Default 4XInnovations Tacoma Tube Winch Bumper

Last Weekend (21 - 22 Apr) I went up to 4XInnovations a.k.a. Traxman25's a.k.a. Adam's shop to fabricate a front bumper for my truck.

It took us 2 days (about 20 total shop hours) to get it done, but Adam came through for me once again, and delivered exactly what I wanted!

Adam was very patient with me (going behind him with my tape-measure to double check his every measurement), and tasking me every time he could. He was definitely the brains of the operation doing all the calculations, bending, notching, and welding. He could see that I was chomping at the bit to participate so he gratiously tasked me with cutting, grinding, drilling, and measuring every chance he got.

Day 1:

Reinforcing the front of the frame:

We stole the idea from here:
http://www.nwtoys.com/tech/frame-endcap

Next we had to figure out how to attach the front bumper, and fabricate mounting brackets that utilized stock mounting points:

Main Cross-bar for the winch mount:

DAY 2:

Mocking up the top cross-bar, up tubes, and stinger:

Finishing everything up:

CURRENT:

I have fabricated brackets, and mounted LED turn signals:

I am having the bumper powdercoated later this week.

While the bumper is at powdercoat, I'm going to rattle-can black all the white behind the bumper. I'll be sure to post pics when she's 100% completed.

Ditch those turn signals!! I bought new sockets at Autozone and wired them up to make my park lights double as turn signals. Nice looking bumper!

Na - I like 'em and I'm gonna keep 'em. I thought about the Parking Light mod, but I like this better.

I just need to figure out something better than zip-ties for the License Plate.

HA!

...You know - one of those "last minute hack jobs" was actually welded on there pretty good and deep. 3 of them broke off clean and easy, but the one kicked my ass for a minute.

I just cut out a piece of sheet metal to mount the light to, and then drilled and tapped a couple of holes, so the lights fit in from behind the tubing and are a little recessed (and protected). Came out looking cleaner than I thought.

Looks good; The mounting and cross bracing solution is a great idea. I may have to use that for inspiration when I replace the stock junk. Never was happy with mounting on my old ride.

Looks good, Jamie. Nice and tight on that front end with a killer stinger! I really like those mounts in the reinforced stock locations.

Default Back In Black!

BACK FROM POWDER COAT!

Dropped it off at the shop Wednesday morning - got it back this afternoon. The place put on a double coat of flat black for $90.
Like a sore dick - you can't beat that!

Just a question, dont you think that thing will get pushed up into your grille? Are the only points that it is connected are the 4 tubes to the front crossmember you made. It seems like a blow to either the sides near the fenders or the top of the bumper wouldnt turn out well. Is there more bracign than I see?

I don't forsee it getting pushed back into my grille or radiator. I'd have to hit something EXTREMELY HARD. It's braced and mounted about the same as an ARB bull bar - into the front of the reinforced frame rails. Basically my thoughts are that if I hit something hard enough to cave this bumper, I've got bigger things to worry about than the bumper or grille, and it's still about 100x more protection that the stock tupperware, and it'll hold a winch.

...AND Adam @ 4xInnovations needed to standardize the way it mounted, and wanted to use OEM mounting points, so he can reproduce and sell Tacoma bumpers

What Jamie said... He'd have to fold the frame, 4 inches back from the front (IE behind the body mount) to fold up the bumper. At that point you'll be crushing the rad and fan and a ton of other things just with the body and frame rail (trust me I've done it). I was not worried about the broken rad/alt. ext. as much as I was my separated shoulder (It took 65+ MPH into a concrete wall to do it too, I am not claiming any bumper can stand up to that).

There's no way the bumper is gonna fold by mounting points or by construction. I have a little question about how low the tubes for the winch mounts are located. I'm not saying it's bad, It just looks a 'little' low for approach angles. When I installed my winch in my CBI I had to raise my hood and remove my grill to get the winch in the mounting point. This is 'high approach angle'.

That is one cool bumper you have there. Whatever you hit 'loses'.

Default Put to the test

In Moab last week, I definitely put this bumper through its paces.

There were a couple of times that I was a little worried about the approach angle, and that the bumper wasn't going to clear when approaching steep climbs and ledges . . .

Turns out that the approach angle is EXACTLY perfect. It never hit once on an ascent.

As far as it's strength - there was one time when I came down really hard on the bumper (on Moab Rim) and just about the full weight of the front of my truck was on it, and it didn't budge AT ALL. I've got a nice scrape in my powdercoat now, but the bumper held like a stone wall.

  • Spidertrax Aluminum Hawse Fairlead
  • Superwinch Snatch Block
  • 3/8" x 50' Synthetic Viking Trail Line Extension
  • 3/4" Shackle
  • Winchline Recovery Bag
ALL THAT SHIPPED FOR $1064.06

Fits the bumper like a glove. Once again, Adam proves that he knows his shit! When I first sat the winch on the bumper it looked like the holes didn't line up AT ALL ! For a second I felt like I wanted to cry.
But when I swallowed the lump in my throat and put the bolts through it lined up PERFECTLY!

I have 4 KC Titanium Slim-Lites sitting right here, that I'm going to finish off the bumper with later this week - stay tuned.
