Seen lots of info on the national board, wanted to see what the locals are using. What GPS are you using and what do like/dislike about it. Mainly asking about for the truck/trail type, but it seems like some are good for hiking too. What's your take?;)

Garmin Etrex works fine for me. Sportsman's has a sale on them you get the software and the car kit for like 160 or something like that.
It's a hand held with a serial cable that you can sync with your computer and analyze your trip.
It's great for hiking and marking your fav. fishing/camping spots so you don't have to do the "where was that lake again" thingy with the wife.
I also saw one on Troy's dash at Bunce School Road maybe he could chime in about it.

Mine is a super cheapie Etrex I think. I don't have any maps in it, so it's more like a super compass than what you may be looking at. I mark waypoints so I can backtrack, and the new Well's guides give the coordinates so I can compare with that.

I also have the cheap Etrex, but the new "high sensitivity" model.
It'll get a fix inside my ground floor apartment!
The Garmin maps have enough resolution for 4x4x trail riding, but not enough for backpacking, IMO.
Since I need a paper map anyway, the more expensive models did not wind my clock.

I don't really like the map software but it works for wheeling and getting you close enough to find what you are looking for.

Mio C220.... Used $50 with cables and mounts. Pretty damn nice. Havent trail used it yet. I do like the fact I can search 4wd trails in the approximate area and it will direct me to them. Not bad unit for entry level.

i got a jensen... it was fairly cheap and it mounts to my dash... i havnt had a problem with it... except for the one and only time its fucked up... it told me to go down this bike path my truck could barely go down, then it told me to go through someones property, it was 3am and the place where we stopped there was a bunch of abandoned houses and there was one shack that had saws and stuff hanging all rusty and stuff, and the wind was blowing so it was all moving and shit... it felt like something outta a horror movie!!! esp when we tried to go back to my truck... well i left my daylighters and hellas on as well as my headlights, so we are walking back and cant see anything except go towards the light!!! lol but ya that was fun... even got a vid of it, but its on my friends camera, ill see if i cant post it up some time... but that was taken the next day on the way back during the day

Garmin wrist thinger...pretty much just use it for location, velocity and altitude, and then get location on a paper map marked in UTM coords.

Etrex legend (blue one). I don't use it that much but I have all the maps on a disc. I might try to download them and use it more this summer.

I just bought a Garmin Rino at work. Used it this weekend. The mic or the modulation circuit was really bad. Sent it in to Garmin today. (Cost me $32 just to send it FedEx insured.)
Supposed to get it back in 12 days, which seems like a long time. Can't I buy ANYTHING that works? :missingto

I have a garmin etrex venture hc.
Pros:The unit inexpensive $160 and works very well, accurate to about 10 feet. I use it for geocaching with my kids when we go camping or wheeling it works great for this purpose because its a hand held and can leave the car.
Cons: The unit comes with a very weak base map that will need to be upgraded with topos for any offroading ($100).
It uses a satellite compass that is only accurate if you are moving... the more expensive units have a geomagnetic compass... but for the price I'll just keep a small compass handy.
The Garmin website has a comparison feature that I found very useful.
There is also a good thread on the national board
