I have a 1995.5 Taco with a 2.7 and 5 speed with 264xxx miles on it. Motor and tans have never been touched. I got it from a buddy of mine and he never even changed the timing chain.
My question is, I'm starting to have issues with the trans and was wondering if the trans from a 2.7 can be swapped for one from a 3.4? Or are there a bunch of issues? Thanks in advance, Greg |

Find a w59.

You all need to get your info straight. It can be done, but you need the right combo of bell housing and trans to mate properly.
Marlin used to make a bell housing for this type of application. Now you need to find a newer R155F bell housing. See this post from Big Mike on the Marlin board- http://board.marlincrawler.com/index...086#msg1001086 This just solves the mating issues. Mounting and driveshaft mods may be required depending on several factors. So the easy answer is to just get another W59 trans. It will be far easier and way less expensive to go this route. They are very strong and reliable.

Ok. Thanks.
I have no doubt about their reliability as mine has over 246000mi on it. I'm just having a hard time finding locally at a descent price. I found one from a 6 cyl for $150. |

The V6 models are far easier to find. I recently purchased a W59 trans and transfer for $150, which I considered a really good deal. Just gotta keep looking.

Just to throw this out there - If you are looking to swap out auto transmissions, you can swap the A340 series trans between the 2.7 and 3.4 (Watch for year-to-year compatability) - But just like ShowStop mentioned, you'd need to swap bellhousings and torque converters. And may have some issues with the placement of the dipstick/filler tube.
Now, back to reading up in CV axle replacement

try searching for a trans on www.car-part.com . I recommend filling with Red Line MT90 or similar GL-4 synthetic gear oil and replacing the shifter socket and seat with new ones from marlin crawler. Makes it shift like butter

My opinion is to keep it original & keep the 4-cyl trans in there. As for finding a good used W59 transmission, have you tried Jeff @ Toy Connection (near San Jose, CA - (408) 988-4040) or tried searching wrecking yard databases such as www.car-part.com? If all else fails, we rebuild em and make them bomb proof with a bunch of heavy duty upgrades http://www.marlincrawler.com/transmi...t-complete/w59![]() Best of luck! BigMike

Thanks Mike.
If I weren't 3000 miles away from you, I'd consider bringing it to you. There is also the fact that I have well over 240000miles on it and I only paid $500 for it last year. So I can't see myself spending thousands on it. Slowly but surely I'd like to make it worthy but I have to start with the necessities first. I have checked carparts.com and everything is pretty pricy for the mileage here in Canada |

Might as well go to a local trans shop and buy a rebuild for that price. Side note, the timing chains on the 2.7L's are considered lifetime parts and only need to be replaced when they start making noise, which should be upwards of 300k

Glad to hear that. They are starting to make a little noise now, but with the mileage I have on it, not sure if it's worth opening up???

Are you sure it's not an exhaust leak from the manifold? They are notorious for cracking and will make a ticking sound that would sound similar to a chain. If you need to replace it, get a used exhaust manifold from a 2001-2004 tacoma. They changed from cast iron to a tubular steel style that won't crack, and it's a direct fit.
Check your manifold for a hairline crack right between the two middle runners, that's how mine gave out |
