Talking The SiRMarlon Crawler!

Well it's official...I picked up a 1984 Toyota 4Runner today. Ralph (Wildhorse1969), my brother Denny (Dtrujillo63), and myself headed out to west LA to check it out...here are the specs.

1984 Toyota 4Runner
Rebuilt 22R
Weber 32/36 Tuned Carb
Downey Off-Road Headers
5.29 Gears F&R
Detroit Lockers F&R
All Pro Chromoly Birfields
4Runner V6 rear axle (wider track)
1.5" Spacers up front to match the rear
IFS Calipers and LC Vented Rotors
SS Brake lines all around

I will take some better shots tomorrow...the passenger side body is a little rough, it needs new fenders and I need a switch for the rear power window, little misc things that need to get taken care of. Here is how it sits in my backyard as of tonight...

First Mod is going to be a 2M radio so if my Junk ever breaks down I can reach one of the TWA members! The plan is to build it so we can run trails in the hammers area

It brings me back to our '04 Rubicon trip with captkirk swearing at his Thornbirds the entire trip, LOL It didn't seem to matter what psi he ran..they simply refused to get grip...on anything.

hmmmm...you need new spacers up front. You need 1.5" spacers, not 2.5"
your front track is wider than the rear

did you steal Chris Geiger's avatar?

edit: looks like a great base for a project, have fun

Cool rig! I'm sure your list is long, but if it were mine, I'd start at getting rid of the push-pull steering! ...and the spacers....and the tires.... and the... LOL!

Enjoy the project!

wider track up front has some advantages...whatever you can squeeze through with the front will be a breeze for the rear
I'm 3" wider up front.

I don't know who Chris Geiger is so probably not, and it's def a great base at a great price it's the reason I bought it. Does it need work yeah it does...

I was going to take them off but the previous owner welded the sucker on so I gotta find a cutting wheel to get the weld offs...What I will most likely do this weekend!

Any idea's? This is my 1st SA truck so I'm learning it's characteristics...it is wobbling around 35mph so I have to figure that one out as well. I'm gonna try rotating the tires this weekend so see if that helps, if not then I gotta start checking all the other things like the wheel bearings...

Hytenor, if were "steering" (pun intended) him away from Trail gear stuff, you mentioned inchworm for a high steer.. But isn't the kit that inchworm sells the same one that TG makes..?

http://www.inchwormgear.com/store/pr...roducts_id=944

http://www.trail-gear.com/high-steer-kits.html

Marlin Ftw!

Oh and iirc chris Geiger is the previous owner / CEO of trail gear.. And apparently he did some stupid shiat.

Marlon, kool truck. Can't wait to see this thing in action..
Just some food for thought, you've seen ralphs truck in action I'm sure.. He's only running a single case with a 4.7 low. Cost effective crawler if you have your heart set on duals though, who am I to stop you. Carry on

I plan on getting the High Steer kit from All Pro, I am also going to be rebuilding the Axles hopefully sometime this week. I've never rebuilt a SA so it's going to be a learning experience! I don't want a 4.7 in a single case because I want the option of having double low's and yeah my heart is set on dual cases! The goal is eventually dual 4.7's

no reason for dual 4.7s with the 22r, none at all...unless you plan on 44s at some point
Jon will take good care of you.
there are plenty of Yota front axle rebuild writeups on Pirate.
the only thing to really remember is to use OE bearings or at least top quality stuff...NOT the Chinese crap (search "white box") the TG sells.

Yeah the crew from All Pro are great to work with! I found a couple of good rebuild threads on Pirate already that I will be using as my guide! I will most likely be ordering the rebuild kit from All Pro or Marlin since I keep hearing he has a bigger nicer seal for the Axles along with new bearings not from TG lol...thanks for the insight Hytenor!

My Oil gauge was not working so I went to the shop today and I grabbed my old one from the CRX and installed it into the 4Runner. I have to order a new sending unit but at least with the gauge I have a better idea of whats going on!

I also took the top off! I need to find me some corner lights for the front so I don't get hassled by the cops.

In this last picture you can see the only part of the truck that has damage...

If you're going to replace the bearings, you can order Timken bearings (IMHO, better quality than the Koyo's that Marlin sells) for about the same price.

You can order the bearings at a local bearing distributor. Since there were none around me, I ordered through www.wbds.com

30304 CM (2) - Trunion Bearings
LM102910 - Race for Wheel Bearing

LM102949 - Race for Wheel Bearing

JLM104948 - Roller for wheel bearing

JLM104910 - Roller for Wheel Bearing

226285 - Seal for brake rotor

Above will complete one side. To do the whole axle, double the qty.

To center the knuckle on the axle, many people just put .4 shims all around, but it does not center and the preload may be off. To center the knuckle, here is the procedure. I made this tool, along with a spare tool. If you want to borrow it, just let me know and we can work something out.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=734345

Also great information can be found here for tearing into the axle.
