Arrow Rock Lights and protection...

Well I finally have all the rock lights up and running...

Here's the locations I mounted them in and the direction they point...

Order... front bumper, below drivers feet (body mount support), rear cab (body mount support) and aft bed...

Understand I was trying to be as cheap as possible and trying not to drill anymore holes in the truck then needed...

I bought 8 of the Wally World Dirt Burner Fog lights cause they're expendable... Lucky for me cause the brackets that came with them lined up perfectly with pre-existing holes on the body mount supports... No drilling for the four lights between the wheel wells... Except I drilled for the grounds... The front one bolts to an existing filler panel I made for the AP bumper... and the rears are mounted to the panels that reinforce the tail light housings/bed corners... One hole is there and I had to drill one extra for each rear light bracket...

I ran 8Ga. wire from the 34R with an 80 amp inline fuse inline to the Buss Fuseblock (rated @ 100 amps) and relays... Which are all mounted on one board and siliconed to the floor in the cubby hole... I set this up to switch for right and left sides on two switches... From the fuse box the passenger side exits the hole exiting the rear of the cab on that side... the drivers side exits there... I ran 14Ga. wire from the fuse block to the lights... Covering the whole shabang with the black plastic flex hose... It looks factory and is zippy tied up neatly on the frame rails and with easy access to where each light plugs into the hot... I set up the relays so that the pair of lights covering both front and aft of each wheel is on one relay for each corner... Though it doesn't really matter as the right and left bank are wired into seperate switches (4 lights per side/switch)... It's only my preference so that if a relay were to go out... I would only lose one corner of the truck...

Well... I found that after everything was wired and ready to go... I noticed that a rock had cracked the lens of the drivers side light mounted to the rear of the cab... I realized that I needed to somehow protect that one and the one at the rear of the bed as stuff gets kicked up purdy good when the mud flaps are removed... so on to my next issue...

I needed to make some guards... Went shopping to Home Depot... Picked up two Galv. framed screen mesh 8" X 16" for a furnace or some shit ? (see pic)... And a 4ft. section of rain gutter debris mesh... (This stuff is the thickest I could find... Seems to be stiff enough for the task... But keep in mind... I was trying to not impede any of the light... so it had to be as open as possible...

I boxed in the pair at the rear of the cab (both sides) using the body mount supports as mounting points... The forward edge uses two sheet metal screws... and the rear was a tight fit so I used some stainless tie wire... It's a tight fit on the rear support as it's right next to the frames body support... It worked out fine but I had to cut holes for the nuts that protrude from the light brackets so the mesh could lay flat to the surface... Yeah if you had a mind to try and utilize the light bracket bolts to hold the mess... then have at it... I was feeling a bit lazy here... Plus I tied it thru an existing hole... making the only holes drilled... were the two on the forward support... All tightend down... and they seem fairly stout... Time to move out back...

Now these were much easier to deal with... Just a little bending to shape and ta da... I used a pair of dykes to put the bend in the Galv. framing... It bends easily... The forward lower edge is supported using an already existing hole (square) and a clip for the bolt to thread in... (Parts left over from removing my front tupperware off)... Two sheet metal screw hold the aft end... the forward upper end has no support at this time... Maybe an L bracket down the road if need be... I rolled the edge in so as to keep the whole thing from being a rock catcher... It is rolled in past the point of the rear inner plastic fender... With the mudflaps removed... there is no chance of the tires throwing rocks up into the basket... Now mud could be a problem with this set up but I don't know that yet... But I hate mud and avoid it like the plague... If I can go around... I will ...

Well that's about it... Sorry I didn't include every detail... But it's all really just a common sense approach... And utilizing what is already there... I'm sure there will be the critics... But hey... do something else if this doesn't appeal to you...

Oh and what good would this thread be if you can't see the lights working... LOL

Keep in mind... It was still daylight out and was parked in the garage... When it's really dark out... They illuninate much better... I'll try and get some shots of it in the dark... and add them to this later...

Hope this gives others some ideas...

EDITED for some more pics... Shoulda pulled the flaps for a better effect... as they're shadowing the tires...

You should make them all different colors, with relays to make them flash...that way you could throw some sick light shows after a long day of wheeling.

I made a mesh grill for the scoop on my glassworks hood and my buddy talked me into letting him put a blue led behind it (he wanted to put them EVERYWHERE, so I figured letting him put one on would make him happy and save my truck from being completely riced out)...waaaaay sick, I'll try to post some pics.

This thing has a mesh grille in it... I just don't think I got the courage to mount that thing on my rig...
LOL

Maybe if it were silver... hmmm...

I don't know what ever possessed me to buy it in the first place...

Yeah seriously...makes about as much sense as your avatar...

I figured since mine is a REAL scoop I should probably put a grill in there to keep a good sized rock, or bird, or whatever else from flying into my engine.

I like the S/C hood/scoop. I'd like to get a pair of functional louvers. I've seen some on E-Bay that came off of a 60's model Baracuda or something like that and they were badass. Wouldn't be extremely noticeable on my truck. It's black too.

nice writeup. Rock lights are one of my soon projects. I like the idea of the flashing lights, i think i'll have to setup an auxillary setup just for those for those crazy camping nights

Nice Work Dell.. now you can light up my street when we have a power outage..

just curious.. but how well do you think yer mesh will hold up to landing on a rock.. or is that just for the little stuff that yer tires will kick up..

