Started the swap tonight, Russell and I started around 4, and had the cab off and motor ready to come out of my truck when Doug showed up around 6:15.
Doug and i got the cab situated, and everything moved around for some space to work. Got the 2.7 motor mounts cut off my frame (PITA BTW), and the 3.4 mounts cut off the frame section (i have pictures showing the differences, i'll get them posted up Sunday or so, along with all of the others). Cutting the mounts off carefully (to not bend/damage them) was a huge pain in the ass, but I managed to get the task done. After a few more hours of work (and a pinched pinky later), Doug and i got the 3.4 lined up (transfer case x-member is in the same location, but the mount on the 3.4 t-case is wider) and the mounts tacked onto the frame. Tomorrow I'll do the finish welding on the mounts, and get the 3.4 in (should be done by noon), then its onto the cab. The cab is going to have to be notched to fit over the frame rails at the rear section, and the floor pan will have to be tubed to clear the gas tank. Also will have to figure out what I'm going to do for the filler neck so I do not have to run it through the cab. Progress is going good, this is the biggest step. Cutting up the bed, and triangulating the shocks will be the easy work. I have to triangulate the shocks since where the new bed mount will be needs to be on the inside of the frame, right where the passenger shocks bolts to. The tabs are already on my axle, so all I need to do is get a cross member welded in and the degree set on each shock. For now I wont do a u-bolt flip, but it will happen down the road (probably not before moab, but whatever). Just thought I'd post up some basic info, once everything is DONE and I have time to sit down and resize/edit/upload pics I'll get that done, along with all of the info, and step-by-step processes of the actual motor swap, and what needs to be done to the cab. |

it's amazing how easy the 2rz-5vz swap is when you're also swapping the cab. All electrical issues should be void. Doing all this with no cab in the way is like cheating.
I'm afraid I might loose the bet that this can't be done in a weekend. I might have to cut some wires or something today to seal the victory.

Took tons of pictures on Nate's camera...
There's a picture floating around of someone who chopped a 2nd gen runner and went straight down behind the rear seats, and then has a little flatbed. That's pretty much what Nate's creation looks like right now. Got a lot done today: Motor is in and pretty much everything is hooked up. Body is in place, most of the clearancing is done. Mounts are tacked in. Almost all of the body-frame interfacing parts are hooked up (steering, wiring, etc) Still a long ways to go: Weld solid the body mounts Patch holes in the floor required for clearance Figure out the gas tank situation Bleed the brakes, etc.

Almost Out of 9 Lives

Was a full day. I think I turned a wrench. Once...
But We were there for 12 hours. I wish we had been able to get Nate's Gas tank hooked up but we ran into issues with the hard lines when dropping the XCab down.

I would say we are definitely on the downhill side of things.
HUGE thanks to troy, doug, jay, and molly for the help today. As already stated, the 3rz drivetrain belongs to Russ. He is going to be putting it in his truck. Heres a teaser pic. Because I'm too fucking tired to go through and edit all of them... As i said in the other thread, doubt me and i'll prove you wrong. ![]() ![]() ![]() Still a little more to do, but it'll be running/drivable under its own umph tomorrow. |

BTW troy, this the runner you're talking about?
![]() Found the pic buried on my comp, i wont have to tub my cab quite that much. Heres two others i found of SWB frames with ext cabs. Stretched wheel base about 2" ![]() Same wheel base, but the cab itself is shorter on the older trucks.

Good work, Nate. No doubt in my mind, now.Are you staying with white, or are you changing colors? I personally think the black looks great. It kinda looks like one of those trucks thats so modded that it should be SAS'd by now... I definitely like the route you're taking, though. Its unique.

unique is an understatement. I'm looking forward to seeing how he reworks the rear floor for all that clearancing. I know he'll work some magic, just not sure I can visualize what he's describing.
If ever there is an easy way to do a swap, this is it. It is cheating, no 2 ways about it.unplug, unbolt, move, plug it in, bolt it up. The ex-cab on short frame is the hardest part but even that is looking pretty straight forward. He'd be driving it now if only we hadn't misplaced that front gas tank strap. And no, I didn't misplace it to throw him off the pace. Nate, don't forget when you write this up... Things to do with the cab off: hook up P/S lines change diff breather (if needed). What a PITA doing it after the fact. BTW.. are you going to change your damn screen name again?

Wow Nate - incredible! I guess I missed the thread where you were planning to do this. Are you going to keep the (chopped) bed, or just tube it? Seems like a little bit of storage is needed for trips and such?

Looks really good Nate!!!!!!!
I like the black as well. I'm voting VERY strongly that you tube bed the back of that thing. The regular bed will just look silly. JMHO. |

Thanks for the comments.
I plan to keep the black, and just re-paint the bed black after i shorten up the front. Kyle, i feel the same. With how this thing looks i feel it should be bigger (sas, 35's-37's etc.). Isaac, I disagree with the tube bed. If i was bigger (sas, etc.) i would be all over a tube bed. But with how small the truck still is, i want it to look OEM. Like it came from Toyota this way. Getting ready to head up north to do more work on it, give me a ring if you're in the area and have some free time. seven too zero 951 twenty three thirty five |

Yeah, that is the 4Runner pic I was thinking about. They didn't tub it, that's how 4Runners are ... your bed will be about that same size!

Im sure nate will post the rest of the pics from the weekend when its all done. Im Leaving now to go up and help him finish it up and do up the tail light harness. I have to say this is the fastest swap of this kind i have ever seen.
We had a blast up there yesterday even tho we couldnt stay the whole time.
