Default Saw 3rd Gen. 4Runner Truck Conversion *PICS!*

I was driving to school this morning and saw what I thought was a D-cab Tacoma but something looked strange about the rear window. When I pulled up closer to it I found that it was actually a '96-'02 4Runner that was converted into a truck. Here are a few pics I snapped. Sorry about the quality, they were taken with my phone:

I'm not in the 4Runner scene much but wanted to know if this is something that has been done before? I've seen the other 1st and 2nd Gen. but not a 3rd gen.

Not the best looking rig in my honest opinion, but it's clean and well executed.

I think that's a Hilux double cab - I mean why would you go to all that effort to do such a well-detailed, complete conversion, then put stock wheels and a cheesy bumper on it?

I think you may be right. I found a few pics on some Autrialian Hilux boards:

I think this one might be an older model. It's not as rounded but I can't tell for sure.

Im not convinced its a Hilux. Toyota does better jobs of making body lines and such match. The reason I say this is the doors has the plastic on the bottom of them and nothing on the bottom of the bed, Also the indention in the doors and bed side dont match. To me it does look like a 4runner front half and a Tacoma bed. Also it just looks Half assed to me.

It is NOT a Hilux. Toyota never made a Hilux with a 4runner cab like that. With that said, that thing is "unique" and IMO a unique waste of some serious $$$. He must have made it before D-Cabs existed. Which ever body shop did the work did a good job but like someone else said the lines don't quite match up right, especially the bed and rear doors. Cool find though!

I like it. Should have done a shorter bed. Similar to Bob Williams rig.

It looks funny under the rear window and above the bed. Kinda like it's unfinished or something.

The truck was actually done quite well with the exception of some sloppy work under the rear window. You can't really see it well in the pics but the bondo work at the bottom of the rear window looks an 8 year old did it.

Looking at it more, it's a 4Runner for sure:

deffinately a ton of work... I considered doing something similar last year before i found my D-cab donor. But it's a ton of Fab work, that looks pretty good except for the lines from the door to the bed.

With the wheel well moved so far forward, the bed looks too long. Sorta goofy..., But props to whoever built it. Very unique

hmmm that's really strange...... Its definitely different and unique. As far as the conversion goes, there are a few things I woulda done differently, but overall, it looks pretty clean. I will say this, the bed alone looks like a factory type job. The spot under the rear window does look a bit off. The 2 things that are really annoying me is the body cladding all together looks like pooh, but if you're gonna do it, do the rear too. Secondly, the rear fender flares, right behind the doors, the big "chunk", for lack of a better term seems kinda half-assed. It doesn't look like its real stable, looks like it could just "chunk" off at any minute. But, again, overall, cool idea and platform!

I think it probably started out in life as a 4 runner but then got ass ended. They then chopped the rear off, put a bed on it andwelded the tail gate from another 4 runner on it. Just the rear window looks like it doesn't roll down anymore.

It's not a Hilux it's defiantely a conversion, but the question is WHY... The body lines are all wrong to be a Hilux, but the worst part is the rear overhang...

It's cool cause it's a Toyota, but it's really ugly in every other respect, and it DOES look like the Scooby Baja!!!!!

It doesn't take that much $$ if you own a body shop or what not. My cousin owns one of the largest body shops in northen cali, even i showed him the pick and he said it would probably take a week to pull that off, all you need is a rear ended 4runner, with a tacoma bed, both of course both are gonna have a salvage title, but with all that said and done, he said it would probably run around 3 - 4k for everything...not too bad if u ask me.

Is the rear overhang that much more than a normal Tacoma. I say that because it looks to me like they took a regular size bed and cut it down, mainly because the bone line in the bed seems to end at an odd spot, as if it were cut off.
