Last year I bought a '87 4Runner on 37" tires with 5.29 gears and the speedo was reading faster than I was driving according to my GPS. The odometer was also off the same % as the speed. I have gone down a tire size and am now running 35" tires and of course its now off more.
From what I remember from my last Toy is that 5.29 gears and 35" tires is roughly the same as stock, 4.11 gears and 235 tires. At least that's how it was on the '85 PU that I had. Is there a speedo gear that can be changed to correct the speedometer or is there possibly something wrong with my speedometer? It has the W56 tranny, dual cases with, what I think is the original t-case, as the rear case. FWIW, I'm not sure that the speedometer assy or the drivetrain is the original one. Don't know if that would make a difference. Any thoughts? Thanks |

There's an actual calculator for speedo combined with gear ratios and then tire size. Google it and you will find it. The best and surest way is to take a trip to your local police station and just tell them what's up. I'm pretty sure that they would be willing to gun you and tell you what you are actually going (within 3 at least) and then you can adjust from there.

I guess I should have worded my question better. What I need to know is if you can change speedo sensor gears to correct the speedometer and if there is a Toyota specific guide for that.
I know that my speedometer is off, reading about ~10% fast. |

if you click on the link that I posted first and read that thread, you will find all the info need for changing the speedo GEAR. It is VERY easy. located at the back of the trans directly before the output shaft/driveshaft connection. |

Yes you can and its fairly simple to change. As stated above, the thread on IH8MUD has all the part numbers for the different speedo gears.
