I recently did the timing belt and water pump on my 4Runner. Put everything back together and it fired up the first time. The next morning it took quite a while to start it while it was cold. We got it to start and once it had warmed up it would start up fine. Every time its cold it starts fine the first time, runs briefly, then stalls. After the first start it doesn't start NEAR as easily.
With the diagnostic plug bridged and the timing set correctly it has no power. It barely accelerates at low RPM and above 3k it won't even accelerate. The EGR intake tube (I think??) makes a very loud pulsing noise and sucks a lot of air until it has warmed up. Not sure if this is related, but recently I did a cold air intake on it and have been getting 10mpg. (Not sure if any of these are related) I've been working with my Dad and Grandpa on this and they are at a loss at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Jesse

Sounds like the cam timing is off. Your belt came with marks on the belt labled left and right. What side of the engine is right, passenger or drivers side?

My knowledge is very limited here so I'm just going off of the family knowledge. I was told driver side is left. We lined up the cam marks and the crankshaft tick at TDC, held the tensioner tight, and cranked everything over. The marks came back to be lined up exactly and we put the tensioner on. I highly doubt the belt slipped a cog... but...

Pulled the plastic cover off of the top to double check timing. Turned the crankshaft pulley over to 0* ignition timing (as FSM says is the same as the CR mark pointing straight up) and both camshaft marks were spot on. The timing belt cam marks were also spot on.
Any other ideas? Thanks

The PAIR valve should not be causing any ittues as it is unmetered air (thing making noise under the intake manifold on the passenger side). It's air supply should be plumbed in pre airflow meter (bigger steel pipe coming from under the intake manifold on the driver side). Make sure you don't have any issues with air leaks after the airflow meter.
Your issues started after the timing belt? The next day/time you tried to start it?

I put a new separate filter over the air supply for the PAIR valve so its hooked up in the factory way (before the AFM).
I found a small vacuum hose (for the FPU) disconnected this morning, it changed nothing. Issues started after the timing belt. The first time it started it fired right up and ran at 2k RPM for quite a while. (I'm assuming because the coolant had to flow through it) Next morning it took a long time to crank over and start. We cranked it for a while and got it started. Once it was done "lumbering along" it sounded pretty nice. We ran it for a minute or two, shut it off, and it started back up nicely. The key here seems to be that it will not start if it has been sitting for several hours. A compression test yielded 90psi on 2 of the cylinders. Another observation is that a lot of things smell like fuel.

Finally got it working again and it probably runs the best it ever has.
Not exactly sure what ended up resolving the problem but I figured I would post the process. - Cleaned several of the plugs - Replaced Fuel Filter - Replaced Timing Belt Tensioner (Don't think the old one was behaving quite right) - Cleaned TB and adjusted TPS After all this the ignition timing was WAY off. Set it back to 10-12* and it runs great. Pulls better throughout the power band and a lot better above 4k.
