Square tube driveshaft

What is the advantage of using a square dirveshaft? It's more money, more fab time and doesn't handle impact as well. I am just curious.

I am currently running a square shaft. It does vibrate above 25-30 mph. Most people who use square shafts don't plan on using them on the road so their speeds are ussually less than 10mph so it is fine. As far as advantages they are much cheaper mine cost $80 in materials apposed to $250 for a new shaft. As far as strength goes they are about twice as strong as a round shaft. The thickness of each square is ussually 3/16"-1/4" and most of the time they are overlapping eachother doubling the thickness. The other advantage is that if something does happen to it fixing it is simple.

I am basically looking for the cheapest way to go, but this will be strong.

I was told,
that the splines on the stock toyota driveshaft are not long enough for the longtravel setup that I have. It's not that extreme or anything, just 5 inch allpoo springs but that was what I was told. So lengthening the existing one will not work. I am going to do it even if it would work. Sqaure tube seems the way to go, being that I am not going to the baja 1000 and running at 70+mph.

im runnin one on my FJ55... it works ok.. vibrates about 20 MPH+...... really i hate it.. since i crushed my rear shaft and had to drive home (90 miles) it damn near shook ALL the rust off..

it works, but that one event spoiled it for me.. but it was damn near free

FJ-55, huh....I sometimes miss my old iron pig. Which two tone color scheme do you have?

Like others have said, square is an inexpensive way to get long slip yoke travel at the expense of [often very serious] vibration.

AllPro sells a drive shaft kit that cheaper than a new shaft but not as cheap as square.
