I figured a 40 would be out of reach for me for a few more years. There are deals to be found on older cruisers and toyotas. The pigs are more expensive to fix up unless you can weld and shape metal pretty good on your own but ive seen a few sell on craigslist for lower than I thought. The rust is so common and been fixed by people before its pretty easy to read up on what you are getting into before had in most cases. Mines in the middle of getting new floor pans and rockers then an axle/knuckle rebuild and it should be in pretty good shape.
When I picked up my 40 I was actually looking for a 01-04 Tacoma to make a fun project vehicle but the prices for Tacomas are terrible. I sold my 01 for 8500 6 years ago and now if I wanted a similar mileage and package its running almost twice that.
I currently run a 1994 KZJ73, 1KZ-T, FRP Top, 111XXX original kilometers. fully compliant HTA (NOT RHD) and like it quite a lot. sSill like driving my 1999 Tacoma a bunch.
I had a 93 fzj80 as a dd for about 4 years and loved it. When I sold it it had skids, sliders, bumpers, tire carrier, 2.5" lift and 37"km2s.
I then bought an 85 fj60 that was 90% done which I still own. 350 ramjet crate, nv4500, atlas2, 14 bolt/kingpin dana 60, and jungle gym shit all around it.
Just finishing up a frame off resto rat mod on a 69 fj40. 76 2f/4spd/one piece case, 60 series pwr steering and tilt column, 60 axles w aussies f/r and 5 29s, soa rear/radius arm and coil front, front axle moved forward 5" rear moved back 4". Bunch of body mods and a roll cage..
I DD a '91 FJ80. She'll pass anything other than a gas station. Scratch that, it won't pass anything period, and she smells kind of funny but is the most reliable vehicle I own.
