What is the cheapest/best way to re build a 22re? Im lookin to spruce the old motor up a bit. It broke down on me this morning when it was 25 degrees out. It did what happened in cassville cory. I guess it got real hot and was leaking coolant out of the same spot. I towed it to my uncles house and we got a wrecker to bring it back home. I looked it all over and filled up the water and it fired right up! I put some of that radiator goop back in it and it doesnt leak now. I would like to rebuild it and maybe give it a little more power. What would this cost? How much will it cost for the rebuild kit. Cory what do u think where do u get all your stuff from?

totally ddepends on what you need andrew, if it doesnt need to be bored then you can do it for $500
if it needs to be bored, and most likely does then you'll need $80-100 for the boring and the cost of pistons

I rebuilt a 22re last spring, including bore, new pistons, surface head, all bearings, and fluids, timing chain set, and complete gasket set for like $500. I would assume it would take about $100-150 more now becouse of increased costs, and petrolium product prices. If you do all the work then hire out machine work you could be in under $800, possibly with a new cam. Its possible you may run into more money becouse of worn vale train, seals and the like, just cross your fingers and hope for the best, couse it can add up quick if you have to start replacing parts like the valves, or the head.

Andrew, most of my stuff I've used I've had in stock... pleasure of having all kinds of toyota stuff left over.
However on the 85 4Runner build, its going to need bored and such, I was looking at having a local machine shop dip the block to clean it, bore it around 0.030 over. Then I was looking at purchasing this kit:
http://www.toyotacarpart.com/default.asp?p=10
But some more digging found this kit:
http://www.engnbldr.com/Toyota-Hotlicks.htm
Which includes pretty much everything you need. (Pistons, rod bearings, main bearings, rings, freeze plugs, timing set, new oil pump assembly, and a full engine gasket set, and possibly new wrist pins and wrist pin bushings, you need to ask.) Plus you can add a cam and it comes with steel guides for the timing set...
Besides that the only other things left are to have your crank checked, cleaned, and turned as little as possible, have the rods checked and sized, and have your head checked, milled, valves lapped, and new guides/seals installed.
Total Machine work: Block: clean, bore cylinders ~$80
........................... Crank: clean, check, turn ~$50
........................... Rods: check, size ~$25
........................... Head: clean, check, mill, valve work: $75
.................................................. ..... ~$230
Total Parts: Engine Kit + Cam: $307 + $22 Shipping = $329
................ Lube: $4
.................................................. ..... $333
Misc stuff while your at it: Fuel fiter (trust me): $15
................................... Oil Filter (x2): $5 = $10
................................... Oil (x2): $15 = $30
................................... Paint: $10
.................................................. ....$65
Grand Total: About $628 to do it right.
The reason for twice the oil and filters is you need to change the oil at 500 miles.
Also, you gotta do all your machine work first, before ordering the engine kit, because you'll need to know what the block was bored out to, and what the crank was turned down to, to get the right sizes of the bearings, pistons, and rings.
Hope that helps.

Well it still runs for now but i was looking into a re build. When i get the turbo truck im gonna be doing some of the above anyways. Im just gonna have to take it easy on her for a while til i can rebuild it. If that means not wheeling it at disney so be it. Im sure i can ride with somebody up there and im a pretty good cameraman/spotter. Looks like a heck of a deal that rebuild kit Cory, orileys wants 425 and im not even sure thas as complete as the kit mentioned. I talked to the mexicans and he said it would be a grand easily. I didnt think so.

Ya i thought it was a good deal. also like glen said, you may not even need to bore the cylinders, a good hone might do it, and that would save ya a little too. I'm just overly cautious and go the extra mile on my personal motors, mainly cause i expect them to last at least 200K.

It's a 22RE, it's built to last forever, not get there the quickest. A header and cam is probably your best bet. And get your injectors cleaned and flow tested.

Agreed. I can dig up the contact of the recommended place for injectors if need be.
If you had money to spare and really wanted a lot more power, you have two choices, engine swap to something else, or a supercharger.
You can see my info page for swaps:
