacks. You even see some linked trucks without boxed frames.

Might just be boxed where the shackle pivot it so it doesn't flex.
socalmoto
03-11-2008, 02:07 PM
The rear frame section does not need to be completely boxed, but does need local boxing. A c-channel, with the same thicknesses as a boxed section, will provide the same resistance to bending as a boxed section. But where the cage intersects the frame, the top plate will locally bend downward and so it will needed to be boxed at that point. The c-channel does not resist twisting even close to that of the boxed section, and so the cage should be built to make up for that lack of strength
From the looks of the picture the end of the frame is probably boxed for the shackle pivots, as shorty said, and to weld the bumper to. The rest of the cage points look like they hit the frame where it is already boxed from the factory. Great looking cage work inside too.

The bedcage is about 85% done. All we have to do now is plate the top side of the shock mounts and fab something to hold the cell in place. We'll also be adding a custom aluminum box built by CRB right behind the cab. It should be painted by the end of next week.

Just drive within youre abilities and especially your trucks ability. Just cause you have a cage doesnt mean you have to huck the shitt outta it everytime you take it out, to truly "USE" it. LOL Dont let anyone make you think youre some kid that doesnt "need" or "use" his truck...cause in the end theyre the guys that end up with the haggard beat to shit trucks.

To back Jonny up on this one, I'm going to be doing my own silicone sealant with dynamat over it (and carpet later). Jonny and Andy offered to do it, but I said I had the stuff at home, and that I didn't mind doing it at all.

What thickness is that plate that connects the cab to the cage along the sides of the windshield? Ideally do you want to do that in as many places as possible, or just here and there to stiffen things up? Just tryin to get some info for when i start my cage in june. thanks.:)
Oh ya, looking good btw! :D

So I had to run down and drop something off at the shop yesterday, and let me just say, my truck is looking ridiculously awesome. I completely forgot to bring a camera, but Jonny is aiming to have the the truck done and gone by FRIDAY! So I should have pics then. After I get the truck back, its dynamat, dynamat, dynamat time, with a side of new tires and sound system install, then I can finally take it out!
I think it is pretty clear that I'm ridiculously excited.

your truck looks amazing, i like the dash you got in there, are you goin to be retianing the AC system? and also much did they weld the plates on the A,B, & C pilliars to the cab to solid mount it, or did they put solid body mounts in and just weld the plates in from the body line to the top of the cab?? any pics would be awsome.

Well...sorry to juke everybody (Jonny included, with whom I just finished texting) but I won't be doing the Richer Racing front kit. :( Sorry Brock! Evaluating my current financial situation, I realize it makes more sense to do a few other things to the truck, for a bit less money. Race kit some day, just not right now.
I'll update everybody with the plan after I speak with Jonny sometime between now and Tuesday.

So, intelligent guy that I am...I put the corner lights in AFTER Jonny took these pictures... Also, the interior is messy because I haven't gotten that all squared away yet. Jonny and Mike rebuilt my entire TC kit (including a new upper arm, thanks for the discount Nicole!) and installed a defroster and A/C.
Anyway, on to the fun stuff!
