Default Dell's M100 Trailer

Can already hear that sucking noise coming from my wallet ! ?

I don't think I'll get too expeditionary on this trailer.
But I do intend to use it off road and hauling on longer trips.

so... I'm going to be cleaning this M100 up some and thought I'd start a thread and share how that goes.

I got a bit of wire brushing and sanding, little weld work too, to get the tub sealed back up. Make or buy some sort of cover.

Not to mention secure the tub properly.

So to start off right, here's a good look at 'er now.

link to load's of detail pics below,

but first... some larger previews.

wutz 'dat wire fo ?

temporary pintle hitch...

:yeah I know that's not how the safety chains go.
But damn if it don't make for less slack bang on the pintle for street chit:

folding leg/stand...
( thing works great ! )

junk wire holding the tub on !?

all four corners
lights are cool tho'

looks fairly clean underneath.
and first thought the trailer's frame was in fair-good condition.
but was wrong 'bout 'dat

Edit* found cracks in the frame rails that required repair.
the issue is addressed later in this thread. (twice)

still sporting Data tags.

Interior tub condition...

and thar she sits lookin' at me.

This trailer came with a tech manual and parts list.
Not to mention, the original invoice and bill of sale from govt. surp.

I'm feeling purdy good about finding this gem... in the rough.

all the detail ! ~the good, the bad and the ugly~ Here

-----------------------------------

washed out the tub. and no real surprises
:tho' that's a lot of holes:

I have determined that my DOD and SN# are...

DOD 1 - 53, SN# 218

this posting of another '53 M100 at G503 website,
seems to substantiate the serial # 1 stamping irregularity.

Nice find, Dell! I've got a pre-M100 Bantam that I'm starting with--from Alaska. These are cool trailers. I like the parking brake that mine has.

On yours, is the pintle loop shaft bent?

Are you referring to the lunette ?

this pic better ?

seems straight that I can tell...
and a bonus is... no slop or play in the lunette's 360* rotation...
almost like it just came off the assembly line.
The fold down support leg shows no wear either.

The tub is the only thing that needs a little help.

the trailer's subframe and components are impeccable.
but I'm guessing I won't leave, well enough, alone. =

That's awesome, Dell! That thing is a diamond in the rough for sure!
I'll still give you the source and PN for the axle I'm using. It's heavy duty, electric brake ready, and the lug pattern matches the Tacoma. You should convert to spring-over and throw some TJ springs on there, too.

Default My first mod.

ok... not really

cleaned up the garage, so I could see if I can fit the dd, truck and trailer.

success was mine.

Oh... yeah I did a slight mod to the trailer, cause I gotta take that crap in it to the recycle center and make a dump run I guess.

so... I installed side and rear reflectors, as a stop gap.
Found these looking thru all my crap that I never throw away.

These were the oem reflectors which were replaced on my cbr 900rr damn near the 2nd day after I bought it.
:found some other shit too... that's heading for the ebay or craigslist thing:

You can see the side marker in these pics but not the rear.

I feel better now that my shit is out of visual sight.

Also took the time to beat flat, some of the shrapnel wounds, in prep for the flap disk and soon to come weld plugs.

Default cheap trick...

$ 8.

a temporary fix to allow for some watershed when I have a tarp in place.

it sits real tight in there, under the spring tension of the pvc bows, it's not glued together, so I can take it apart easy and change the hoops to equal length and/or taller if desired dependent on the height needing coverage and tarp size.

handy for the moment... by no means a permanent fixture.

Default thanks Jeremy...

they've installed jeep tailgates in these before.
or you could get a BT3-C http://www.tacomaterritory.com/forum...d.php?t=121824

I wanna keep mine in it's original amphibious state.

But a metal cover is what I'm thinking.

cheapo 6'X8' tarp.

^ had to temporarily tack the tub to the frame, to make a needed run to the landfill.

