Question 285 75 16...NO lift ????

Anyone running 285/75 16s on a stock setup?

I've searched and couldn't really find any info saying exactly yes or no. I probably didn't find anything because it can't be done. But I would just like your thoughts on this.

I don't do any kind of off roading. I just like the "stuffed" look you get from putting big tires on non-lifted trucks. I know, I know....I'm not a true truck guy if I don't wanna take it off road. I just bought it (2004 Tacoma V6 5spd) and don't wanna mess anything up with a lift or void the extended warranty the damn sales person talked me into ( big mistake I guess) anyway ....Just tell me if I can put these tires on a stock Tacoma. I'm willing to do trimming and I'll hammer the pinch weld. Thanks

anything will fit with trimming, but your probably going to have to trim a good amount.....

Yeah you could do it with a LOT of trimming. And just so you know, bigger tires will void your warranty as well.

they'll fit.. they'll rub like a mother unless you cut some stuff... and no, bigger tires won't instantly void your warrenty, but it'll make a lot of drivetrain warrenty repairs a PITA, cause you'll have to fight to get them to do it.

well that's the same case with suspension lifts...
if the dealer finds out the bigger tires caused the drivetrain to fail...than it's voided..

The only way that i've seen 285'sfit was by using wheel spacers but they still rub a lil in reverse.

unless you want to trim and bash the hell outta things, you'll need 4" of lift. 2" suspension 2" body lift works well, or 3" suspension 1" body. whatever to = 4. I wheel goodyear mtrs 285/75/16s on black steelies, and roll 285/75/16 street tires on the stock alloys. At full compression my tires barely clear with 4" of lift.

Does anyone forsee big problems when putting bigger tires on as far as drivetrain problems??

I don't plan to rear gear or anything, that goes back to my warranty issue.

And yes, this is a street queen, mall ride.....no dubs or anything just some nice big A/T tires would be nice.

Thanks again everyone. This forum is the best!!

i was told by a couple of reputable vendors (which are listed on this forum alot), that a 3" lift up front should be ok for 285/75/16's. i of course dont know if they said "ok" just so i would buy the parts, but i'm at least gonna try it, if i absolutely need 1" body spacers i will do that.

i went with walker evans coilovers and alcan leaf pack, along with bushwacker flares (which gives some more room).

My advice is not to do it. First, You're gonna rub. Even street driving involves some compression. With no lift you are either going to hit your upper control arms and will hit your frame when cranking the wheel. Also you'll hit the pinch weld area. Second, you'll want to re-gear. You'll notice a decent power loss going from your stock 31's to 33's. Finally, if you care, your mileage will drop 2-3 mpg. If you are really set on a taller tire (33" size)with no lift look at either 285/55/16's or with a different set of rims get 33x10.5's. There are a few on here that run some of those set-ups without any lift, but even then there is a decent amount of trimming to do.

I ran 285's with 3" of lift with a more off-set wheel and still hit the frame at full lock and hit the rear fender flares when flexing in the back (even going up driveways on a turn would cause it to hit).

Stick with 265/75/16's. It's a little bigger (32") and you'll have minimal rubbing and the mpg and power loss is less noticeable.

I think you mean 255/85/16.

Even 265/75/16's will rub the frame on full lock turns on many trucks with no lift. You have to ask yourself what's more import...pride or practicality. Power loss, mpg loss, more tire = more $$, added strain on the drivetrain, and the potential to damage your fenders, just to feel good about how your tire fills out the wheelwell. It's an easy decision in my book.

Not to mention, you could have answered this question by doing a SEARCH first!

Thanks for the info......

Well, I dont really care all that much about the height issue (33"). I just really want wider tires. I found a 285/ 70 16 . Now this would give me the width without increasing all that much in height, right?

I own A 04 Taco with 285/75R16 all I did to fit them is 2" pucks up front to level it out.
Ido rub on the frame at full lock cause i'm still on the stock wheels. Oh yeah I do have the trd package to. hope this helps a little. And the rubber i'm running is bridgestone dueler at revo

Not to say that these rigs ya see on TTORA aren't nice. They're awesome, just not what I'm going for.

Did you have to do the "pinch weld" mod to get the front tires to move freely??
