Look it up on youtube and you can get a pretty good idea. I dont think any completely stock vehicles could make it, but it is a moderate trail

Huh? Many ways I would describe Holy Cross, "moderate" is not one of them!

We have dragged open/open and open/LSD rigs up to French Creek. 33's locked both ends and dual cases struggle with the creek crossing. Cleveland Rock, up above the city, is a challenge even for buggies.

At least one locker and sliders is absolutely required, and even then, you're probably going to be holding people back (and/or parking at the Creek and hitching a ride to the city)

Default Moab Oct-Nov

How about Moab again? Melanie and I have decided we can't wait for spring 2010 to go back to the red rock. She wants to take the mountain bike this time and I just want to wheel the place and camp out some more. So we are looking at taking a week somewhere between/around the weekends of Oct 24 and Nov 22, before Thanksgiving. Still undecided on the specific dates, so if anyone wants to go, we can work around your schedule (within that timeframe).

At this point, we only have to finish up a week to ten days of office work for the current field season, bust out a few quick trips to SoCal, and maybe one 2-week project in NV that's still tentative... but that is all we have on our plates until about the end of January. So in a couple weeks we'll be back in the land of the seasonally unemployed (I mean semi-retired). That means more wheelin' trips and Moab is on the list.

If any of you COTTORA peeps are interested in joining us for all or part of this trip, shoot me a PM or post up. All are welcome, of course.

Cheers!

~John & Mel

Prices for what, Molly? Gas/food/beer are the only things we spent money on for the last trip. Oh, you mean hotels/condos, right? Yeah, Mel would probably like that since it'll be cold. But I really feel like camping is part of the trip for me. And the cold doesn't bother me camping unless its Minnesota cold. Might have to think about it. There's a cutoff point where Mel just gets too cold to camp. But normally when we travel in winter we camp and the gear keeps her warm enough. We didn't camp in Minnesota last winter though. That's ridiculously cold up there.

I was thinking it'd be awfully frigid camping for Mel if we put it off until Dec. And I'd worry more about trail conditions in winter than in the fall. But yeah, we should still be out of work and looking for a fun way to pass the time around then. Gonna be playoff season if we go before Christmas, so a hotel might not be a bad way to watch the games. Mel gets grumpy if she misses too many playoff games.

I'd be open to that Troy, particularly if it would mean a better turnout from the COTTORA contingent (anybody else?). Still waiting to hear back on a few other boards, but two guys already posted up they want to go if it can be scheduled the second weekend of Nov. Not sure how serious they are yet. So, I dunno. Give me a week to hear back from the others on the private board and find out how serious they are, when they can get free, etc.

How serious are you about doing Moab this winter? How much time could you get for Moab? A weekend? More? We want to go for a week, plus maybe continue the road trip from there if the truck holds up.

Let me know. PM or e-mail me if you'd like to keep the thread clean..

I'm VERY serious. Best trip I've ever had to Moab was mid-December. Nice, crisp weather - and didn't see another rig, wait in traffic, wait at a restaurant ANYTHING all week.

Hotel runs $29/night

Not me, winter is a bad time. No vacation, no money, etc. enjoy.

BTW John, when Nate, Ike and me went last nov, it was like 11* before the sun hit us.

Thanks Doug. What can I say, I'm addicted to this wheelin' thing. I'll go wheeling in just about any weather at this point. I know, I'd rather go between right now and early Oct while the weather is nicer, when the cottonwoods are changing colors, etc. But between, work, the truck not being done, and not being able to get people interested earlier (not wanting to wheel hard stuff alone) I am sort of at the mercy of these other factors. The two FJC guys on the private forum who wanted to go earlier backed out.

I know I am ready to go back to Moab, and if this is the only time it'll all come together for me, that's when I'm doing it. Should be a fun trip whenever. So its all good. Sorry you can't make it, Doug. Maybe we'll drive on up to the Denver area and try to catch up with you guys for another CB&Potts type of night of debauchery at least. Maybe at a different brewery this time. Though we had a nice evening, Potts didn't have that much selection I thought... and out of the beers they offered I really only found 2 of them palatable. That's fine, one good beer is enough, but part of the fun is trying out a bunch of different brews.

So Troy, Molly and Quick Draw... let us know when works for you guys. If it can be Mid-December Igor can make it up to join us.

Default Update

Been a month since I posted up in this thread so here's the latest... Igor is done with finals on the 16th, so we're talking about driving up to Moab on Dec 17th, '09, and tentatively planning on a week or thereabouts. Mel and I will purposely be on the road somewhere (maybe Moab or the Denver area) for Christmas, as its a good way to avoid her nutso family for the holidays (got roped into Thanksgiving and that is gonna be all we can stand for the year). Some of the details still need to be ironed out, but that's the latest on Moab in case anybody still wants to join in the fun...

Might need to look into a condo rental if we get enough people interested, to make it cost-effective.

Lots of fun wheeling lately out here, with more to come. Martinez Canyon was great! I received my official invitation to the AllPro Tacoma Challenge (they are calling it "Get Hammered" now) to be held out in Johnson Valley this coming weekend. Look for our truck in 4WD Toyota Owner's Mag. and on the official event DVD which will be available through the AllPro website - not for a few months though, I would guess. Igor is setting up a local Halloween day "Mud Springs" run for the next weekend after the Hammers. Desoto Mine Trail with the ExPo guys is the following weekend. Got some other stuff I've been wanting to run as well. The wheeling season is really coming back up around here now that the temps are starting to get more reasonable - summer heat slows things way down. Just looking at the start of the comfortable (weather-wise) wheeling season where we live.

I guess your season up there is slowing down, based on there not being any dates for events after Sept in the first post of this thread. Seasonal trail closures have to be starting by now. Might have to try and jump in on a snow run while we're up there this winter if you guys make any crazy plans for one around the time we're in the neighborhood.

Thats all I've got for now. Hope you're all having fun and getting your winter wheeling rig projects started so we can hit some trails in the spring!
