Default Basic 4x4 how to class?

After seeing pics of Roberts tire popped off the rim, I got to thinking that maybe we could go out for a how to class/run one day. We could go over basics skills that we all need to know like how to use a hi-lift safely and correctly, proper winching and recovery skills, getting a tire back on a rim, patching a flat with a tire patch kit, do's and do nots, etc. The more of us that we get competent at with these skills the better we will all be on runs.

To some these may seem simple, but except for the hi-lift, I'd be lost how to do the other skills having never done or seem them done. Whaddayall think?

I think that's an interesting idea but wonder if there are enough members interested in something like that. I know that much larger groups such as Cal4Wheel.com do that sort of thing on a regular basis. Check out their calendar.

You might want to get a copy of a book such as 4-Wheel Freedom by Brad DeLong as a starting point. It covers a lot of the basic stuff you would like to know. It might be available for free at one of the local libraries.

Also you might enjoy the newsletters here:

You could go to a weekend (2 days) adventure at the Dirty Toy School (Toyota Owner Learning Adventure)

It runs around 250 bucks and they will likely be having one in Anza Borrego later this year. http://www.dirtytoyschool.com/

two days of like 3 hours class room + 6 hours trail work each. (8am-ish till past dark). friday night meat and greet (and I do mean meat) happy hours w/swag . I highly recommend being there for this. Saturday Night BBQ or banquet with multiple door prizes given away ( I won a 60" extreme hi lift jack).

1 on 1 instruction for you and you co pilot (should you chose to bring one) with:

Bill Burke - http://www.bb4wa.com/ ( Camel Trophy Winner, I4WDTA Certified Master Trainer et. al)

Chris Nelson - http://www.advanceddrivingsolutions.com/ (Toyota Trails Team Lead Driver 2 years, I4WDTA Certified Trainer et. al)

Dave Logan - http://www.4wdschool.com/ (I4WDTA Certified Trainer, UFWDA 4WD Awareness Instructor et. al)

http://www.i4wdta.org/find-a-certified-4wd-trainer.htm

trail work includes (but not limited to): spotting, overcoming obstacles (in forward and reverse), recovery, managing various terrains, getting more out of lockers, Fun , Fun and much more fun.

all driver experiance levels challenged

Toyota 4WD owner will be having a article on it in the next issue march/april. you might recognize some of the 4x4s in it.

The wife and I went and had an excellent time. we got a heck of a lot out of it and met some really top shelf folks . This is definetly NOT some pansy assed trail ride.

one of the obstacles we overcame at DTS Borrego Springs 12/08

try getting a vid like this one. my problem is or at least with me. i do things my way and they may not be everyones else's right way but i have been doing it so long that way that is the way i do it. so i try not to tell anyone how they should do it. if they ask i will tell them how i do it and it has made some people real upset." thats not how its done" so unless there is a pretty bad situation that can hurt someone or me i just stay silent and let them figure it out. But, and i mean but. if we could all get on the same page it would be nice to practice winching skills or how to use a hi-lift as a winch stuff like that. i would lend my truck and gear if it would help you guys out someway. like i always say i would rather teach you know then than teach you on the trail..

Wow Tim, it almost sounds like you are volunteering to organize a local demo event for us.

I got an extra copy of Burke's getting UNStuck when I went to Borrego Springs. I already had both of the ones he has done. they are chocked full of bunches of good information.

Maybe we can raffle it off at the next winch-a-thon and donate the money to Southern Nevada Trails Fund or somesuch

Default Dirty toy school

I just checked out this site and it says that they have cancelled all classes this year.

I would be interested in a class/run like this

yeah this last year has been the perfect storm for those guys.

Bill Burke www.bb4wa.com is doing many classes this year and hopefully one will be out in Anza Borrego this november.

the best thing I could suggest is jion up with a few clubs and do some runs especially the fun runs which are usually more laid back and less rushed