Yeah I feel very lucky to have found this...

was located in IE near Cherry Valley/Oak Glen. (recent burn area)
Damn nice thing for me... it was only about 25 miles from my house !!
The seller was obviously a very wealthy man by the looks of his estate.
He mentioned he was in the communications tower building business and it was good to him.
Was easy to see that.

In his craigslist listing he was asking $ 800. for the M100.
I had missed that listing for several days, because I had limited my search to "utility trailers". When I broadened that search to simply "trailers" and looked thru what seemed a million listings...
there it was.

I called and talked to him over the phone and he was saying someone had already offered him $ 500. and that he had turned that down.
'cause as he said, "I paid $ 600. for it in 2000... I'd like to get my money back outta it."
So I offered him $ 600.
and without any further wrangling.. He said Yes !

Took a drive up to look at it first person... and gave him $ 100. deposit and returned the very next day with the remainder.
Guess I didn't wanna chance he'd change his mind.

Cost me $ 34.00 for the DMV fees (title change)...
came with CA. lifetime trailer plates

the sweetener of the deal was when the previous owner called me back the very next week and told me he found a note in his files... that some spare parts to the trailer were still in the barn, and if I wanted them... I just need come get 'em.

so now I got the hand brake lever and the original electrical hook up that would plug into an M38-(A1) heep. Tho' I have no use for the later.

just so you all know...

I may be a little slow getting out the starting gate on this clean up.

But once I get all the holes patched up... things will go quicker.

Talking Home Depot solution...

'nother thing to get this heep bucket legal for the road.

I needed a simple way to secure the safety chains to the bumper.
WLL 3,300 lbs rating on these 1/2" quick links...
should hold this fly weight and keep most LEO's off my backside ~hope the 3/16" plate holds too !?~
10 minutes work at best.

also ordered a standard pintle and a riser mount...

('cause this type sucks balls !)

~but that's on back order 'til April~
so... guess I'm waiting for the slow boat from china

and picked up this welding spoon for welding/filling a few holes closed.
$7.99 at my local Harbor Freight.

It's a project... but I'm hoping to produce a Gem.

and that's 14K gold on this coach...

less gold

50/50...

good start...

And tho' normally Harbor Freight sells a lot of junk that falls apart.

this handy and durable cup brush worked well at the end of my drill, didn't self destruct, nor show more then about 1/3rd (bristle height) wear after stripping the whole tub interior.
definately worth the $ 4. spent on it. Happy I got an extra.

with things cleaned up a bit... it's easy to see,
some areas need a little help.

lil' outta focus...

One of two drain plug braces, needs a little attention as well.

'cause maybe one Gem just ain't enough...

How long is the the bed of this thing? I'm thinking of building an off-road trailer that will also carry my motorcycle, but I'm not sure if making it long enough to carry a bike would effect it being off-road worthy.

^ for $ 400. it was probably an old wood haul cart and is a rusted bomb.
You'll have to be lucky, to find one for under $ 800., in decent shape.

hell... a used tire/wheel alone, for a spare, cost me nearly $ 200.
finding a decent one... is no simple feat nor cheap.

but I needed one, so I gotta pay to play.

The third wheel...

not bad... little overspray on the sidewall...
but no sidewall checking

genuine M38 (A1) wheel...
and the lug mounting holes look good !

I'll probably change the axle and wheels later down the road.
But I want to be able to retain/maintain everything original to this M100.
so that when I am done with 'er... someone will be able to return her to her glory days...

is the lug pattern 5x5.5? is one side a left handed thread? the axle looks really similar to the one on my trailer.

I honestly haven't measure the lug pattern.
This axle is oem to this trailer, so, it's lug pattern is exactly the same as the Jeep M38's and M38A1's. so yeah it has to be 5.5

as far a "left handed thread" ?

are you referring to the axle hub nuts ?

would be pretty slick to run a taco lug pattern axle the trailer for wheel and tire interchangability but then you gotta buy 33's for it...
