It's actually easier to get an 85 4 runner than a 85 pickup. From my research the 4 runners were more likely to be adult driven and not used for hard work like pickups have been. Looking at 20 year old trucks now.. You have to be concerned about wiring harnesses and other facotrs besides the obvious rust, and mechanicla inspection. .. They get rarer by the day.
Personaly most every current owner knows what they have and will gouge the crap out of you... so if you must have an 85 do yourself a favor and bring the KY check the link.. http://autotrader.com/fyc/searchresu...first_record=1

I drove 400 miles and 2k later... I bought a 85 4Runner. Keep your eyes open and watch for deals of people that don't know what they have. Keep checking 4x4 boards especially Pirate4x4.

Exactly.. I am sorry it doesn't matter who makes it, the 85's are 20 year old equipment. If rust hasn't done a number on the frame the wiring , braking sytems and driveline are all in need of overhaul.

How Many old man owned since new garage kept 85's are left? Compared to those that have gone through many a highschooler and ameture fabricators hands??

hey it was my suggestion

i have an 84, rusted bed is about all that is wrong,

not much to go wrong with engine or wiring, brakes are easy and are wear items anyway

driveline gets replaced anyway in a trail rig

Sorry I didn't quote the right guy! You get full cr3dit .. let me make up for it

Better?? Yeah, an 84 didn't have a ECU and control harness to worry about. I worry about 20 year old ECU's. I also had a 68 bug in 88 and the wiring was getting UGLY. Stupid shit will go bad like the brake light swiches, and ahrd to find shorts will occur causing the smell of something burning to gihgts flickering and a kick toot he right body panel causing them to either stay on or go out.. You know.. a truck that some 16 year old mudded hard and never washed until he was 25 and wanted to sell. It.. You take the inside door panel off to fix a window and find that the door is half full of dirt and rust/formerly mud.
That shit happens in a 20 year old popular 4x4.

My 1st car when I turned 16 was a 1981 Toyota 4x4 truck with the 22R (Carb, not EFI). It already had like 110,000mi on it when I bought it in 1995, and I drove the shit out of it until I joined the Navy in 1998. I kept up all the maintenance on it while I had it - new starter, clutch, Carb rebuilt, oil changes, fuel filters, front seal (x2) - it ran great, and looked great. So when I was about to leave for the Navy my dad decided he wanted it for a GP truck (his truck being a 1998 Silverado Z-71 4x4). I sold it to my Dad for $1000, and he is probably driving it as I type this, with over 250,000mi on it and still running great. He told me on the phone yesterday that in the last 2 weeks, 5 people have offered to buy it from him, but he ain't selling!

...anyway - good luck finding a good one that someone wants to part with.

I had an 82 4x4 that I drove during my teenage years. That truck could withstand a serious beating! I honestly believe the early 80's models were the toughest trucks Toyota ever sold. Mine had 360,000 miles when I gave it away. The engine and drivetrain were still fair (used only dino oils), but by that time the body was getting a little rough.

I bought my 82 4x4 from the original owner about a year ago. Garage kept, all original, with 175,000 miles. Factory A/C, power steering, all the goodies other than moonroof. He had recepits of the work done going back to the late 80s. I have had more people ask about the truck than any other car I have driven. If you ask me, I got a good deal at $3000, but some say I overpaid. One like this is few and very far between if you ask me.

Bullshit - you didn't overpay at all. In that kind of condition I think most everybody around here would give 3 G's for it.
I WOULD! I wish I could find a deal like that.

my guess is it is a VERY late 84, it is extra cab with a/c and power steering and EFI, got lucky

paid 1200 for the 84 body mounts solid frame plated, paid $500 for 85 with 38 swampers brand new, frame cracked pieced out and junked rest

save that rear axle for your truck you want the wider axle and the ifs box

Didn't '85s come available with a 6 banger efi, last of the solid axles? I could be wrong... But I thought it did... But my memory is fading...

Just keep your eyes open and be patient! I found my 85 runner in pretty good shape for $1850 after a year or 2 of searching. Good luck! They are out there.

Ooooor, you could look at the Wild Yoats forum, and find a truck to buy in 20 minutes.
