My son just bought a winch. He was also looking at the XRC Smittybuilt. I talked to a salesman at 4wp. He wasn't too keen on them. They used to be built by Mile Marker but now he's not sure who builds them. He made it sound like they got alot of bed ones returned. My son went with the Warn M8000. 4wp matched the price of winch depot w/shipping + tax. My other son has a MM, works OK. (this one is a replacement for a bad one) All of our winches have or will have a main cutoff switch/solenoid. This is what I use.

The reviews I have seen have been OK, but none of them have been written by anyone who wheels as hard as you do.

Personally, I classify winches in the "lifesaving device" category. Kinda like if you're rock climbing, do you use the cheapest rope and anchors you can get? No, you get them from the big names with established history of quality.

There's one other thing ... line speed. With our trucks, and as hard as we wheel, an 8k lb winch is marginal, and you should really be double line pulling on just about any serious stuck. Of course, this cuts the line speed in half. I know we're not in a hurry, but once you use a fast winch, you get spoiled.

Have you looked on Craigslist? You'll defintiely want to switch to synthetic line anyways, so finding a used winch in good condition but with a bad wire rope could be a helluva deal.

It is a rebaged T-Max, it is now a series wound motor and 5.5 hp. Search over in the general 4x4 section of pirate4x4.com. A lot of info on it there

Comparable to the M8000 and the Superwinch. Pretty much mid-pack (not an 8274 but faster than the HF or MM)
