Well I think i'm going to be selling my tacoma to my brother and will be turning my 85 4runner into my daily driver. Wanted to get some help of things to do to the engine/whole truck to ensure it will be a good DD without doing a complete engine rebuild.
Its an 85 with the 22re has 217k, 5spd with new clutch, recent brake job and unsure of anything else that has been done. Would I be better off getting a completly new performance engine or trying to stick with the one I have since I would like to get the engine set first before I do any susp upgrades to this one Any links to engine shops or performance vendors is greatly appreciated

I know the 22re's can last for a long time. Do a compression test and see what you come up with. If it reads some high numbers, just ride it (sorry, I dont know the specific pressures).

got average of 140-150 for all four cylnders, but #3 and #4 were leaking...Im thinking its exhaust valves, and since I will be doind the timing chain and head gasket as preventive maintanance, those leaks should be gone when I get the head rebuilt..........

Hey Brandon I just put a almost new motor in mine its the best thing ive done since i got this thing. The only thing used on it is the block every thing else is new. Ive got tons more power than I did with the old motor now everything else is going bad. I guess thats what 20yrs will do to them. I hope you have enjoied our Taco. Send me some pics of her sometime.

Check out www.22re.com. It is a link to john's foriegn engines. they have almost any thing you could need whether you decide on a new motor or a rebuild. While i have not actually bought any thing from them I did call them about one of their performance longblocks and they were very helpful and knowledgable about their product. I have also had good luck with lc engineering out of arizona. I bought my drilled and slotted brake rotors for my tacoma from them and they were also very easy to deal with. Hope this helps

If you've got a half-way decent engine, I would say just stick with it and pep up the small itmes. Check your chain... they came with a plastic guide, so that would be about the only internal thing I would replace right off the bat. Past that, maybe some healthy intake and exhaust, clean injectors, and a new gasket or two and run it! Got two 85's that are daily drivers and not really any issues out of the ordinary.
Good luck! |

A valve adjustment will work miracles on a high milage 22RE moast people forget all about that when they do the 60k tune-up

I'll see if I can pull up all the links of our old runs, shes been a freaking dream, done way more than most local trucks could ever think of doing. My brother will hopefully treat it the same way I did, and it still will stay with someone who will wheel the piss outa it

I got mine from here http://www.powerpro2000.com/ It was 1685 but well worth it. I could have rebuilt it my self and would have put the same money into it. but this way I got it done in 3 days. I still got 5 years to get smogged so i should be good till then.
