View Full Version : Cut exhaust, is that legal in AZ?

Well, i threw on a super sweet lift on my taco this weekend (icon + deaver 8-leafs) and now the exhaust pipe is getting whacked by the shackle while flexing - see pic below. I've seen pictures of tacos with the exhaust pipe hacked off a foot or two back.
So then, is that legal in AZ? This is my daily driver... I'm not really worried about getting pulled over for it but I wonder what happens when I have to take it to emissions....
Any suggestions?

And heres a couple pics of the truck out in the Gila River basin today. I saved up for a long time to get this lift and tire package and oh man, SO WORTH it!! :D :D :D :D :D :D

After 2000 they no longer do the exhaust readings. They plug into your OBD2 port and go from there, that will tell them everythhing they need to know about how your rig is running. No smog required. (Uriel, correct me if I am wrong on this one)

1996 and newer don't matter where the exhaust is located when it comes to emissions.Your truck recieves an OBD2 test...Looks good BTW!
Be prepared for a slight increase in resonance and noise. Mine is so loud, it gives me a headache after a two hour drive.

X2 on the cool looking pics.
put the exhaust up over the frame and dump out before the rear tire, keeps it away from rocks

I had the pipe re-routed above the leaf spring and it dumps behind the rear tire parallel to the frame. That was still a bit annoying w/ the FlowMaster 50 series, so I added a turnout and it's just fine. I've got great rear flex, and even at full stuff the pipe is well clear of the spring.

I had mine tesed 2 weeks ago and had no issue. Mine is cut. And mine isn't loud either.

So wmcwilli, you can confirm that they don't use the exhaust probe on newer models?

Register it and Yuma then you have no emmisions.
:D
I cut my exhaust right where before it turns to point outwards. Works good, it also makes it sound a bit different.

Chopped mine a few weeks back. No noise difference and no problems at emmisions last week. I have a 96 and they just clip it in to the obd thing.

there are two bolts holding the top hanger to the frame, take them out push it down and put one bolt through the top hole on the hanger and the bottom hole on the frame this will give you some extra space till you feel like :saw:

Even with the older ones, they didn't care. Mine's a '95 but has OBD II, so it still gets the tailpipe test. Mine was cut above the axle, and it went through just fine.
