Default 2005 4 cylinder power?

Hello:

I've been looking at the 2005 tacomas since they came out last year. My dream would be an access cab TRD, 6 speed, but they're quite expensive compared to the 4 cylinder models, which still appear to be a hell of a truck.

My question is for those who have the 4 cylinder motor. Do they have plenty of power? It seems to me that a 4 cylinder wouldn't cut it for that size of a truck, but at the same time I know Toyota knows their stuff. If you had to do it again, would you get the V-6?

Thanks a lot for any answers you can provide me with.

-Steve

they added 16hp to the old 2.7 but dropped the gearing back to 4.10 (from 4.30/4.56). why they did that is a mystery but I imagine performance would be about the same as the '04s. I've only driven the 6sp and the AT v6s so can't really comment on the new 4. But, the gas mileage difference is negligible, IMO and I would buy a v6 over the 4 in a heartbeat. that new 4.0 is sure nice.

I have an 05 reg cab. the 4cyl seems plenty of power for me. I just sold a 97 pathfinder with a 3.3 v6 and the 4cly seems to have just as much power.

My only regret is not getting the Xcab. Though I cant figure out the price exactly. I paid 19,400 for a 05 regcab 4 cyl 5 speed with Ac and a rear sliding window. Im pretty sure the base Xcab with the same options is 21,000 I thought it was going to be allot more. I kinda regret it. but its not like I put anything back there except a speaker box and my Gym bag anyways.

i bought an '05 access cab, non trd, pre-runner, manual tranny and i love it. "having enough power" is subjective. some people's definition of "enough" isn't the same as others. personally, i'm glad i bought the 4 cyl. 5 spd. i've never driven the new V6, but i've heard its impressive. i suggest you go to a dealer that has a 4 cyl. manual trans. in the lot and take it for a test drive. decide for yourself......

i have a 2003 ext. cab with the 2.7L and i would definetely get another! It wont get up and run with the big boys on the interstate with balls to the walls but it is great for everythng else. I like the simplicity of the 4CYL and i hear there is a little noise on the new 6CYL .So far Toyota says its "normal" but i would just stay with the 2.7L . The 2.7L now has a plastic valve cover , a plastic intake manifold ,and a serpinetine belt instead of the individual belts like on my 2003 2.7L .

The plastic I dont care for, But its light. As far as the belt goes. Carry one extra instead of 3-4

I got an 05 2.7L 4x4 reg cab 5spd., love this truck!
I've been a V8 American steel guy since I started driving. This is my first Toyota; It's not the beast I'm use to, but it is a little monster. Got plenty of get up and go go!!! I'll buy another when it's trade in time

And then you woke up from your dream, a True Lightning would toast you! Either it wasnt a Lightning or you were racing and the other guy wasnt!

I had a '99 with the 2.7 but now have a '04 DC with the 3.4. I really liked my 2.7. Yeah, the V6 has more power but if your not gonna tow big stuff I wouldn't worry. I hear so many people talk about how durable the 2.7 is and I never had a problem from mine. Best thing to do is test drive the hell out of both and then decide what is best for YOU. Good luck.

A Lightning runs 0-60 in the high 5 Second range and a V6 Taco with a 6 Speed is in the high 7 to low 8 Second range and you were being easy on your truck because your Dad was with you?

I love Toyota's but I know my Fords, No damn way you beat a 13.9 sec @ 100mph in the 1/4 Mi. 0 to 60 in 5.8sec. truck, unless the dude driving was a retard or not racing

hey guys , what the heck is with the "i gotta have power thing" . The Lightning and Dodges RT/10 is all tempararey horsepower and i do mean what i say .That meaning is that in around 3-4 yrs if they still are around and have mileage on them the Toyota will still be here and the Dodge and Ford will be smoking from ring wear and/or just poor assembly or design . I love horsepower but i too realize that reliability is more important! And realiability will get you down the road when you nedd to go and that matters when you have a family like me . I love to go fast very quick but reliabiltity is the boss!

Well I did race a new dodge extra cab 4x4 w/the hemi with my 2k5 4x4 v6 and it was so close on the 1/8 mile that we couldnt decide a winner. This was at a drag track w/o the electronic timing devices, Sort-of out in the boonies.

I was not trying to go off topic, but that Dude is on drugs if he believes he SMOKED a Lightning and I was just pointing that out. I do know that all SVT Engines are hand assembled using high quality engine parts, and the suspensions are aftermarket Bilsteins, so I dont think they are designed poorly. Not going to outlast the Toyota, but a helluva truck, gotta give credit where credit is due.

I am very happy with my 02 2.7L reg. cab 4x4. I had been driving a 500+HP 03 Cobra Mustang daily for over a year and a half before buying the Tacoma, so it took a little getting used to. I had the opportunity to drive my Cobra on ice twice, and that's the reason for me picking up the truck. I barely made it home on a few occassions in snow and ice with the Cobra.
The only place my truck has difficulties is over 70mph on the intertates. I have 31" tires and 3.91 gears, so overdrive is rather steep. Any significant incline requires me to down shift to maintain speed. With 4.30s or 28" tires I think I'd be better off. My only plans for mods in the future are an electric fan setup like TRDOLMAN and a rear locker. Right now I'm getting 22mpg combined driving with just a K&N drop in and Mobil1 5W30 synthetic.

If I had the cash to throw around, sure I would like a new 5 speed automatic or 6 speed V6 model, but the toy truck appeal of a 4x4 regular cab 04 and back has had me itching for one for a while. Reminds me of the stompers I used to play with as a kid.

Default V6!!!

The 4.0 freakin' rules. Period. Not that I'm biased but I had an 02 Taco Prerunner with the 4 banger and it was GUTLESS. The 3.4 V6 on my 03 Taco was a big improvement but the new V6 moves that truck like a small block V8.

Im sure it does. but the 4cyl of today was the 6cyl of a few years ago I think. This 4cly has way more balls than my old 1995 sr5 pre tacoma 3.0 garbage. I think that was a 150hp 180 ft lb torque I hated that motor but loved that truck!

anyways I think this is a great motor for the money. YES the 4.0 is faster more powerfull. No one is saying its not.

Have you done any towing with your new truck? I have a 03 V6 and was wondering how it compares to your new one, i'm thinking the towing capacity is around 6500, not sure what the 03's have.

Thanks

Maybe you were Smokin something to actually beleive you beat a lightning!!!! If you wanted to make a point to say the new V6 has some balls, you should have just come out and said so! Making up such a silly BS story makes you sound so much less credible!

i haul a 1200 lb trailer loaded with about 2-3 tons of wood and rock lots of times and have had no trouble with my 2.7L 4 CYL. I love it . The only precautionary thing i have did in referencet to towing heavy is a tranny cooler. I seen a guy the other day have a good size Bass boat behind his and he was doing pretty good .
