I am in the middle of extending the rear diff breather (as soon as the damn part gets here) and I am wondering if I should extend the tranny, transfer case breathers as well? Plus the front diff breather is in the engine conparts ment but is still kinda low (there are 2 of them there, is it 1 for each side of the front end or one of them is something else....one is a smaller diamiter of hose). Can I put a few T's in to get the 4 breathers into 1 line up to the top of the engine compartment or will linking them be a bad thing?

I guess all I am asking is if I can link the tranny, transfer case breathers to the differential breather without screwing something up.

I guess it wouldn't hurt anything. Maybe you can test it for us? I wouldn't do it because you would need alot more hose, fittings, etc. and I can't see where the 'gain' would be. Maybe someone who has thought about this will chime-in Let us know how it goes. |

I dont think linking them will hurt. All the breather does is allow the air inside these parts to expand and contract. I dont think you'll have an air war inside your breather lines.

I connected my two differential breathers together up under the hood, but kept the tranny and t-case separated under the hood. The thinking there is that if you have the tranny and t-case together and you have some leaking seals, you could get cross contamination by either putting t-case fluid in the tranny or visa versa - they will purge fluid if they are ever overfilled or can sometimes while on extreme angles. It's probably more important if you are running an auto tranny and even then probably overkill, but I would rather be safe than sorry considering I have a $3,800 auto tranny and a $2,500 Atlas t-case. I have been using breathers that Summit Racing makes, they are machined from billet aluminum and are very clean - part # SUM-E730310 http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...=egnsearch.asp. I run the 1/8" vents and they work great with 3/8" breather hose and a hose clamp. For the differential Summit has a fuel block that will allow you to thread 3/8" barbed fittings into each end to connect the two diff breather hoses to and the top has an 1/8" threaded tap for the billet breather to thread into.

You can link like-fuild items, such as the diffs and t-case, but keep the tranny on it's own.

I have a 5-speed and am going to use the same fuilds( mobil 1 70-90w...I think that is the one, have to check the Manual again) in all 4 (tranny, transfer case, and differentials). I will take some pics when I do it.

I assume that one of these is the breather for the front diff , but what is the other one to I traced it to a small motor looking thing 123-2350_IMG.JPG.
Or am I just wrong altogether on what these are?

I was just changing my oil and looking at the device in the second picture. It looks like some sensor measuring rotation speed on the passenger side front axle or maybe the ring gear. I dunno.

First of all, I believe that second breather is transmission, although I am not sure, but I heard people say that before - on the internet and at the dealership. I extended all 4 breathers - diff's, transf, transm [having 2003 automatic transmission and add] into my air box. I made a write up too, but it's on my home computer. I'll get to it within a week and can send it to you if you give me your e-mail, or perhaps I can post it in the FAQ section.
Only needed the metal connector for the rear diff, the transfer case already has a breather that is right on top of it - you can reach it with your hand. It's like the brether on the rear diff, but really dam hard to deal with from under the truck, and I couldn't reach it from above by just removing the shifter boot. I pried the cap off it and put on a breather hose (i think 1/2", but I'll have to check), and secured it with a st st hose clamp. Was almost impossible to do that due to lack of space between the floor of the truck and the transfer. Also you might be able to find some info by searching through threads at the tacoma forum on offroad.com website. |

True I didnt consider that. I have the manual tranny and the breather is on top next to the shifter.

my FSM shows some tcases with breather hoses and others w/o them. Mine just has the little breather valve like you see on the rear diff. A second valve is next to it that I assumed went to the tranny but no valves or breather hoses are shown in the FSM ('00) I only have one front breather hose on the dr side fender coming from the front diff.
MY main concern with running hoses from the tranny/tcase is keeping any sort of dip out of the line. I the hose(s) come off the cases and then dip down before heading up to the engine comp. they can more easily become plugged up as oil comes and goes and then just sits in the low point of the hose. I have my rear diff breather extended to behind the fuel door and have raised the front diff breather to fender level. I may be completely wrong on this, however, LOL W/o a body lift there sure isn't much room above the tranny to play with. besides, if you get into water that's deep enough to force it's way into your tranny or tcase through those top valves you will have a whole bunch of more serious problems

Just to mix it up, my 02 2.7L 4x4 reg. cab has two breathers up in front under the hood on the driver's side fender as well. I'll trace them in the next few days after I pull my speedo gear and install my electric fan setup like TRDOLMAN's.

I can't attach more files, but the rest is pretty much a line going into my airbox. Also there is a VW fuel filter in that line before it comes into the airbox, to make sure no dirt goes into the drivetrain.
