Default Giving it a go at a swingout tire carrier

Just picked up a DIY swing away tire carrier kit from AtoZ Fab.-->(http://www.atozfabrication.com/store...lders-Kit.html)

Here are a few pics of the action.

Making the the spindle side mount

2x3 .120

Used this guy to heat up the spindle housing. Also had to put the inside sleeve for the bearings into the freezer so they would shrink. Other wise you need a press to do so.

with the inner sleeve pressed in with the bearing

Well after some thought I tossed the latch side mount in the trash and started over. I got rid of the plate and went back to 2x3 .120 square stock. I know that the plate was just not going to work. It was just asking to be bent to hell.

Maybe its time for a new set of welding gloves..

Impressive - - a few questions... of course.
You planning to mount your license plate else where?
With your rear tire going to be cantilevered at an angle (in relationship to the hinge) the forces at the hinge will be extreme.
Did you thought of going with a thicker walled rectangular tube as your main tube from the hinge?
You may see some premature bending of the tube that you did not expect.

Thank you! Honestly I have not thought about it that much just yet. It will prob be mounted on the tire.

I hoping that with all the tie in on the stock bumper that the 2x3 .120 will not bend. But I guess time will only tell..

That looks awesome!! We got something in the motor pool the other week and I meant to post the pics up just for people to see but maybe this will help you out some. The tire carrier in the picture mounts a 37" tire and Hummer rim and we have used them pretty extensively off road and they stand up to the infantry drivers too.

What you've made looks pretty close imo. Hope this helps.

Just out of curiosity where did you find the spindle and bearing pieces? I finally found a shop where I can get decent prices on metal but specialty parts like that I didn't see in the metal shop. I'm not too far from you so if you found them local I would be very interested. I use K&H Metal for when I need something over in Riverside.

Very nice, looks like it'll be plenty strong. I was curious where you got the tire mount part, where the wheel bolts too. I've built two different carriers recently and that piece is hard to get right/aligned/look good. Very nice build!

I Purchased this kit from AtoZ Fabrication.. They do sell the spindle portion separately.

Default Stage 2

Today i started the second stage of my tire carrier. I added a spring loaded stop for the gate and buit rack for two 5Gals or an Ice chest.

Happy Cinco de Drinko!

New beadlocks and rubber

Now time for the 5Gal rack.

Today was kind of a pay off day for me. I have been working on a few different projects on the rig and was able to get everything finalized and wrapped up.

The completion list is as follows:
-Gas&water carrier
-Stop/locking latch for the carrier
-Co2 Mount painted
-New tool box mounted
-HighLift Mount
-Wire/install the Lic plate light.
-Mount new beadlocks and rubber.

The Gas and Water jerry can mount is not the most ascetically appealing but its strong as hell and should do the trick.

some pics of the action.

Lic plate light done.

The redesigned bed area with the new Co2 mount, HighLift mount, and tool box.

Stoping and locking latch for the swing out tire and jerry can carrier.

All done.

I see one thing. Add a small chain with a clip to hold your locking T bolt in. Looks like you can mount it on your can mount. This will keep the bolt from getting lost.

Ill take a look at that. The T-Bolt fits pretty snug. I did not think it would be a problem, but it might be a good idea

I like it.

As per the lift rings in the hummer pics, do you know what those things cost? They are not cheap.http://www.carrlane.com/Catalog/inde...1E173C1B085351