Thanks Erik... Those things are so far up under the body and protected by the sliders that getting crushed by a big rock would be nearly impossible... And my BFG AT's can only throw a certain size rock... That's what I'm trying to protect it from... the ones that get caught in the tread... those little 1/4' to 1/2" dirty bastards... The mesh will hold up to that... Maybe even larger stuff... But I won't know... 'til I know... The cab mounted "Rain Gutter Mesh" stuff is nearly 1/16" thick... It should keep it's shape... But even if it don't... It won't make any difference as long as it keeps deflecting those pesky little rocks... I'm not worried of how purdy they look... There up and under and out of sight anyhow... The lowest point of the basket is 4" above the lower frame rail... That's gotta be one narrow pointy rock to protrude up into that... I think I'd have worse problems if that were to happen...

Oh and if and when they do go to shit... The total cost of replacement ? Uh... $ 11.50... for all four locations... Shouldn't kill the bank...

I used the same lights as you, mounted in pretty much the same locations. The only bad thing about the lights, is how long they last. I don't run mine much, but out of 8 lights on my truck, only four of them still work, and I have used my rock lights maybe 4 times.

So what's the problem ? Wiring ? The bulbs burning out ? I'm thinking of using 35 watt bulbs as I've noticed they produce a lot of heat... Time will tell... And lastly... what more could you expect from Wally World ? Piaa quality ? LOL... I personally like the exchange rate... I buy a new set and return the old ones that go kaput... But so far no issues... And it's fun driving up and down the street with them on... gets tons of odd looks... LOL

Though with as many vehicle code book laws as there are in Cali... I'm sure I'm breaking some retarded law...

I'm assuming the bulbs are just burning out, cause I plug a new one into the same wiring and it works just fine. I don't expect them to last forever, but it would be nice if they lasted more than 4 hours.

Yeah i think 55 watt is too much for these small lights... And they get extremely hot... so that may be of consideration... And may be prematurely wearing out the bulbs due to the high heat and lack of heat dissapation... Or the bulbs are just shit quality... I know that PIAA offers a 35 watt h-3 bulb that draws 35 but puts out @ a supposed 65 watts or some crap... But PIAA's are too costly for my blood... so I'm trying to find an optional h-3/35 watt bulb... But in regards to yer complaint... I'd suggest that you find a higher quality bulb... Or recheck yer wiring for any shorts or lack of proper (good quality) grounds...

Those look awesome...
Have you thought about LED's in place of those 55 watters? I know the price becomes a factor...but either way, the one's you got look like they'll do the trick x10...I was just thinking along the lines of reliability. How much were the Wally World ones each?

If I did more night wheeling, I'd put some on...Fuck, now I want some.

LED's are not bright enough unless you use multi's that have a bazillion LED's... and that will get very costly...

WW Dirt Burners... $14.00/Pair and some change... I haven't have issues with the bulbs... Even after this... ... http://www.tacomaterritory.com/forum...ad.php?t=45744 and besides these bulbs are fairly cheap to replace...

I've located some 35 watt H-3 replacement bulbs and will be trying them out... They may offer longer life... less drain... less heat... and put out nearly the same light as the 55's... http://www.autolumination.com/ sells them... ($9.00 each though ) Check them out... they have tons of LED options if you choose to go that route...

There are plenty of better light options out there... But this was done with a budget in mind... and cheap replacement... Harbor Freight sells a pair for about the same price... similar in size/watts (H-3)...

I like my cheapo set up... Plenty of bang for the low buck...

Nice setup with those rock lights. I was going to say why not go simpler with a premade LED setup but from the pictures you posted your setup is 2-3 times brighter than any LED setup I have ever seen.

Thank you...

I played around with some multi LED's before I did this and wasn't satisfied with the light output... Those pics are in my driveway... On the trail.. they seem even brighter... I think Wally World discontinued the Dirt Burner lights... But Harbor Freight has some fogs that look to be about the same size and maybe a little wider pattern... And they're probably cheaper then the Wally's... so those will be the replacements if I need to do so... Only problem with those little 55 watt lights is that they tend to run on the hot side... So far they are holding up though...

You should see the LightForce units in action...

Oh bring it over and I'll show you how to wire them... I might even help... If'n I'm in a good mood...

Get those Harbor Freight ones... and watch for the sale on them... I know they were on sale at one point for like $ 9.00 a set... And that was a steal...

Oh and search you lazy white mexican... ha... The wiring diagrams are all over this forum... Hell you don't do anything at work anyways but fark around posting shiat here... You got the time to search...

Soon as I get my front diff breather re-attached
(It would seem my gear installer did a poor job of reattaching it ... Still waiting to see if Holcomb Creek was deep enough to get sucked in )...
He'll be correcting that Monday or Tuesday... (and that is going to be a biatch... without dropping the diff again... Cause I made a feeble attempt and said to hell with it... He farked it up... he gets to correct it )...
I'll be ready for another run by then ...
