Oil leaking on right side of block.

I have a 01 Tacoma with a 3.4L V6. Its got about 196,000 miles. Recently I noticed a musty burning smell on the right side of the block, followed by some oil leaking on the headers. Could it be the head gaskets need replacing or is it something else? If so is this a costly and DIY kind of fix? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Yes a DIY and no not costly.
Just take it slow and grab an air hose to blow off any dust or crap that is laying on the engine, BEFORE, you start the disassembly.
Take photo of your engine from the left, right and front, so it will help you reinstall the placement of the wires.
Or you can host a WAT at your place, supply the food and drinks and I bet there area fellow members in your area that can assist you on the job.
Have fun.

Probably the valve cover gaskets.
I have that issue currently with my 5vz (approx. 150K)
noticed just recently.

the bolts holding my valve covers had also become loose.
I snugged the ones I could reach...
but it's not enough

I believe it is a common issue with the 5vz

factory replacement parts are only about $ 70
but the stealership's labor rate/charge will 5 hours to repair.
* the intake/misc. will need be removed to do properly.

I was quoted $ 630.00 by my local dealership  :(

mine is still leaking slightly...
but the dealership cost makes me realize
I gotta do it myself... eventually

it'll likely get more messy... :shiner:
eventually spotting the driveway.

oil drips attract dust and turn into grime buildup :(

Only real problem I could see...
is if it's leaking badly
and if the block's oil level requirements were ignored.

^ no reason for that unless yaz ignant or lazy ;) :p

my leaks are mostly burning up on the exhaust pipe...
my leakage is minimal at this time
but the burning oil still smells like shit

lately I roll with the fresh air duct closed :(

I'll be making repairs more sooner then later
'cause I dislike dirty/grimy engines.

probably valve cover gaskets as already stated. i had both of mine replaced last march. Had the dealership do it since i needed to have the timing belt and water pump done at same time. Didnt cost a much in labor since they were already in there.
