: how to tell difference between 22r 22re

I have a 85 toyota that i believe is a 22re motor but it is carbed... The valve cover says 22re but people say if its 22re it has to be F.I. Is there a way to tell the difference such as different oil filters? Vin numbers on block?

:confused: 22r=carb-----22re=fuel rail.
Get a propane kit and you'll have better than both!

Somebody probly through a 22re valve cover on there at some point...I believe they are interchangeable...like bray said, 22r=carb, 22re=EFI

or a sticker. Marlin sells them for 3 bucks.

well is there a difference in oil filters? cause i think a 22re has a smaller style oil filter and 22r has a bigger oil filter can anyone verify this?

Look to be the same

I believe they are very different...

The oil filters could be the same, it depends on the year but if there is a carb it is a 22r. it is not possible and rediculous to put a carb on a fuel injected model.

Oh I wouldn't say that

... rediculous...

That, I would say.

I donít see the sarcastic smilie( :rolleyes: ), but Iím pretty sure you were being sarcastic.

For 22r series(i.e. 22r, 22re, 22ret)
83-84 blocks are shorter than 85-95 blocks.

83-84 heads do not mate to FI intakes

Most 85-95 heads mate to both FI and carb intakes

FI and carb cams are different

All 22r and 22re oil filters are the same

22ret oil filters differ

That is to the best of my knowledge the major differences in the engine department, and yes I have an 83 truck that has an 85+ engine with carb and an 85 4runner with a 22re, so I have compared the two quite a bit.

so how do i ultimately tell? I believe it is a 22r because my info tag in my engine bay says 22r and the computer says 22r on it also.

Not really sure what you are asking. Everyone is saying the same thing:

22R = Carb
22RE = FI
22RET = Turbo

engine blocks vary only by what I mentioned on top,

So you have a 1985 22R motor because it is carburated. Which uses the same oil filter as a 22RE because 22R and 22RE motors use the same filter. What other question are you asking?

Toyota has streamlined the same oil filter across the line-up for the
20r,22r , 3vz, 2rz, 3rz, 5vz engines-

so how do i ultimately tell? I believe it is a 22r because my info tag in my engine bay says 22r and the computer says 22r on it also.

OK so it has a carb, plate says 22r......If it walks like & duck & talks like a duck......

If it has a carb. on it. it is a 22r. If it has a throttle body on it ,it is a 22re. If it has a throttle body and a turbo on it, it is a 22ret. It is that simple. Don't know any other way to say it. :confused:

Let me see if I can clarify this for you.

22R

22RE

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h116/Hellbent71/22re.jpg

Notice the big difference of that round thing on the top of the motor in the first pic and the lack of said round thing in the second pic that is the easist way to tell. Hope this answers all of your questions.:D Sorry if one of these pics are yours and you don't want it posted here. Send me a pm if you want it removed.

Oh, oh, I know this one, I know this one. Don't tell me.... um if it has a beak, it waddles, and it has a tag with "DUCK" printed on it,... I think its a Duck,... oh I give up, how can I tell for sure what it is?

Okay Im not a fucking dumb ass... Btw mine must have the 22re valve cover hence my confusion cause my valve cover looks exactly like the one in the second picture. I know what a carb looks like.

yup as dougtrd said:

Thats what must have happened. With vehicles this old, you never know what the previous owners have done. I kept ordering stuff for an 83 22R motor until I realized it has a newer 85+ 22R motor in it. I would have never what it was had I not needed a new timing chain. Now I know what motor to order parts for.

Not saying you are. But why the question in the first post I quoted? The valve cover doesn't make a bit of difference. My 86 that I used to have the same valve cover as yours but said 22R on it. Your valve cover may have been changed or some one put a different sticker on it as was said before. You can buy them here http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/stickers.htm

Okay but you were still coming off as a smart ass :flipoff4:

My 85 doesn't have the smog fittings on the manifold like that 84 did either.

You have a 22r with what looks like a 22re valve cover, thus why you have had so much confusion

if your so smart carb = 22r fuel injected = 22re turbo=22ret its not rocket science you have to look at the intake not the exhaust

Man, I posted part of that and I wasn't thinking you were a dumbass at all. I was just giving out info to tell the difference. It does (after you posted pics) look like a 22re valve cover or just simply a stupid sticker. I wouldn't know the difference in those, so you see that I'm no expert. Why does these threads have to evolve to such flaming? It's kinda rediculous.

Sorry dude, didnt mean to offend you, All I was saying is that the answer has been given, its obvious which motor this guy has, and even the explanation of why we say it is what it is...and yet the questions keep coming so we can re-state whats already in the thread:confused:

OK, drivers side of the block lower front pad will say either 22R or 22RE.
